Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

Saw you in the chat Alec, great to have you there :D

I'm no expert, but here's what I did in order to get things to work:

PC with win 8:

Install Icechat 7
enter irc.ca.us.mibbit.net in favourite servers
port 6667
Connect, type /j fuelrats

You are now chatting with fuelrats. Now for some sound:
Go to options-> text highlighting. Click enable text highlighting, then click add.
Enter the text you wish to highlight (Ratsignal), set it to the colour of your choice. Now press the "..." in sound to play. Select a WAV file. Mp3 files has proven to be tricky. Test sound to see if it works and you are set to go :)

Samsung tablet (android):

Install Andchat.
Using the same procedure as with Icechat 7 setup and connect to the fuelrats.
Go to settings->notifications->extra words to highlight. Type in Ratsignal.
Make sure notification sounds are on.
Select ringtone from "Notification ringtone". This might be customizable, but I haven't found out where to put wav/mp3 files that I want to use. It makes a sound and vibrates, and that's good enough for me.

You can now go and mow the lawn, do the dishes, do the laundry... actually you can take a shower, just make sure the tablet/pc doesn't get wet. Just turn the volume up enough so that all your friends and neighbours think you are important. Last but most importantly: Run to the computer when the signal goes off :)

iPad

I've tried a couple of free iPad IRC apps.

The first (IRC999) I couldn't really get to work and kept crashing.

The second (TurboIRC) is fairly unexciting (and does have in app ads occasionally) but does at least work. Basically you click Connect, then New Server. Enter Mibbit as the server name with irc.ca.us.mibbit.net as the Address. Leave 6667 as the port. Give yourself a nickname and click Done. Once you've connected to the mibbit server click Join a channel and enter #fuelrats as the channel name. Bingo - you should be in. The app claims to support audio notifications (and there are options to turn these on in the iPad notification center) but I haven't managed to get a peep out of it yet.

Edit: I'm also trying out IRCCloud. It's free again and has no in app ads although you do have to register with an email. This seems a bit nicer than TurboIRC (including the option to highlight words like "Ratsignal") and does play an audio alert if a message comes in while the app in minimised.

You should include the link to the fuel rats website in the OP.

Done. I was waiting for things to switch around so that we didn't wind up with a circular reference. :)

Todo:
  1. populate library
  2. COMPLETE (populate loot store)
  3. create a page of "randomness" (e.g.: Jim Stienman's "ratmobile" pic)
  4. COMPLETE (create a leaderboard)
  5. create a roster page
  6. create a "videos" page

Notes:
The roster is all messed up and probably doesn't matter much; lots of people just post here in the thread "I am in" (which is fine) I think the roster is probably superflous and I don't know if it has any value to maintain (other than historical) I will probably turn it into a table and keep a copy on the site.

I am trying to keep the amount of content on any one page to a minimum (which is why I did the single non-tiling background) I don't want the site to get complicated and wordy. I have a bad tendency to do that.

Edit: OK I'm a tired and sweaty badger.
I updated some of my lacking CSS skillz and did a fancy leaderboard. Check it out.

The irc chat is a very nice feature, but I think I'll skip on it. A little too much overhead for my little brain :)

I'll check the forum, and other rats can always contact me ingame if I'm near someone in trouble.

Please add me to the FUEL RATS list for commanders , im just back to civlisation and i am properly fitted out in my T6 Explorer. Can dispense 16tons of Fuel to the needy as i`ll be exploring at the same time out in the void.

Just wanted to say badger - loving your work on the fuelrats.org :)

Amazing job - well done :)

Agreed! Just came home from work today, and I see 14 rats ready to jump in to the rescue :D

Welcome! As 16 tons is all good, however you only need a maximum of 8 for the general rescue. Of course it may happen that you have to do 2 rescues while out there ;)

I know but might as well be tooled up for a extended exploration refuelling misson on the outer rim :) I have noticed that my jump range has decreased by 5 LY (23LY now) , but thats to be expected. It`ll mean i`ll just be slower getting to where i need to goto :)

You guys should add some screenshot links above/under the video links so CMDR Aitken can get some publicity ;D and keep in mind not everyone runs vid recording software, but may want to 'document' the rescue(s)!

Long live the Fuel Rats!

Don't know if anybody's mentioned this before, but could we apply to Frontier to have a Fuel Rat decal available to apply to our ships?

It's been mentioned as a dream for us but :( it wouldn't happen, FD would be opening Pandora's box; it'd be like giving one of your children a sweet but not the others.

I can think of a few other reasons why, in it's current state, our decal is, well:

"There was once a dream that was a Decal. You could only hwhisper it. Anything more than a hwhisper and it would vanish... it was so fragile. And I fear that it would not survive implementation."
