The Powerplay discussion thread.

Quit bothering with powerplay and not planning to go back

When Powerplay came out it was advertised as rewarding you for playing the way you already enjoy playing Elite while also making a difference in the power struggle.

I'm a trader by trade (ha ha!), which means looking for places where I can buy low and sell high. So I naturally assumed that by trading goods within my factions' sphere of influence, I would be benefiting them and be rewarded. However, working for Edmund Mahon entails shipping non-descript resources (not really resources, let's face it. More like invisible faction counters) to particular areas where they're needed. You're very lucky if the place you pick up the faction counters has valuable resources for cheap and the place you're taking the counters to wants to buy them high or vice versa.

In other words, working for a "trading" faction, takes time away from you actually trading.

This isn't a problem if you like bounty hunting because you can work for Zachary and go around pounding less well armed players and being rewarded for it. But for trader players I suggest powerplay be advertised thusly:

"POWERPLAY! STOPS YOU PLAYING THE WAY YOU WANT TO!"

I've quit Mahon in order to get back to actually trading instead of ferrying LOL-Counters around. If it changes in the future so that I actually get rewarded by Mahon for actually trading, I'll get involved again.

I havent tried trading yet but since you can t know the market without constantly having to dock in stations I never bothered because it is a massive time waster that makes no sense
The market should be available from gallnet

I quit last week. I'm still pledged, but I'm doing exploration now. Hopefully by the time I get back 1.4 will be out.

It was very frustrating and overall a letdown. It does have potential, lots of it, but they need to fix some of the issues like merit decay, adding powerplay missions, and making everything you do in control systems grant merits, not to mention the huge one for me, character development of the Powers and logical direction given by the Powers themselves (why do players get to decide where expansion happens?).

What makes me sad at the moment is, that since 1.3 most of the storylines introduced before (the emperors health, Halseys fate, rivalry in the empire...) are neglected. No news about that on Galnet, no new Community goals... I suspect, that FD doesn't want to distract us from Powerplay. Simply no real news about the background stories. Do Hudson and Winters finally quarrel about leadership of the Federation? Noone knows..
Powerplay is a great idea but needs much more storytelling to let people immerse in it.

I'm still undermining and occasionally drop off a load of propaganda for the Power, but it's all feeling very desperate and pointless. I've never read an opinion of PP that is positive without qualification. It's not unusual to have polarised opinions about a feature, but when the clear majority of response is on the negative side something is wrong.

I un-pledged and now being attacked :) also could not see any reason doing it.

I am a member of the Pilot Federation and Neutral too all Parties.

i'm half tempted to defect when I get to Sag. A to see if they hunt you down that far away... I just don't want to risk losing my exploration data.

Eehh? Isn't a problem for BH's?
Sure you can hunt for your power... But you don't get payed for those kills, just like you don't get paid for ferrying those tons of paperwork.

You can play PP just the way you want... You just don't get played for it(other then the salary you might get)

Just balance the trade with the ferry docu stuff.

Now I don't want to upset you.... but are you running off to the stars to avoid the bad boys ... cos your expexted super duper scrambling rail gun shield is not uber OP and you're having a hissy fit

per chance ?

don't worry I'm sure you'll have a crowd hiding out with you near Sag A... most of them the usual few/group of suspects from the forum.. about a week should make you safe from the naughty stick

have fun

IF NOT.... oh... golly gosh have fun in the stars ! :)

It's really very simple

look at the Prep, Fortify & Control systems for the week cycle

then spend a bit of your time building a route around 1, 2 or three of them... trading as normal... but picking up the required Deeds or whatever Mahon uses and when you've built up a cargo hold of them divert to a Control System or to the HQ to deliver

rinse and repeat

it's just normal trading with a added quota every 30 mins... you can top up the cargo space using the Cr's to advance.. but why bother?

Oh ...and the faction I'm with pays a bonus trading quota of (currently) 10% on each load delivered to a faction controlled or exploited system... very nice :).. this is on top of normal Wing trading bonus

Perhaps you should have asked in the Newcomers Section before knee jerking?? :) :)

I'll continue to rake in trading profit ++

A few questions on Powerplay

1) Is there any information on how long a Powerplay cycle lasts, and when it starts/ends?
2) I see there is an "ethos" for the different powers, such as: social, combat, covert, finance. Do these affect gameplay or missions available, and where can I read about the effects of each ethos?
3) The different powers have weapons that can be unlocked. I couldn't find information about which class these weapons were?

Thanks!

but when the clear majority of response is on the negative side something is wrong.

powerplay got much of its traction from much of the forum community being (vocally) desperate for new content or depth. it was at least something. it's just natural disappointment shows in the comments, but then remember that the majority of players don't pay any attention to the forum at all. only fdev knows for sure, and they're not exactly transparent in that specific aspect.

i don't like pp (quick summary: too daft and childish) but i was fine with the game as it was before pp already, so it doesn't bother me either. the waste of development effort is kinda sad, though, with so many very much anticipated features. but let's not despair! :)

I just started playing again after a massive rage quit that lead to the uninstallation of ED, until then I was pledged with Hudson. I hated PP - too much effort for not much reward. About trading, my cousin just started playing, is trading a lot for the empire - that slaver ! :D - and decided to see what PP was all about. Pledged to Zemina Torval, and in less than a few runs, gave up. He told me exactly what you're saying, adding also that even if he reached the higher tiers with the best paychecks (which would require tremendous effort and resources) it's not that rewarding in comparison with trading just for trading (less effort for reward ratio).

Currently, I think PP is too heavy on the numbers side and too light on the story and interaction side, and it presents a "new" gameplay aspect too detached from the rest - you have to stop doing whatever you do to help a Power. I'd like to see PP-themed missions, regular jobs (trade, BH and exploration) affecting Power standing and more reasons for player involvement - ad-hoc basis missions and bonuses, clear and cut monetary benefits, more community-based goals, etc.), together with QoL tools for the players to better coordinate their actions in-game, without resorting to off-game forums and similar, like a PP chat channel.

Personally, I'd trade the whole PP thing for player-made factions (AKA, clans or guilds) and more fleshed out minor factions (take the top 20 or so minor factions in number of systems and give them more individual names and themes, as well as a frontman and some artwork with it). I mean, people where already favoring minor factions before and it was really nice. Just add some transparency to the faction-advancement missions - like a little tooltip that says what would be the effects on the faction of doing it - and that would have been much better. This way the player could either keep fighting for the faction of his choice or form his own with his friends.

On a side note, this run I plan to bounty hunt my way to a fully equipped Vulture, then I'll fully deck a Diamondback to explore the galaxy until I have a more meaningful reason to stay in populated space. For you traders I suggest playing the neutral (perhaps solo) game and just enjoying the game. I for one plan on trying my best to not take notice of PP.
