First Impressions: GeForce 980 Ti

amd-radeon-fury-x-4k-benchmarks-100592003-orig.jpg

Apparently those are from AMD themselves so expect best case here. Based on this it's likely going to be a close run thing but If true I can't see any good reason to go with a 980 Ti unless it has a price drop. That Fury X runs at 50C and 32 dB and should easily overclock well past both the Ti and Titan X. Bizarre to see Nvidia screwing up their reference cooler so badly after watching AMD do the same with the 290 and 290X.

I would expect the results to be a bit closer at 1440p and the 980 Ti probably slightly faster at 1080p, again if these are legit benchmarks.

I've got a 980ti and find that running at full 4k resolution with DSR then turning the oculus quality down to 0% actually gives less judder and better visuals.

Basically tied at 4K. Much better power characteristics (compared to the 390X) as well which is nice. Feels like it'll improve with drivers but the 980 Ti will probably remain a faster card with overclocking.

Hmmmm... so I am buying a new gaming-rig for Elite - its all I play. I was planning for a single 980Ti and thought I could max all settings out. Sounds like I will still see some judder and stutter. I was also planning:

SSD for all storage
i7-5930K with mild over-clock

Any thoughts on what I need to do to eliminate any stutter? My initial thought was add a second 980Ti in SLI, but it sound like the bottleneck may be somewhere else.

Thoughts anyone?

P.S. I want the best DK2 experience I can get - I know the 5930K may be overkill for the benefit it gives, but that is not a problem if it gives me a better experience!

So how is the 980ti performing in stations and roid fields with in game SS at 1.5 in open play? and can it handle 2.0 in any given situation?
I've recently got an AMD fury x but not convinced it was the right choice though will be playing around with it a bit more today.

Back in UK... Got my 980 ti but the CPU cooler pump sprung a small leak after six months in storage and so won't get to test it for a few more days... Haven't played Elite for five days now... I think that a record! Lol

I settled on the 980ti in the end after having the Fury X for a few days. The 980ti is so much better.
The Fury X was ok, but I seemed to have nothing but problems with it. Performance was erratic, drivers caused problems with my PC hanging, etc etc. Was told to update the bios but checked that and it wasn't the problem as they were already uptodate. In the end I was glad to see the back of it.
Going back to Nvidia was like a breath of fresh air, and the performance of the 980ti is second to none. An outstanding card.
.
Edit: Just wanted to add, the best I got out of the amd fury x was 2.0ss in med/high but that was just supercruising around with no NPC's or players as I was 50k out. Hit a roid field and I'd have to switch down to 1.5 SS and lower settings. With SweetFX on, 1.5 was a major struggle too.
The 980ti is in a different league. Flying around in a roid field with 2.0 SS in game, and most things on high, including shadows, and it's super smooth and solid. My card is somewhat overclocked though.
.

Edit: Just wanted to add - The 980ti is a MASSIVE card. I think mine was 280mm and it only just about fit in to my case (antec 900) with a few adjustments to the drive bays.

To really reduce stutter you should use a RAM drive for the game files. Not sure how big the E:D installation is and it is a bit of a problem that a lot of the files are on the C: drive. I'll actually look into it when I get home. I have a machine with 64 gigs so I could create a drive with 50 or so gigs for test.

I run ED from a RAM drive (and a 980Ti). The judder/stutter still happens.

I suspect it's related to how networking (p2p/client/server) is handled, hooked into the game loop and something is waiting on a networking thing that has a timeout that is taking too much time, we're talking microseconds here. Give it a shorter timeout, at least for VR users. Speculation though, can't be sure but being a developer myself this is where I would start looking.

Up and running!

I finally fixed the leak on the holdiay rig and installed the MSI 980ti gaming 6. I have to say i am very impressed. First off, the gpu comes with a simple app alongside afterburner that gives you a gaming and oc option. The stock overclock is very nice and I havent needed to custom overclock to get ED playing the way i want it.

So high settings and ss x1.5 (in game) and I am judder free in stations. Running through fibre optic cable (damn i love London) so i havent experienced any network judder either as of yet.

Short version... MSI 980 ti gaming 6 runs the game easily as well as my two 980s back in Saudi.

Will test more later but i havent played in weeks so am chomping at the bit!

Pc... 4790k watercooled , 32gb ram, gtx 980ti overclocked, asus Maximus VI motherboard

edit: so far outposts and coriolis stations are working fine. Pre rendered shading enabled. You need more info? I thought this thread was just a general first impression of the 980 ti? ... Hence the name... :p

So as normal in this forum! 1.5 in stations, specific type not mentioned! no mention of pre-rendering shaders enabled or not. Carry on testing Sir you are doing a fine ..........

I do sometimes wonder what "judder-free" means to you. There are sources of judder that cannot be eliminated by your video card. It makes me wonder if some of you guys are just partially blind and don't notice the frame drops.

Ive had no framedrops so far... Not even ones relating to networking issues... Using playclaw 5 to monitor.
Judder to me is anything from extreme stuttering to the game seeming to "stick" intermittently. So far its been as smooth as a babys bottom!

Now, i do not have a VR, but it seems the 'juddering' (Stutter i assume) is universal across the board. Mostly it'll happen during hyperdrive entry/exit and through hyperspace, since my gtx 770 machine runs excactly same as my gtx980 with regards to fps etc on same settings (60 fps limited/60 Hz monitor), it is safe to say that the game requires very little of the graphics card and is very well optimized.

What helped me with some that 'juddering' was to offload PhysX to CPU, weirdly enough that helped loads on the smoothness of the game. That + ED high or realtime priority in task manager might alleviate for you guys also.

I do wonder about that, because as far as i can remember the game doesnt use physx.
