Painite is described as being located in pristine metallic regions.
Is it just really rare because I have not found any yet and I've been in several pristine metal areas.
"Wherefore" means "why", not "where". HTH KTHX

When I head to pristine metallic rings I only mine painite, platinum, palladium, gold and to a lesser extent osmium. Painite makes up around 10-15% of an average haul (I have 96T cargo space); on a very good haul around 20-25%. I don't bother with prospectors - I analyse the first one or two fragments that I shoot off and if it's junk I quickly move on to the next rock. Takes me about an hour to fill my hold.
Maybe the question is wherefore art thou a pain to find, Painite?
I suppose a rock by any other name may be just as hard to find.
I did this with my cargo hatch closed if I have collector drones active. Then if what I see isn't what I want I move on. Saves me manually venting.that is what I do too. not wasting limpets on prospect, shoot a little at the rock, check contacts, and only then decide if to open the cargo door. only refine high-end metals and painite. on about 140T cargo I make a bit more then 2M.

yeh, and it is always funny to hear limpets bump themselves at the closed hatch..
