I hate the new galaxy map...

oh yes I do.

It was so perfect to work with before 1.3.
Now I feel like blinded by the stars.
I only see those close to me extremely bright but none of those more far away.
I used to work with the realistic mode, so I could see the distances and colors better.
They took from me my favourite exploration tool. I feel like crying.

I can't see anything useful.

They have definitely turned down the LOD for stars in the Galaxy Map, and pretty drastically too. It's that much harder to show people the real number of stars in the galaxy when they all disappear. I wish I could turn it bac on. Does anyone know anything I could do with GraphicsConfiguration.xml to fix this myself?

Now i only ever used the 'map' view setting on the Galaxy Map.

Since 1.3 Iv only been using the 'realistic' view setting.

Though iv been to the core & still on my way back & have yet to clear the high density region of stars, so only then would i see if there is a real differance, from what Im used to seeing.
But atm I'm ok with it

The stars I want to go are so hard to see because of the many stars right before my face. They are so close and I cant take a step back because there are even more stars blocking my sight.

I really don't understand what you're all upset about. Before 1.3 I found the map to be extremely annoying. Since 1.3 I've got no complaints with the map. It seems to work extremely well now.

Hm. I must be working different wih he map since no one else shares my complaints.
But I'll explain.
I used the realistic mode to look for B systems (black holes) because of the far greater sight. In map mode filtering the B systems I had only a fifth of the efficiency. Same with finding very small nebulae and other very cool stuff. After the update I see nothing.
It is like you work with the sound of the planets in the system map and suddenly the backgound music is so loud you can't hear anything.

While i do not use the GalMap in realistic mode (i used the map with various settings/filter dependings on what i want to do ), i understand and share your complaint Gorrister.

Before 1.3 (my last trip in galaxy), i was able to plan trip 1000Ly away just by "unzooming" the GalMap.
Now it's a pain, you only see stars up to something about ~50/~100 Ly...
That makes no real long distance trip planning possible.

Ah, my previous "it's working fine for me" comment might have been premature. I can't check as I'm not at my gaming rig but I haven't been exploring since before 1.3 so I've not had to plan any journeys longer than 100lys. I'll check this evening to see how it works now.

I was in the core when the initial 1.3 update was released and the GalMap immediately became virtually unusable. Over the course of the various patches for 1.3 the map's become gradually more usable for long range planning, as they toned down some of the 'improvements', but it's still not as good as the 1.2 map for me. So I'm totally in agreement with Gorrister.

It's quite frustrating as it does look nice when you use the new GalMap in realistic mode in the bubble, it's just unbearable in a densely packed region like the core, or when you zoom out a lot.

I agree that the "realistic view" has gone downhill with 1.3.

It used to be that stars were only visible near the "plane", or "level", that we have selected (I think it's shift+mouse up/down) near the centre of the screen, whith "shadows" of large/bright stars in back/foreground, and now all stars between the camera and the "plane" are shown. It makes "realistic" navigation and looking for "shinys" more difficult or, in some cases, even impossible.
