Are we ever going to expand to the Nebulae?

Let's see there have been 2 new stations.... so far.

If ALL new stations were to be built at the current pace, in the direction of the nearest nebula which is appx. 700 ly, spaced at systems aapx. 15 LY apart.

We'll be there by 2042.

;)

Hey hey hey, there are a lot more stations than that, and expansion to new systems takes place in the daily. Look at Noco, it wasn't there 3 months ago, but now it's an independent system! :D

So far:

-Sefrys (Mercenary's Respite)
-Noco (and probably a lot more systems)
-New Yembo
-The Sirius Expedition created ~6 new systems, such as Sothis and Robigo far from human space

Not horribly bad, eh? :)

Welp, I'm off to start mining the rings of Merope A 4. Thing is, I only scanned it on my last save, so I need to bring equipment... So little space, darn.

22 jumps from here to there!

If I remember correctly from my astronomical readings - if you get close to nebulae, it won't look any different to normal space. We only see the nebulosity because we are so far away. The gas and dust is still barely above the density of the surrounding space, so the closer you get, the more disparate it will seem. It won't be like flying through fog....

Yeah this is my understanding too.

Well, if you check what asteroid belts look like, you would be very disappointed: sitting next to an asteroid, the closest other asteroid would look like a tiny dot since they are actually very far from each other!

I, personally, was amazed by the surrealistic backgrounds of Freelancer...and wish sometimes that E : D would be less realistic...

Have you seen the alpha skybox(es)? I would die for those!

Search for "ethics and credits", that combat scenario had a blood red nebula in the background, and many of the combat tutorials had a soft blue nebula in the background :)

The way nebulas work IRL is kinda like this... look at a parking lot full of cars.. no open spots just cars everywhere... from a distance it looks like a wall of cars... but if you're an ant underneath a car you can't even see them.... bad analogy let's move on.

Yes colorful backgrounds are fantabulous I'd love to see the sort of surreal Freelancer vanilla sci - fi sort of imagery, however to refer back to my bad analogy when you look at a macrocosm in the context of a microcosm you need to be prepared to be very disappointed because the scales and our reference becomes completely incomprehensible and ED is going for the real stuff.

As a newly dedicated miner I'd be absolutely in support of some small expansion to a place like that. I could see myself easily putting in the work towards a ship capable of large scale mining and travel.

Just off the top of my head lets say I set out with around 1000T cargo, fill up on limpets and truck myself out to those pristine rings and come back with enough cargo to make the trip worth it. This could warrant the help of other commanders for protection as well as perhaps give mining a bit of a boost in interest, especially with the few powers that offer trade bonuses, even if its 5% when they're not in the top 3 powers, that would definitely come into its own effect given enough cargo to sell. Explorers and Miners could have a little thing going on and then of course pirates have some real loot to be looking out for. Who wouldn't be tempted by a few hundred tonnes of Painite?

Pretty view aside I'd be in support of this if the problem of a player base big enough for it and stations being built to facilitate were resolved. A quick suggestion regarding the stations however, how about something like Jaques station? They move about so whats to stop a station making a little voyage out there as a trial run? A community goal could easily come of that, if the economy booms and stabilizes with enough people going to and from the station back to the core area then it could stay. Just thoughts off the top of my head, I rarely post but this piqued my interest.

Good ideas! I always imagined the Pleiades would have a maximum of 3 stations, and I cannot imagine that the playerbase would be very stretched because of it.
