Jettison (abandon) shouldn't exist

Now I'm neither a trader nor a pirate, so I have no personal stake in this, but to me player pirates demanding traders drop their cargo with the abandon option so that they can hawk their mugged wares on the open market instead of having to operate from a backwater black market outpost is kinda... gaming the game.
Its removing one of the big risks from being a pirate.

Discuss.

I disagree. The big risk of being a pirate is getting blown away by someone who doesnt want to give cargo. Also look at it on the pirate side. Sell in the open market and get full sell value, or on the black market where you dont get full value as the fence needs his take.

It needs to be there for players to give each other cargo but I agree that if a shot is fired then due to hostility this option needs to be greyed out (not the ideal method as I can see ways where this is not correct but a method needs to be found to close that loophole). In saying that, there are more important tasks for the devs to solve first.

The option is there so that you can pass cargo to friends or anyone who helped you out as payment as we can't transfer credits.

From what I remember of the description of Wings, can we not share cargo in Wings regardless? I don't think that Wings suffer from the same restrictions on cargo transfer.

It was a requested feature to allow friends to share cargo. But I can see how it can be abused by pirates. Not sure what the solution is - maybe it should only work for people on your friends list or in a wing, but even that could be abused too.

Simply refuse, act stupid and ask "Whats abandon mean?"

To be honest traders that actually drop cargo are rare, most just try to run. From that standpoint pirates should be happy with what they get no matter if abandoned or not.

After every merit farming run I jettison my cargo(stolen enemy supplies) in front of my power's HQ, it quickly became a tradition.

They are my war tokens and I display them at our HQ to frighten our enemies.

It was added to allow players to drop cargo for a friend without the friend getting a fine. That said, Despite being a pirate, I agree with you. It does feel a little metagamey, getting a hold full of clean stolen goods.

On the other hand piracy does need all the help it can get. If it was part of a complete overhaul to limpets, that would work. Until then piracy has too little profits as it is to lower the amount they can make by so much.

This is the reason I gave up on piracy, not worth the effort or risk. Shame, as it could be the most exciting career choice.

But then removing "abandon" would just offload the same net effect on the wings mechanic: pirate demands the victim wings up before dropping cargo.

This could be dealt with by putting a significant time delay on joining a Wing if any of the players in the Wing have fired upon the ship that "wants" to join.

What IS the difference between jettisoning and abandoning? I've never done either! :)

Cargo that is dropped will become stolen if a non-wing-mate picks it up. Cargo that is abandoned / jettisoned does not carry the stolen tag when similarly scooped.

Ta Robert. I'm only familar with the options in the RH menu, is that dropping or abandoning? And how do you do the other?

The system as it stands is perfect, and the added complication of having to select an option when a pirate is counting to 10 before opening fire really adds to the tension when you're pirated. One pirate asked me to drop 10T. I asked him if he wanted rares or Biowaste (I'd stopped to pick up the Biowaste specially, as I'd been attacked by pirates twice about 15 minutes earlier). He asked for rares. I jettisoned Biowaste. 20 seconds later I was almost on the floor crying with laughter looking at the insurance screen. Oh, I did abandon my rares immediately afterwards, but I think my Cheeky Trader routine got me a one way ticket to hell. :D
