Mining Lance - Useless

Well, just tried it, so here is what i have seen:

Used two of them in my Clipper

Screenshot_0000.pngScreenshot_0001.pngScreenshot_0002.png

  • As you can see, its a Small one
  • It has More Powerdraw than the D1 Mining Laser (700 > 500),
    more than the E1 Beam Laser (700 > 690)
and almost as much as the D2 Mining Laser (700 < 750)
  • Deals less damage than the E1 Beamlaser (based on the comparison)
  • Has a higher thermal load than the E1 Beamlaser, D1 Mining Laser and even the D2 Mining Laser
  • Beam is brigh blue (looks fancy)
  • Seems like it has a slower mining speed than the D1 Mining Laser
  • Range seems to be increased a bit
  • Its bugged
    • It has no aiming-indicator (the dots), will make a bug report after this post
    • The beams can visually pass through ships without harming them

So overall its garbage.

Garbage?

Seems to fit the bill rather nicely for what it is meant to be.

A mining laser that also is capable of dishing out some damage.

I think the issue is that people were expecting these to be straight upgrades rather than equal to existing items.

This lets you take a mining laser that is still capable of dealing some damage, at the cost of mining efficiency.

well...if it WOULD deal damage.

you cant aim with it
the visual beam passes through targets
its slower than the small mining laser
and the powerdraw and thermal load are as high as a size 2 weapon
you would run better with one small miner and one small beam instead, and even the Sidewinder can support that setup, while i doubt that it would support 2 Lances since they are basically size 2 from the power-stats with worse efficiency-stats than a size 1 weapon or laser.

the only "nice thing" is, that the beam is blue and that the range is increased. other than that there is no advantage, only disadvantages compared to beams and mining lasers.

The real issue here is that it's a class 1 weapon. I wasn't expecting it to be efficient or good as an actual combat laser, though I was expecting something I could toss on, say, an imperial courier - Sucks to lose 1/3 of my arsenal to mine in RES.

I was assuming power draw/thermal load of a beam, damage of a burst with 500-1000m range, and low penetration.

its more like a class 0.5 weapon.
i was hoping for atleast a medium beamlaser with slightly less damage that has the ability to shoot at asteroids.
but all i got was a "weapon" that is weaker and slower than any of the size 1 counterparts.

the only ones who are even worse than us are the Antal guys.
Everyone was expecting a "Cannon" when they read about the "Enforcer Cannon" - and all they got was a small Multicannon.
And i even made a topic about that possibility several weeks ago

So yeah...
I'm glad there was a full week testing this stuff.
-.-

That beta was more than a week, longest beta since the release. And the most important thing wasn't tested. And there are still bugs with merits.

Yeah and the weapons were not present in the beta, which is the point he was making :D

Interesting. Was considering going for Torval due to this. Might still do it. Depends, ill wait for dev feedback/patches and see what happens next.

Hope you file those bug reports.

Interesting to note the new field in the weapon description - Combat : Small ships.

I presume that means its best to use against small ships.

I think the joke was that the weapons were never released. I think....

Don't worry, they'll fix it when they release.

as a miner I can tell you its terrible, why reduce mining speed? youre better off just using normal versions. I waited 4 weeks for this puny reward

Well - you can get used to it - granted I miss a lot atm, but I know I'd get used to it again (played mostly archers in Sykrim and never used a crosshair because it rendered at the wrong depth in 3dvision).

However the underlying issue is: Why would I want this module?

I personally don't mine - tried it briefly during beta and wasn't impressed - never mined in 10 years of playing Eve either.

I've pledged to Torval because I trade in slaves - where do you send slaves?
The mines.
Why do you send slaves to the mines?
Because you don't want to do it yourself.

Why would I want to mine for the only faction that sells 5-10% less for mined materials in most of its systems due to "market flooding" that apparently never occured? if you look at the slave trade within Torval controlled systems, we manage to do that ourselves pretty easily - no preemptive nerf required (well - maybe it is, because given the state of mining, that "market flooding" would never occur in a million years).

So why does exactly that faction offer a small mining laser with combat capabilities?

Because I want to mine in a small hardpint only ship like the Eagle? A graded, it actually catches fire when you fire them for a bit - tried that myself. A pity, given the tremdous cargo and refinery capabilities it has.

Because I want to fit them on the two small slots on my Anaconda? Of course - because the additional DPS over a regular small mining laser is totally worth the increased heat, ftting requrements and decrease in mining yield?

This is just as absurd as most recent design decisions.

Except it is neither. The weapon that was already least likely to cause balance issues turns out to be completely useless.

the "no crosshair" is not the main issue, its the beam itself. while testing it in combat, i had several enemies who were visually hit, but the beam passed through. so you dont really know when you hit unless you are very very close.

and not even the anaconda should use it.
sacrifice one mediumslot for a medium miner and fit 2 small gimballed beams into the small slots - more damage and more mining power compared to 2 small lances.
the lances have 700 powerdraw with less speed than a small miner and less damage than a small beam.
for 750 powerdraw you can get a medium miner instead, and you could use the small slots for gimballed beams that can hit both at the same time.

Yeah - it was a rethorical question - of course I wouldn't fit it to an Anaconda.

In fact I can't think of any ship I'd fit it on - maybe a Sidewinder (and I doubt it could deal with the heat and fitting issues) - but then again, who is still in a Sidewinder after being pledged at rank 3 for 4 weeks?

exactly.
most weapons are somehow designed for smaller ships (only two of them are large), but after 4 weeks they should have enough money to fly a bigger ship.
so there is no use for a small multicannon or a small mining laser.
not to mention that the "fixed only" makes them pretty much unusable on some larger ships (like my clipper)

seriously, my guess?
PP weapons were simply not finished and rushed out.
i guess we can expect some more variation in the future, based on the existing ones
