How do I respond to [DIRECT] from another player?

If another player sends me [DIRECT] text, and they are not a friend, is there any way that I can reply to them without using [LOCAL]?
I just got texted by a player and there doesn't seem to be any way to respond...

type "/r" then space in the chat box.. or use "tab" to cycle options

make sure when you use "tab" you are faced towards a wall or structure of some sort.

Thanks, vaguely remember reading about the /r somewhere. Nice and old-fashioned. IRC integration.
I had the R button bound to Quick Comms but that didn't work obviously.

I have selected key bindings to switch communications on, then its just a case of tabbing through, its the second option. You can tell as the text goes to direct and yellow.
The problem I have is that I am bad in combat as it is, without trying to type at the same time...

It fully supports the Python language. I've written my own retro version of Elite using Python and I play it when doing a long supercruise trip. I got to Elite ranking when going to Hutton Orbital .
