All fights against AI = afterburn + FA off turning

The only time I can actually I have some form of fun during combat (that is to say, I can sit my seat and not facepalm while rolling my eyes from boredom) is in conflict zones. Doing the stupid acceleratorflippflip doesn't work when theres 2-3+ shooting at one target. But thats really it. Sad. Besides, someone mentioned Freespace 2...Freespace 2 had way better pewpew and the game itself was structured very well. It only had to focus on one component of a scifi space genre sim thing and that was combat, and it did it very well and in an entertaining fashion.

Just everything about it is way better. The only thing ED has over it are the fluid flight controls/thrusters/graphics and audio. But everything else about it, for what it is, is just superior.

Well I literally just asked her and she said no they don't as they don't need too. As a said they use lateral and vertical thrusters instead very effectively.

This is correct, they have no need. Also I can add that AI combat is getting a big upgrade. It's what I'm working on right now, adding a load of new tactics to make things more... interesting. ;) Oh, and with the new tactics, flying in reverse won't work. :) You have been warned.

If a target is using a tactic that is besting you (really just keeping you from ending it quickly), why not change up your approach?

Use the pattern against them, or force them to change by baiting them into a chase.

Either way, if what you are doing isn't working, try something new...you might learn a few tricks along the way.

Yes of course the AI will get a big upgrade. Nobody wants a Thargoid that's a pushover.:)

Thats the thing...its not besting me. Its not landing -any- shots at all. Its just drawing the fight out. And like Sarah pointed out, just flying backwards and facetanking stops the fight entirely since the AI will just chase me and get blown up. I just dont want to use that strategy since its so cheesy.

But okay. Sarah, if you're being legit and that the games going to get spiced up, I will believe you. I'm happy that someone at least knows what I'm talking about and I'm not crazy!

Thank you for the reply.

I had an NPC interdict and stay close to me during the combat, he knew I was in a slow turning ship...my T7, of course he did not expect me to use FAOFF to missile him as he triggered my mines :D

I use do that all the time in my Eagle. The Eagle was great for that. The only ship that was able to actually get away was the Viper, but outside of that none of the other ships stood a chance.

The only reason why I ever upgraded was because Morbad highly recommended it. The Viper isn't bad at all, it's fantastic. It's great at conflict zones. But actual dogfighting, with how AI is in the current state, just makes fights get dragged out. And I can easily stay outside of any actual harmful range from enemy ships by flying in reverse, so it just makes dogfighting itself impractical, at least against the AI.

Hello, While you are at it, please check the logic of a Conda with 10% Power Plant, be able to shoot fly and recharge the shields, i know this would affect players to, but there should be a minimum of coherence, lets face it if we got a 10% able Power plant we are dead in the water (we could run or shoot but not do both ) !!!

Then show me how to do it since you apparently know how to not take so long. Please, by all means, do it. Prove me wrong. Destroy at least a Harmless Cobra while using a Viper, only gimbled lasers and/or gimbled multicannons. Show me you can do it in less than 5-minutes, or 10-minutes. If you need a program to record yourself, download and use OpenBroadcaster. It's free and works perfectly. Upload it to Youtube and show everyone here you can do it. I'd rather just learn than complain, so please, show us.

Are you seriously trying to tell us that you cannot destroy a NPC ship like a Cobra in less than 5 minutes? Furthermore are you trying to convince us that this failure on your behalf is the fault of poor AI programming?

There is no need for anyone to make a video for you as there are dozens of them already up on UTube.

I watched three minutes of that Freespace 2 video and saw a succession of large ships arriving singly and unescorted through a gate and being mobbed by the defenders while firing ineffectually. It looked about as interesting as the first level of a tower defence game. What was I supposed to see that beats ED, in your opinion?

Either prove it or . Door is that way =>

Thanks.

Its not my opinion, the game is just better, lol. Just about anyone whois played it would say it. Also, cool avatar. Hardware is one of the movies I try to get people to watch.

Destructible capital ships, larger wings, more explosions.
Oh and generally speaking of Freespace, impressive beam weaponry, capship beam is badass.

In freespace this can work. Ships are lot faster and maneuverable. When that is the case you can make AI actually dumb as washtub.
Player simply cant keep up with such speed and maneuvering (please don't brag, hear me out) and you actually don't use the ships full potential.
You overshoot targets and overdo the steering and so on. Couple that with fast moving target that is somewhat acting like it wants to be hit.
And you get really fun space shooter.

After some time player gets more skilled and shots the enemies like flies. (count how many ships you take out in one freespace mid-game mission.)
You actually feel that you got good at it.
And after really frenetic mission you are introduced to something slower... you get used to slowness, calm down...
And then it starts again.

Problem is Ships are really slow.
However that will most likely never change since its multiplayer game. Devs actually talked about this a while back .....perhaps longer while... :)

Its still being sold on GoG and Steam. It still has an extremely dedicated modding team which has been constantly improving the game ever since it was released. The developers, Volition, would -kill- to be able to make a sequel. Almost had its own boardgame. Universal acclaim by credits and users on Metacritic.

Freespace 2 is simply one of the best, if the best, space combat sim ever. And to think Interplay was able to reacquire the license for it for only $7500!!! Argh.

This is all the AI does. It doesn't do anything but prolong the fights. Fly, afterburn, FA off turn, shoot, fly, afterubrn, FA off turn, shoot, fly, afterburn, FA off turn, shoot.

Thats all it does. Fights which should end in 30secs-1min turn into 10min snoozefests. Seriously, fly, afterburn, FA off turn, shoot. Is this really what you consider to be hard AI? Theres nothing to it, its just boring. Whats the point of playing if something which should last 30 seconds ends up taking 10 minutes? I'm going to blow up the other ships regardless of what happens, why have the AI drag the fight out?

Do you actually enjoy this/have fun with it? I don't even why I bother with this anymore. Its like the game purposely trying to be as boring as hell.

Nothing to worry about, that's ok, it is a combat sim not a stupid shooting range you know ;)
