Being the ageing (aged? I'm still younger than Mick Jagger!) hippy/prog that I am, it has to be a mix (random) of Tangerine Dream, Ozric Tentacles, Stellardrone and Klaus Schulze (the post-TD solo stuff).

Awesome for exploring. For me anyway. Your mileage may of course vary hugely.

I loved earlier Ozric's and I was lucky enough to see them live a lot in '85-'87.

Blimey, I thought I was the only one who'd heard of Kluas Shultz! Timewind was the first (and last) of his albums that I'd bought.

Great thread, I've picked up some new favorites. I use Spotify to stream my space playlist so it goes through the same sound system as the game. Then I just turn down the in game muisc and it works perfectly. Spotify updated their app so you can use your phone as a remote for the desktop player. This works out really well when you have the Rift on. You can also turn the volume up or down and skip tracks from the phone.

Thanks to ermtony for recommending Klaus Schulze. I already had some Tangerine Dream but did not know about Klaus. His stuff fits very well. Also Stellardrone fits so well it is my new favorite.

Here are some recommendations from my playlist that is still a work in progress. Space trucking by Deep Purple is a great song to start a trip with. Hayden: Creation Mass is a good opera but a lot of the songs are to short in my opinion. The Outfit TX, is good because a lot of their music is about cruising which is what we are doing when exploring but might be a little much for some. Some Funkadelic and Parliament are good because they are from outer space. Pink Floyd. The sound track from 2001: A Space odyssey. I also find that some old acid house works really well and so does the song Intergalactic from the Beastie Boys. Intergalactic works well when you have been out for a longtime and need a quick pick me up.

Supernaut goes well with fule scooping, the Black Sabbath or 1000 Homo DJs version. Skinny Puppy's song Choralone works well while scanning planets and their song Survivalisto if you are in the Rift.

I Fire up the transducer which is mounted to my cockpit along with a H.O.T.A.S, throttle, Peddles all mounted in the same position as in the game. Then I pull on the Rift look down at my in game controls reach out and grab them I throttle up grab the phone, start the stream and I off into my dreams.

Not sure if they've been mentioned here before but The Program Initiative are perfect for exploration listening. They do space and exploration themed instrumentals. Check it out:

I'm also working my way through Stargate SG1 again. 3rd season now. Forgot how little Thor is involved until later seasons. Love Thor. Cute little guy.

It's quiet out there on the frontier, so it's good to have something to listen to while exploring unless you like the silence. I personally think drone and ambient music really fit exploration because it can really reinforce the atmosphere of being alone in the vast openness.

The last time I was out exploring I listened to stuff like that, so I am with you there. I just pulled up some Ambient and related music on Youtube to play along. It does go very well with being in the deep black.

- Lave Radio Podcasts
- Stereolab (Mars Audiac and Space Bachelor albums)
- Franky Rose (Interstellar album)
- Chromatics (Kill for Love and Night Drive albums)
- A collection of songs I compiled for X3, such as: Albatross - Fleetwood Mac, Falling - Julee Cruise, Panoramic - Atticus Ross (from The Book of Eli soundtrack) and similar tracks.

Right on, Commanders!

Just started listening to these top 10s. There is a vast abundance of them and they make good playlists, and you don't have to actually watch them, just listen. The guy kind of annoys me when he makes judgements and opinions, as I strongly disagree with them most of the time, but the facts and research he does is great.

Unlike other top tens, his stuff is actually interesting without resorting to sexy/dark/conspiracy rubbish.
