Backers per day

Since the new year, the number of new backers for ED per day is averaging between 20-30.

With the excellent alpha exposure, is anyone surprised that this number isn't higher.:S

As a comparison, SC's daily average of new backers is about 850  and they have no alpha to show off, etc.

You may not think this important, but the way I see it is more backers equals better populated multi-player and more guaranteed expansions in the years to come.

There was a massive increase in backers following the release of the Alpha but the buzz has kind of died down a bit now. I suspect when the next phase of Alpha is released and and the videos hit youtube there will be another rush. I agree that backer numbers are extremely important for the future of the game.

I think the SC funding strategy has been especially devious. Putting the ships up for 'sale' in dollars works very well and the whole hanger module has a sort of grown up Pokémon appeal. The hanger module seems to give new backers a value proposition too: I pay my money I get my ship...pay more money...get a bigger ship...pay more money...get a fish tank.

I hope eventually they start to focus on making a decent game to go with all that pretty stuff!

The backer numbers at SC are ridiculous really if thats true - id almost say they were made up!

Suppose it shows the power of effective marketing, I back both and I hope both are good but I just wish more folk knew about how good ED is going to be with the benefit that it comes out over a year earlier than anything SC is going to put out in terms of a full game.

Hopefully the game (ED) will speak for itself on release and get great media attention of the sort that the SC lot seem to be very good at doing for themselves.

If everybody buys E:D today there won't be anybody to buy it tomorrow.

Except me. I accidentally bought the alpha twice, but that is because I am a moron.

Nice Oss :D

If everybody bought it twice then the game would be in great shape!

Though it still wouldnt have gained 10% of the apparent funding of SC <insert emote for a suspicious chin rub here>

.

they have multiple trailers to show off
they have avatar gameplay to show off
they have a dozen of high poly ships to show off
they have high quality mindblowingly awesome ship ads to show off
they have Chris Roberts to show off
they have a weekly progress show to show off
they have 24 hour livestreams to show off
they have a subscriber magazine to show off
they have three types of customizable hangars with ships to show off
they have fans who do mods and put videos on youtube to show off
they have hoodies, t-shirts and pledge packages to show off
they have stretch goals to show off
they have complete ship specs and an interactive website to show off
they have an ingame buggy, burning rings of fire and a customizable fishtank to show off

BUT
they DON'T have a single player tech demo space alpha to show off, correct

here as I said im a backer there (to the tune of about £250) and frankly most of that list to me as a backer means nothing to me in terms of the thread title and how they are getting so much support.

Having said that...Maybe thats the point though, im already a backer I have put my money down and dug a little deeper as times gone on and found that the place is being built on a very pretty house of cards.

I own a freelancer, but worry about the progression proposition. What fun is there in working for credits to buy a better ship when you can just go to your hanger and take it out of storage.

As tempted as I am to buy an Admiral package and get all ships its hard to see what I would actually do in the game after that, I could just go bounty hunting, but to what end?

So I'm sticking with a basic craft only.

Given that development is funded, retail purchases are at least as good as pledges. It's retail purchases that will presumably fund expansions ... large numbers coming in early and buying an expansion pass (i.s.o buying expansions later) will actually deprive FD of revenue in the longer term.

@ Fromhell

Not sure how to take your post, but I would expect a playable demo to have greater impact than many of the items in your SC list.

It's not a playable demo though ... yes, watching the alpha gameplay videos is damn impressive and exciting, but it's not the same as an actual playable demo.

hey dude, the game isn't called ELITE for nothing :D

it will have nowhere near enough mass appeal to sell anything like the units/value that sc can/has generated. it is hollywood blockbuster vs indie cinema flik.

ed will have its chance, but i am also aware that it might be not be as comercially successful as some much much weaker games.

time will tell and just enjoy the ride ;)
