"Is Elite worth a try?"

Ah, I got ya. :D

:) If he started playing now and didn't stop, he'd still be playing on the 3rd July.

I went to the cinema last night. Don't go often and remembered why. £10 a ticket for an hour and a half of entertainment. I paid £40 for Elite and have had 150-200 hours. Any wonder why people pirate films?!

Jesus am I the only person here with decent command of the English language?

He says:

He has played for around 300 hrs. After a few days of play he recommended it to his friends and then immediately took it back (the recommendation not the game) - ie he regretted recommending it.

You dopes. So quick to argue about people who have anything bad to say about a game you like you cant even read a sentence properly before making your mind up to write a negative answer.

I am in agreement with him by the way - this game is not for everyone and whereas it will grow into something great its not anywhere near there yet. and its certainly not something you can invest all your time in. Believe me I have played games like that (Football Manager, Falcon 4, Frontier, EF2000 etc) and this aint one of those yet. Nowhere near in fact.

To be honest this game is marmite, you'll ever love it or hate it. As with all games you have to try them to find out.
I wouldn't go by whats said on the forums much, again its marmite.
Personally I love it, and six months on I still am.

Marmite.... [shudders]...

I think of it more as Nutella! Yum! :) (And have just proved your point in the process).

IMO Eltie is the best game of its genre I've ever played, bar none.... BTW I remember Falcon 4 well LOL --You'd take 45 minutes to plan a mission, another half hour flying to your target for 3 minutes of action over the target....very realistic game, but geeze, what a pain in the a**

Well you obviously havent played Frontier or First Encounters then because both of those were better than ED as it stands at the moment. Both were far more absorbing and immersive. I am sure ED will get to a higher level eventually but its going to take a long long time. At the moment there is precious little to do in the game that is interesting - in fact chasing and killing criminals is pretty much it. The exploration is really dull without being able to land anywhere, trade is a matter of guesswork and long graft, mining is too labourious and repetitive, and there isnt really anything else to try - smuggling, piracy, bounty hunting, assassination - none of these aspects work well enough yet. Plus the stations are mostly the same, and as for the ships you cant even look at them from the outside properly and there arent enough in the game to provide any choice of purchase path.

Lots and lots still to be done before I can play this game properly, another year of work yet at the very least I would say.

And as for F4 that game was amazing - the open world carrying on around you gave you some great surprises and all of what you mention is normal gameplay in any flight sim. Obviously not for you but I played F4 for more than a few years. Cant say that about any other game - even Frontier and FFE only lasted me for a year or so.

This, but the fanboys will hang you.

Nothing in this game "feels" finished, and it's getting worse (PP) and worse (standing decay) and worse (not properly working wing mechanics) with each update.

YES BUY IT ITS VALUE FOR 60$ People who bash the game played it for hundreds of hours, they are stupid.

Wake up,look at the video games industry today, youre paying triple AAA title money for cashgrabs or for vaporware like star citizen. Elite dangerous is by todays standards a complete game, with several expansions. I admit there are alot of bugs, but so far FD has fixed issues and didnt just ignore them and moved on.

I'd recommend to anyone I know not to buy it at the moment. Trouble is, most people I know that would be interested already got it and most left. :/

I've played pretty much every space flight sim made (and mods), including the little known ones like X-com interceptor (not that bad). I really think you're suffering from a nostalgic selective memory, grab a playable copy of any of them and do a direct comparison. ED is the best.

Frontier (stable on windows) is really easy to find as freeware, honestly crank it up and get your focus back (its fantastic for a twenty year old game).

Hm... for a few months I would have recommended it. And i did.

Not right now though.

I don't understand people who don't like the game at all, claim it sucks, but hang out here...

I mean if I don't like say... Car War! (I just made that up, but it might exist on Steam Greenlight) I might drop in a review saying 'Hey, I played Car War! it wasn't for me. Here's why!' But I wouldn't hang around Liqua Productions's official website continually complaining about how Car War! sucked.

In fact the above has happened a few times. I have a few games in my Steam Library (some Game of Thrones Game (Genesis?) springs to mind) like that. I haven't even reviewed most of them.

Let me elaborate...

A few months ago, at about openbeta, Elite appeared to be the solution to my very specific itch. See, I wanted a multiplayer game where I'd be part of or run a handful of maniacs in space. Mining, looting, whatever we'd please much like in EVE, but hands-on, admiring the views and walking the ship decks. Hard to explain really, but comes down to being a band of deep space renegades, abiding by law or acting against it in as much a measure as they'd see fit. Bit of shameless piracy, bit of management.

About release-time, ED seemed likely to deliver such a combination of features one day, but as time passes - the likelihood appears to be decreasing. As does my patience.

ED has been very clear that it isn't 1st Person EVE, since Day 1. I'm sorry the game isn't what /you/ want it to be. It is what it is.
