Was graphics quality stealth-nerfed in the last update?

I realize graphics have been reduced in quality since launch - there have been many threads on this topic, and it is indeed a shame.

I noticed today that the space port "innards" don't render until you're practically flying through the entrance. This is a shame, as it is immersion breaking: to not be able to see what's coming toward you until you're basically inside the "grill" is silly. Has anyone else noticed this or am I the only one?? I realize the render distance has been gradually reduced (wish the opposite was the case!), but this definitely feels different to just a few days ago.

I noticed the resource extraction zones look bad. Before the patch they where nice. I got everything on high.

Yes I noticed this too - graphics was better before and I had no performance issue, so it must be optimisations for Xbox? even that doesn't make any sense as they are separate builds.

Yeah, games looks not as good as before. Thought 1st it was that new Nvidia driver for that Batman game but it seems after a rollback its still not looking as before.

I for one sometimes had performance issues in stations, especially the fancy ones. The update fixed this for me. So it would seem to be general optimization to me which, if my understanding of the process is correct-ish, means that it's moved to a more stable state (for most) and the quality ill be improved over time. That is if I'm not spouting nonsense of course haha

And about the innards, I started just after 1.2.. and that's been the norm for me as I remember.

Yes we should gather and raise our pitchforks, graphics has been worse and worse since I bought the game few months ago and yet performance is not even better!

If you honestly compare Elite with any other game development, then you can really appreciate how hard the FDevs work on optimization. The devs are really good at trying to work out the optimization bugs for players and are constantly tweaking and toying with things to try and improve overall performance on the widest variety of machine specs. This is generally considered a good thing in game development. Most dev teams wait until the performance issues build up to some huge peak before doing one huge performance sweep. FDev do it slowly and diligently, keeping the game running smoothly while at the same time trying to improve performance the best they can. I wouldn't complain too much about this, as it is generally considered a good thing.

Sooo making the graphics WORSE is a feature now?

It's not that they are steadily worse. They are being adjusted. Just because you have a high-end computer, doesn't mean everyone else does. The game is playable either way if you do, but causes problems for others if it's optimized at a higher level. Should the devs satisfy just your higher end tastes or maximize the game so that the majority doesn't have issues? Surely if you are any form of actual computer gamer, you would understand this, as it is only a basic principle. They will change and go up and down as new features are added and new ways of enhancing performance are tested. Just because it is optimized one way doesn't mean it will stay that way. And default settings are often changed. Check yours and improve them by hand where applicable. Don't whine about something that is a basic part of any game development.

Uh you know graphics settings option exist, right?

It's all controlled by settings. There are probably some mis-tweaks in some of those settings but they're going to be dependent on the shaders or the diagnostic program that ran when you did the install. The underlying code is certainly platform-agnostic and runs the same on Mac/PC/Xbox; the coders at FD are not complete sp00pids.

That's exactly why there are graphic settings, so that people with lesser machines can still play the game while people with high end computers can enjoy it at its best. Surely if you are any form of actual computer gamer, you would understand this, as it is only a basic principle.

Anyway, I don't think this is an "optimisation fix" from FD. It's probably not even intended

Considering that they even mention the new optimization fixes often in their changelogs and you can see the changes, especially some of the newer ones (shaders on main menu for instance was a big attempt at optimizing and while it didn't fix issues for everyone, it improved things for a great number of people) yeah, they are changing them constantly. And yes, settings exist. Increase yours but don't whine when they lower something for some reason or alter something. If they never change anything, there is no room for improvement. Like I said, it gets better and worse. You all seem to be of the opinion that FD is out to get you by lowering your standard of graphics. Grow up and let them optimize the game. God knows it needs it. Boo hoo if you don't get to see that render for a few more meters or your screen isn't that perfect image. Acting like a bunch of spoiled brats over your graphics. Have you even played an older Elite? Or an older computer game for that matter? You're all like the console fanboys who were so obsessed over their consoles having the highest end graphics. Look at them now, computers overtook them years ago. Elite has a reputation for high quality sound and graphics. You all are making it sound like the game is being reduced to some poor quality 2D arcade shooter when the changes are subtle attempts to improve your quality of gameplay. Stop overreacting to every little thing. This is just another thread whining about changes to the game that are done to benefit everyone playing but because they don't suit you right this second, it must make it a problem then eh? Once again, grow up. Do any of you actually see the stuff you are complaining about? Slight changes in visuals? Really?

Since there's abolutely zero comment of the Devs (typically a sure giveaway) :

Yes...
We had an Effects downgrade, as well as several apparent Texture downgrades. I'm now seeing a few Detail Texutures that went really bad. Like badly compressed 128x128 Textures in some spots, other stuff that head readable Text now became unreadable - another good sign of a Texture downgrade.

While too early to tell - but I give it a 95% chance that MicroSoft demanded the PC downgrade for the XBOX release to look better when compared to PC Graphics. It's a very common tactic in the Console world.

I personally think this is bull. Why Frontier have bent to the will of Microsoft is stupid. Oooooh wait its because they want money and have less value for customer care and support! #TheyNeverListen
