Larger Wings

Are we ever going to get bigger wings or possibly groups of wings? Trying to play with more than 4 never works and its negatively effecting my community!

or at least make servers pickable, so we can all play in the same instance

You can do that already, its just that there are some .. 'problems' that need to be ironed out.

(By that i mean if you friend someone youre supposed to have a higher chance of an instance merge, but with P2P and home networks, to probably buggy code, we're not there yet)

When wings was released they said that 4 was the magic number. It's deliberate to prevent wings from dominating.

There’s already been a fair amount of discussion on what was revealed in the article. One aspect was the why we selected four pilots as being the wing size. When it came to deciding on a maximum wing size, we decided that four was, in this particular case, the magic number. In addition to the obvious benefits of getting multiple wings into a single session and ensuring that a single wing can always be outnumbered, there was the less sexy, but equally real issue of making sure the feedback for wings integrated well with the HUD.

Incidentally in response to the console thing. When you use it as a knee jerk response for every query/argument it gets tiring and people pay less attention when you may have a genuine point.

It just makes the game less enjoyable,we cant form big groups or wage war on each other. We cant all have fun together. The reason I blame consoles is that's the only valid reason I can see for it, they need corporations in this game. Player made factions and player populated systems. If they want us to do anything we want we should be able to branch out and have our own factions and build our own systems up from the unpopulated areas.

You need to bring some logic to your argument though.

The reasons given (in February) were that it was due to balance and the HUD. Why do you think those arguments are invalid and that consoles are the real reason?

Ok I see your point, however I think larger groups of players together would be possible. What about having 4 wings grouped to from something else. You can see everyone in your wing as normal, but in contacts you can lock onto the leader of each wing. All players in your wing would be blue, all in other wings would be blue, just a lot darker on your HUD. Do you see how this could work?

I would like to see larger wings in combat related or PvP/PvE mission based areas only. Out in the big black and supercruise keep them to 4 people.

During my WoW days as primary healer my team could keep alive a 40 man raid, all this with the entire groups' information on screen at once.

If you are smart about what you present then its easy to display more.

IMO though the (known about) port to console would have had an impact on the decision for a 4 man limit - I am OK with this however as a lot of PC users have inferior machines than the XBox so for them it would be an upscale to buy one ;)

As for balance - why not 8 or 6 ? Whats to stop 2 wings of 4 patrolling a system .. or 3 wings or 4 ? The 'balance' and I presume gank argument is highly subjective and 100% FDs call to make. (I dont agree but its not my game)

If this discussion turns into another "Guilds in Elite Dangerous" thread then it will be merged into that thread.

LOL .. always on the prowl hey Rob ! ;)

Wouod struggle to work on a console.

From the FAQ on the support page:

It will have several modes including 12 player Deathmatch, 6v6 Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag and will be designed for competitive play with matchmaking and leaderboards.

So it would struggle because of consoles BUT CQC which will launch on consoles will in CQC have 6 player wings fighting against each other?

"The consoles are ruining everything" argument doesn't really work here, does it?

Yes, I realise that CQC is a different mode compared to the main game, but my point is that technically it is possible to make the wings larger if they wanted to. In terms of design they don't want to though. Partly because of balancing issues with to big wings dominating in the main game and partly because these connections needs to happen in a much more fluent and dynamic way in the main game. Something that creates more issues compared to a closed off deathmatch map where the connections can be "prepared" in advanced before the match starts.
