Hardware & Technical When do you think real VR will be released?

I'm not talking about Oculus Rift, I'm not talking about SteamVR, I'm not even talking about Fove. Some of you may remember (one of?) Sony's Playstation 2 ads, where they envisioned the Playstation 8. It was an orb-like machine, where the user breathed in a speck of computerized dust which plunged them into a video game, taking them completely out of the real world and into the virtual.

I personally believe that it will be possible, and it will be within our lifetimes. How long do you think that will be? Keep in mind that when I say our lifetimes, I assume that the average age of us is about 30 years old.

I'm going out on a limb and saying another 40 years, maximum. Anyone disagree for any reason with the estimate, or the belief itself? I created this thread halfway through reading up on Fove. :p

So basically some matrix/ghost in the shell type thing? Longer that 40 years I think, we barely know even now know how the electrical/chemical activity in the brain/nervous system works. We'd have to know exactly what is happening, then we'd have to work out a way for translation between computer to brain and back again.

True VR gaming has been a dream of mine for such a long time, after seeing The Matrix in '99 (or about that time).

I've noticed with the rise of the current gen of VR, that this question of 'more' is increasingly common.. due to the increasing demand for true VR, I'd be willing to wager that there are people making steps towards this today.. so taking a gyess at the current rate of technology my guess would be within 20yrs if not sooner.
I'd kill to get it within 5-10yrs, though that's wishful thinking haha

I believe gaming in true VR will be the pinnacle of gaming, and that day can't come soon enough.

Well they are publically testing hooking up your brain to a computer (remember that the various governments and military high tech companies are 20-50 years ahead of whats currently out) so I would say 20-25 years is feasible.

Yeah, the matrix is great inspiration for that. Imagine actually piloting your gigantic Anaconda, running across the land as a Scout in TF2, Roaming in search of food in DayZ, driving your tank/piloting your aircraft in War Thunder, etc. Oh yes.

Here's hoping it doesn't end up like the first arc of Sword Art Online (being trapped in an online game for 2 years, where dying in the game results in real-life death).
Btw, this topic probably should've been in the Off-Topic subforum.

I was quite astounded by the news that they've grafted feeling back into an artificial leg..

I would hazard a guess that the first real virtual reality will be a very invasive procedure and be available to those people who really really need it. The first person who gets it done for fun will be considered an idiot. It's the way that most amazing new technologies creep in.
