Ok, I'm a bit lost

Just as the title says I am a bit stumped where I should start with the new Powerplay features.

I dip in and out of Elite Dangerous from time to time and I was last playing in 1.2 so I'm more than a bit lost.

I have two ships at my disposal: A well Armed Vulture that I was farming extraction zones with and a Type 6 that is fitted for exploration.

Any idea where I should start?

Trade rares at Diso to 39 Tauri. Then upgrade to Asp for a trader/defender and smuggle a few slave missions around Diso (found now at AC Yanto).
Keep the Vulture and take it to Conflict Zones. All the same difficulty except for respawn rates. They get tougher the more you go back and get higher rated. Oh Power Play - not yet for me!

PowerPlay is actually very simple. The problem is that it is obscured by utterly rubbish FD guides and an interface that is bewildering and poorly designed.

I advise joining a power in which someone is willing to walk you through it in game. There are plenty of cmdrs out there from the different powers willing to help. If you were a Winters supporter I'd do it myself.

The above link will take you to the most significant powers communities.

I suppose I want to amass lots of credits to buy and outfit better ships and I'm ok doing that by trading or bounty hunting. I do exploration when I have a new series on Netflix to watch.

Gotcha. Then to answer your original question, it's really all down to cargo space, so you're probably looking at Type 7->Clipper->Python, with an emphasis on cargo racks, so probably as few shields, power, weapons as you're comfortable with. As credits are your goal, you may wish to ignore Powerplay.
