Econ vs fast route

I'm a beginner at exploring, and after reaching 1000 LY in ~ 33 jumps, and making it to the North America Nebula in only two nights of play (stopping to detail scan undiscovered non-ice worlds), I made a choice that my next leg of the journey will be done in economy mode.

1000 LY now plots with 161 jumps, I managed only approx 40 jumps last night, again I stop to scan non-ice worlds that haven't been discovered yet.

I'm not sure I'm going to get very far this way, but there's a lot of undiscovered stuff out there.
To be honest, I haven't found very many interesting things, and most of the stars I hit are TT, but I'm in it for the long haul.

At this rate (40 jumps, 3 hrs/night) , I should make it to my next target nebula in about 85 days.

Anyone else exploring this way, or am I nuts?

Your Nuts! :D

But if you don't like to look for systems yourself and just jump to each system that the route planner sets for you that's perfectly cool as well. Really up to you and your personal preference no right or wrong way. Sometimes when i want to make progress in terms of distance I plot out 500lyr then scoop while honking and aim for next jump, open map if nothing good close the map and make the jump. But normally, I stop, scan the sun, honk, then check out the map.

EDIT: If your really feeling froggy and don't want to jump to fast to far downgrade your FSD :D

No, you're not nuts (well you might be but that's got nothing to do with exploring), I'm doing the same at the moment.
Tonight I will be mostly doing an 86 jump economy route.

I like to vary things though, so only stick with fastest/economy route planning for so long and then switch to individual
star targetting, which is even slower but more profitable (usually), before switching back.

You've got to have variety out in the black otherwise the voices start...

No, you're not nuts. Sometimes I think that players forget that the journey is as equally important as the destination. You'll get there, and on the way you will have found systems that other players have jumped over.

I switch between the two modes depending on how I feel.

Enjoy your trip, and plot your route the way YOU want to.

As Arjin says your nuts... i used to do the same but realised i wouldn't get to see much of the galaxy unless i used a faster method.

Having said that i am still slow compared to other explorers and cannot resist scanning cloudy objects incase i miss something

It can be, but not necessarily. I model myself after Old Earth's Antarctic explorers. The bulk of the journey is routine, just a means of getting close. You've then got an approach leg which may be tricky. Having done that, only then does the exploring really start.

Crazy or not, it looks as though I keep good company.

I'm also hooked on listening to the bodies in the star system, big thanks to whomever discovered that.

It's personal preference. I like to fly fast to a place nebula/whatever, and then take economy route home. Then I know how quickly I can get home if I'm bored/run out of sandwiches.

Guess it depends on how and what you want to explore.
I for myself use fast route to make distance to some destination i want to go and then use economic route (3-7 Jumps, as much A,F,G,K stars as possible) to do the thing i like most: searching for unique systems and especially for elw's ;)

First piece of advice. There is no right way to explore. Do what you like and ignore everyone else, including me.

Second piece of advice. There is no second piece of advice ;)

Third piece of advice... why are you still reading. Didn't you read the first piece of advice?

As others have said depends on what you want; I had to go to the vicinity of NGC 281 real quick-like so I took the long fast steps, now that I'm here I'm using econ to cover more systems and scan more bodies.

what no number 4?
you can't leave me hanging here!! :D

I am on my way back from the core. At 18k ly from Sol I decided to stop, I noted down all the nearby systems in the console. There were 50 and the furthest was only 10Lys from where I was. I wanted to created a sphere, my own little bubble, of first discoveries. I think I must have picked the most boring part of space, apart from a couple of neutrons it was mostly rock, ice and TTs. I pushed through though. I guess sometimes you just get an area which is of little interest.

I'm going to created another "bubble" of discoveries at the weekend. Hopefully the area I end up doing it will be more interesting.

Enjoy it it is great to find new things just reached the California Nebula after 9 days (10 Jumps a day) thinking about going back with all my data I gathered in these 9 days our go deeper in Unknow space.

Do fast routes on the way out and economy routes on the way back.

But does depend on why you are exploring.

For me, it depends. I explore in several different "modes" if you will:
  • Sightseer - In this mode I pick a destination, use fast route to get there, then switch to economy to explore a strip across the nebula or cluster I was headed for. This maximizes my screenshot production.
  • Exploration - I'll randomly switch between fast and economy to maximize my distance covered and systems scanned.
  • Prospector - I start of as Exploration, but when I find a metallic ring, I mine what I want, then switch to fast to get back to the bubble. This maximizes data on the way out and mining profits on the way back.
  • Surveyor - I pick a random block of space, use fast to get there, then manually plot everything inside the block to ensure I hit every single system. Then use fast to get back to the bubble to sell off the data. This maximizes my compulsive tendencies. :)

I haven't done a survey trip yet - that will be my next trip after I get back from Sag A* and turn in my data for the CG.

Entirely up to you, Commander.

She's your ship. Fly her on your own course. And beam back all the interesting stories and pictures you come across. We love reading about the adventures of our fellow Commanders.
