This is probably not what they'd announce at gamescon (my theory is that it will be the first paid expansion, whatever that happens to be), but I think it would make a lot of people very happy if there was a minor update (1.4? 1.5?) that focused solely and entirely on adding more variety. Add more kinds of station, more skins to the store, more random things for NPCs to say. The sort of thing that takes time to produce and is not terribly glamorous, but makes the galaxy feel more alive.

What they need to do is:

Improve station interiors and menus,
Make the game feel more alive, have bustling space ports with loaders flying about and moving crates etc. Scrap those cars that have been driving round in circles for the past 18 months and do something good with thr interiors!

Improve ship holo displays, the cockpits are all unique but the holo overlays are all the same so all the ships look the same basically!

Much needed overhaul on the missions system

Passenger mission missions, make the orca actually useful for players

Thargoids

Better outfitting menus with more information

Planetary landing can wait till all this is fixed

Power play was a waste of time they should have improved the main game before bolting on mini games

Whilst I do not disagree with most of your points AFAIK the thing with the HUD is that IS the same piece of software in all ships. I am fairly sure I read that we carry that computer with us from ship to ship, perhaps a little like your pipboy in fallout 3

Lol @ minor update!. Whilst I agree it is exactly what I am hoping for, imo a whole bunch of new assets has nothing minor about it.

They've done it! It was promoted as part of V1.3. I (& other folks) were expecting that it was required as part of Powerplay to introduce far more sophisticated and interesting mission for Powerplay... But in truth the missions really seem much the same.

We can but hope they get drastically improved soon.

Thargoids
No... Please no...

We need some love dedicated into the core game first before distractions. The ED universe is paper thin at the moment. Let's add depth and interest to it, before using up the one chance and time we can add the Thargoids...

Absolutely agree... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=163495&p=2506197&viewfull=1#post2506197

It's a huge orchestrated grind mechanic, basically with bar charts showing who's grind the best, seemingly at the cost of not taking the time to really add any new game play and depth to ED.

The secret of the UA will be announced and only Mac/PC users will get it, and the Xboners will rage and blow up the forums or something to that effect.

I'd be most happy if it was not a new gameplay feature but new assets to dress up the existing universe.
I would like:

- military bases/fortresses,
- mining complexes,
- prison installations,
- scientific installations with huge radio dishes and telescopes
- industrial/factory complexes
- true shipyards that look the part, with ships under construction
- large agrarian installations
- solar arrays
- True Imperials space station designs that make you feel like you are really in Imperial space

We desperately need stuff like that to make the universe feel alive.

More military npc ships are needed to. I would like to see small fleets of destroyers, frigates, corvettes, military tankers etc. moving, or hanging around space stations.

Well, "minor" in terms of features compared to something like Wings or Power Play, but still a ton of work regardless. That's why I'd like to see an entire update devoted to that, as opposed to eg a couple of new ships in addition to the core of some other update. Call it Living Galaxy or something.

I miss the good old newsletters explaining how content (stations, ships etc.) was being made for the game and the thoughts behind their implementation etc. The last few newsletters have been PR for existing features/content introduced in earlier releases. Show us whats coming down the road.. pretty plllzzz :D

But i love the ED we have now.. don't get me wrong, but i just luvs me some technical newsletters.. and with lots of pics :p

^^^ What this guy says :)

I want to see a Gutamaya designed station.

Agrre with the above. The game at the moment needs assets/varied content more badly than it needs new features.

Agree'd, we need that stuff more than ever. Right now, the games universe feels dead even with this Powerplay update which doesn't effect much besides numbers and stats which isn't much. But what I would love to see, more than ever is the long awaited "walk around your ship and station" deal they said along time ago. It's been a long time and I have grown tired of waiting for that simple mechanic to be implemented.

The nature of procedural contant generation, especially as it applies to manmade stuff, means that visual variety in this game is not as wide as it could be, not by a long chalk. I'm disappointed with that whole side of the game, to be honest.

The ship variety is laughable. It appears to be very labour-intensive to create a new ship currently, given the slow pace of new ship releases. If Braben really lived up to his own PG hype, we could have an infinite variety of ship types on demand, with slightly different ships for each of the countless minor factions, let alone the Big 3. That would give at least one part of the game the kind of visual spice that it needs.

Stations and outposts are PG, but they are all made of the same bits of kit, so they end up looking the same each time. Even the same station/outpost modules could have some procedural variety - sizes, colours, detailing etc. Instead it's all prefab architecture. Inside the stations, there are 2 looks. Did all the architects and interior designers in the galaxy go to the same school of design? Are there only 5 colours of paint available (cream, gunmetal grey, red, blue, white)?

I have no idea what they are showing at Gamescom. I felt that the E3 showing was lackluster, so I don't have my hopes up.

What I do know is that after seeing this and this, if FD wants to have any chance to stand (or even survive) the competition next year or the near future, they must show some kind of FPS gameplay and/or planetary landings, even if it's in alpha or something. I mean, the FPS module for SC had its launch postponed indefinetely and NMS still doesn't have a launch date and both could end up not giving everything as promised, but the fact is that there's two similar games lurking over the corner and both have shown FPS gameplay demos, that they supposedly intent to make it available at launch, while Frontier has shown absolutely nothing like that for ED and if they do, it's likely coming as paid DLC. If this game is supposed to last into the near future, FD better step up their game.

I bet half the Elite Dangerous devs wish they worked at Hello Games. No nit-picking from the player base (irony given my last comment in this thread, but I think that was more of a fundamental flaw than a trivial point, and one that NMS has no such issues with)! No being held hostage by a DDA with stupid stuff like hours-long Supercruise journeys and no micro-jumps! Real Actual Procedural Content! No offline mode debacle! No P2P PVP silliness to break the game! No mode switching arguments! No old blokes with astronomy fetishes to pour cold water on your more gameplay-friendly ideas!

Of course, that will all probably change once it's released, but right now it must be a cool place to be.

A few weeks ago i would've been really excited about news on planetary landings, but with powerplay being little more than a sham it became more and more obvious to me how the game really lacks depth and live. Yeah, i know: those will be included somewhere down the road. If ever. Fd, i really hope you haven't overreached yourselves...

It will not be anything bigger then what was announced at E3.

Why would they wait to announce something bigger for the game at a lesser known convention.

They had the stage at E3 the largest biggest game expo in the world. Largest in the world. Huge media following. But instead they are waiting for gamescon an expo i never heard of till little while ago.

My guess is they will announce the stuff on the xbox arena thing will be coming to pc/mac. Or that the people playing on xboxone will be in same universe as pc/mac.

I hope its something good. But after E3 announcement i wont expect anything cool. I really hope i am wrong.

I terms of ED content, I expect to hear more at gamescom that we did at E3. Obviously at E3 their biggest announcement was going to be about their new game. The xbox port was newsworthy, but it was always going to take a backseat to their latest game, and the paid expansions are what everyone else in the industry calls DLC. That's pretty much never hyped as much as a brand new game is.
