Elite / Frontier What were the legal statuses in Elite?

When you look at the status screen in the original versions of Elite, you see cash, elite rating et.c and legal status. What were the different legal statuses (the first is clean) and what is required to achieve them?

Thanks

The other two were :

  • Offender : Basically you've been a bit naughty in trading with Narcotics and the like.
  • Fugitive : You've been very naughty and killed a Viper or two...

IIRC in C64 version you got Vipers 'keeping an eye' on you if you were offender (hauling contraband), and they did attack if you were fugitive.

  • Legal status is a sliding scale from clean to offender to fugitive; obtaining narcotics, firearms or slaves will earn you some points in that, but the result will always be offender - though it will increase the more you do this. It does not matter how you obtained them (sale at a station, fuel scoops);
  • You become fugitive when you attack a lawful (viper or innocent) ship, though I am not sure if the status kicks in when you make the kill, or first shot - think it's the former;
  • Whatever your status, you will be able to dock at stations unless you attack a ship in it's vicinity. Though you will remain clean (if you started that way) until the ship is killed (and then become a fugitive), you will not be able to dock and vipers will come to the innocent's help;
  • If you refrain from these activities, your status will slowly reduce, though the more points you have, the longer it will take (I believe the points are 0 - 256).
  • There are a couple of ways of 'wiping the slate clean' - if you travel to a new galaxy (using galactic hyperspace) or use the escape pod, your status reverts to clean (IIRC).

Once I recall having about 10T narcotics on me, all picked up from scooping and kept them because there was nowhere for a decent price. From out of nowhere a Fer-de-Lance started shooting me, and I saw I'd become fugitive. So be wary how much you hold, and how long you carry it for! It stands out in my memory because I never became fugutive intentionally so when it did happen it stood out in memory and I had to 'go clean' for a while ;)

I know someone ATM (not me!) playing classic Elite, as an absolute pirate - he's a fugitive, shoots everything he sees (except stations and ships around stations) and he's getting along fine. In fact this must have been the way to get to Elite the quickest, for sure.

In original Elite, arriving in a system with narcotics, or picking them up enroute wasn't wasn't illegal. Leaving one was. Hence your trouble.

Cheers,

Drew.

In Elite Plus only way get Legal status 'Fugitive' is direct attack against space stations. Shooting/Crashing Cops and innocent Traders cause only that you're considered 'Offender' as that isn't apparently that big Crime in Elite Universe...

'Offender' status will be nullified after hyperspace jump or two if Criminal activities doesn't continue (very unlikely).

Clearing 'Fugitive' Status instead seems require Galactic Hyperspace Jump and switching to totally new Constellations. Hard to know for sure as a Piracy and Bounty Hunting (read: Shooting everything you can) is most profitable profession, Equally Profit-wise as well as Combat Rating-wise, thus the way how Mercenary Commanders with decent knowledge of Cost-efficiency wander around Galaxies. It's pure profit when trading stolen goods.

Annoying Bounty Hunters attack little more eagerly and Cops make more appearances around, but that's makes no difference. Kill'em All! :p

For Example. One day Once with Elite Plus. Being Peaceful Trader in Elite Plus is not really an occupation or rational career option. Not even for a Harmless Beginners.

Fully equipped 'Ironass' Cobra MkIII needs some 30000 Credits. This is question of few Hours of game Play, and particular legal Status doesn't really change anything. That's Actually very Sad.

Edit/add: Because I'm practically oriented Elite Plus Commander, I tested immediately what would be fastest way earn some Credits. 1 hour long test video concerning possibilities combine always nice bounty hunter profession and hard working piracy with necessary aspects of peaceful role of laizzer faire trader.

- 0.0 Credits Expenses
- 14126.6 Credits Profits
- within an hour
- No Cops
- Amounts of Bounties

CEO's Tips:
- Always shoot escape pods for more alloys
- If possible allow pirates and hunters launch their missiles for more alloys
- Do your Enterprises near station of the system (Sissy Commanders could do that even within Station's shield perimeter)
- Go back to Station Asap your Cargo Bay is full

Someone ask why? What's the point? That is exactly what means 'Open Ended Sandbox Game', The curse unleashed first time over 30 years ago.

(There are no point for accumulating bank account any more when you can buy almost 400 Galactic Hyperdrive Units, if ever needed or when Hit Point Counter shows peculiarities (Hex-numbers in CDR-gamesave File) which indicate it's gone mad because of insufficient space for further Hits, after losing Elite Status apparently because of same reason. For example.)

Crhmmm. Uh... Legal Status, It was Offender all the time. :p
