Most people who are recording use nVidia "shadowplay" if they have an nVidia/geforce card.

CamStudio is a free desktop recording program.

I think Techsmith also has something that can do really short videos. For long videos they sell Camtasia which runs several hundred bucks.

FYI - the reason shadowplay is popular is because it takes advantages of some hooks in the graphics card; apparently the nVidia cards store frames that they render, so shadowplay isn't trying to grab the frames out of Windows' video driver, it's simply asking the card to cough up the frames its already stored. It lets you go back in time: something cool happens and you hit the "record" button and shadowplay dumps everything it's got - including what happened several seconds ago. Otherwise, it's not dragging your CPU at all, it's just sitting there waiting for you to hit the record button. Pretty cool.

I have a friend who likes the twitch FPS and swears by it. When something awesome happens in-game you mash to "save" button and it burps the past to your hard drive.

Feel free to ask for the explorer's escort service EES (TM). If you feel nervous about returning into the bubble, I can escort you in a wing to your station of choice. My current ships (Python, Fer de Lance) don't have the highest jump ranges, so unless I built a light-weight armoured escort at the point of contact, you may calculate the benefits/cost-factor in means of safety/time.

I am currently thinking about building a long range escort ship. A lightweight Asp, properly armed, should do around 28 light years when full.
