What's happened to the ring systems?! They look terrible!!

There are something interesting going on with rings.

First, when jumping in from supercruise LOD is awful - field disappears for some moment, and then reappears. It's obviously a bug and should be fixed.

Second, however, jumping out of asteroid field is very well done and LOD is nearly perfect as it should be.

As for optimizations done - they are still looking for configuration that would work for everyone I guess.

Horrible people

So telling

Literally Hitler. Yeah he used to say stuff like that.

Hey Hitler are you invading Poland?

"We're aware of it. We're looking into it"

Oh Hitler is this because of the Xbox?

That honestly made me laugh out loud :D

Gotta make it run on the Xbox One somehow, ... sigh.

It is very disappointing to see these kinds of things. There are a lot of things that have gotten uglier since the Beta.

It gotta be run on AMD, Mac OS X and people doing dual core setups even game's specs says four core CPUs.

You can't have both. Something's gotta give.

Expect same nerfs cutting down SC because it won't be able to run on normal regular setups. Don't even need XBO for that.

However, said all that, some of issues pointed out are bugs (ship texture? Really? Last time I checked GPU memory was least of XBO issues), and some of those are optimization problems (asteroid fields). And yes, they also said they are doing optimizations for low end setups, whcih includes OS X and XBO.

Man you like to push you analogies a long way don't you! Sounds like you will be rounding up people with such opinions sooner or later... :p

It's because it's Friday. This is the day we traditionally go to far on this forum. Like that time we compared Star Citizen vs Elite Dangerous to Space Raiders crisps.

That's a game I would actually play! Crisp shaped ships! Those would sell like hot-cakes on the Store (well more like crisps probably).

Is that shader check an option in a config file ?

Yes, this is how to disable:

As an experiment if you're experiencing stuttering that has gotten worse in 1.3 try disabling the shader warming.

You can disable the shader caching on startup by editing your AppConfigLocal.xml file:

<PlanetNoiseTextures
ShaderWarmingEnabled="0"
/>

Does that make any difference?

Michael

I just wanted to add this in here, as it highlights the issue pretty well:

It's seems every major patch, I end up posting about how the Ring systems get a graphical downgrade. This has happened consistently since late Beta. (For some reason I'm also the only one that seems to care all that much about this. :D )

So what gives? The ring systems look pretty awful in my screenshots above. I'm just heading out to check some ice ones...

EDIT: As a comparison here is how they looked in Alpha. And to clarify, I'm not comparing the close up details of the asteroids themselves...I'm actually comparing the level of detail in the distance. Look at how they used to transition into the distance compared to now. In this screenshot it's only in the far distance that the LOD starts having issues...

Indeed they have been degraded beyond acceptance IMO: Look at these two screenshots, one from inside the cockpit (ASP) and one is external:

I am standing just behind a roid rock in a ring belt and there are no shadows internal or external wahtever casted from the roid on the ship.
This is plainly unnacceptable dear Frontier. I don't know and care if it is due to consolitis, performanceitis, or whatever reason you may bring up, I have invested a fortune on my PC (i7 6 core / 12 thread 3.2GHz, 12 gigs RAM, 6 gigs Vram) to play Elite on Max settings and this is ED 1.3.06. Can I have beta / gamma graphics quality back please  ?

And before you ask all settings maxed, latest Nvidia drivers, everything up-to-date...

They don't reply in 95% of they threads (or thereabouts)...so no, this doesn't mean anything. ;)

Directly related to ship insurance cost... Yes... yes! it's all starting to make sense now!

Edit: I also noticed a difference in quality in 1.3. Noticed if you fly at high altitude over the belts, the distant low LOD ones look very white and don't blend nicely. Clumps of them seem to pop at the horizon as you fly.

The very first "Toxic Waste" training mission, in the standalone Combat Demo 1.00 version (old build, repackaged as demo)...

The same "Toxic Waste" training mission, from the built-in training scenarios in our current built 1.3.06...

The old 1.00 certainly wasn't the best it's ever looked, but even that clearly has more going for it than 1.3.06.

Something has broken.
