Imagination

When people use the word imagination, they will often use it to mean immersion. Not pretending that there's stuff in the game that isn't there.

Example:
When exploring it's rather easy for me to get immersed into the feeling I am buzzing through vast unexplored space alone in my Asp. As opposed to playing a game where my 3D model of an Asp buzzes through a simulation of vast unexplored space.

This will lead to a different playing style. Someone who is immersed in the game will not shoot at NPCs for the lolz. Someone who is immersed in the game will not mind the 500,000ls long travel to a distant star whilst occupying themselves, because that gels with the immersion. Someone who is immersed in the game will not make use of gamey exploits, because that would break immersion.

Posting to increase cultural learnings from Ziggy for make benefit glorious game of Elite : Dangerous.

Now when I use imagination, I do pretend to be a Space alien from Mars who only will land where people sparkle.

The trick for a game developer is to design a game that encourages immersion. Frontier have done a pretty good job of that - although some of their recent updates are at odds with the idea.

That said, in VR the immersion you talk of really is great stuff. It will be interesting to see how and if VR changes gamers attitudes towards games, if it's convincing then other players start to feel like real people, rather than just characters on a screen.

Sob, I was in the military for 30 years, what imagination I had when I enlisted was beaten out of me lol

I like the way it's explained in this.

Very well said ziggy, pretty much sums up something I've tried to put into words since I was 10.

Ps my phone autocorrect ziggy to soggy, your new nickname

Soggy Stardust won't work, it'll turn to starmud.

I concur. All the scientific evidence points to the fact that stardust has a very low humidity of less than 1%. Stardust needs to remain dry to keep its friability, and the latest research points towards this friability as the "magic" element of stardust, in a similar way as to the workings of free radicals.

They work hand in hand for me, that is a great song too from a great film :)

Well, that one depends on the type (and amount) of boosters one is consuming. I wouldn't go as far as predicting which ones you take, but I'd bet they are classified as "soft".

I think ED has lots of immersion.

So much so that it shows how much potential the genre has.

For that alone it could win an award.

Great post Ziggy, any unusual occurrences I find a way of explaining with a healthy dose of imagination.
Wow must have just blacked out there, weird anomaly, even managed to take my shields out, (in response to a bug that seems to have been fixed in today's patch).
I will not however fly 500k ls in super-cruise to visit a star, unless it's black! No matter how desperate I am for a cuppa tea!
