YAMT - Yet Another Mining Thread.

Hm.. All I see people having problem is collecting and refining.. Don't understand why people do see problem I mining proces itself...its dull and... Dumb.. Fly to a rock, shot laser ANYWARE and wait for poping chunks... Minecraft implemented more entertaining mining proces than this... In time you develop knowledge and experience where and how to mine, on which depths what minerals can be mined ect, while elite is like, hit single rock wait for random pop-ups and go to next one... While mining system should be changes so mining itself should require some knowledge and skill, like scanning it, striping rocks to uncover valuable minerals, cut them away from rock and maintain position around rotation asteroid while doing it to no waist to much time mining simple rocks and only valuable minerals/metals represented by different texture colors on rocks and /or heat map on scanner... Actual mining system shouldn't be tweaked... It's pointless.. It should be implemented as a new one. Every phase should be reworked
1. Finding Rock
2. Mining
3. Collection
4. Refining
All those points should be more complex more entertaining allowing more balance between bigger ships and possible income depending from gear and skill.
Duh..rant off..

are you sure about beryllium and indium ? As I know those aren't mineable

You are correct. Here's a screen shot of my hopper left overs. It was Bertrandite and Indite. So much for my memory.

I began taking them on board when it was obvious I couldn't get enough of the others to fill my hold.

I was expecting that type of mining (a little bit more complex and profitable) as you described it should be, but when I saw what they made out of it, well I was disappointed. And then I nonetheless gave it a try, and sadly stopped expecting any major changes to it. Lets just see what will SC bring in 2020 (or later) when it comes out :).

Tweaked my Mining Asp loadout again last night. Reduced down to 64T cargo and took 30 limpets. The larger fuel scoop made a huge difference in speed. I came back fully loaded with rich creamy mineral bounty.

I took a series of missions before leaving (98K for 1T Osmium, 125K for 5T gold, etc) and made a total of 892,000 credits including exploration data and a couple of bounties from pirates who tried to take my cargo. Total time out was 2.3 hours.

Also, came up with this build when fiddling around last night. Jump range should be sufficient for weekend trips out.

I can usually make is back to my home base from the fringe in thirty minutes so the 25m life support should let me get to an outpost at the very least.

Just a crazy idea after reading this thread but what if the prospector limpet would allow you to target specific resources.
If you launch a prospector and click to view what is on the rock why not add the ability to menu down and select what resources to target and mine?

I'd prefer managing the refinery instead. Some people have 6 or more collector drones so you'd be doing more work reviewing each fragment. Chuck it all in the refinery, have a preset of minerals it should accept and vent the rest back into space.

I find mining to be reasonably relaxing.
Find some missions in high tech stations and try to find a decent ring system without any stations. Mostly there aren't many pirates out there either.
If you can find a few high tech system close together, do some trips back and forth. New missions might pop up.
2 limpets is good enough, 3 might be better but don't really need it imo.
Once you get the hang of it, you can easily fill up your 64T cargo with precious metals and some painite using a total of only 20 limpets.
Also avoid irregular shaped astroids and go for what I would call the round meatballs :)

What do you prefer and why:

  • Belt clusters
  • RES Sites
  • Rings, far off the RES Sites

I usually prefer rings off site, and tried a Belt cluster today. The cluster is wider, has "richer" roids, but you need to close the hatch and speed to not waste your limpets.

I am liking mining over trading at the moment. I've traded for the past year...I'm a bit over it. I can do one or two passes each night, but then I have a huge urge to play another game.

Mining is quite chill. With two collector slots, I've got 4 running around gathering for me. The prospector seems useless, as someone said...it's easy to just blast a rock and see what's inside. I'm in an anaconda, so I don't exactly move fast. Usually the thing that breaks my limpets is a fast spinning asteroid. If I'm moving, the limpets just make a screeching metal scraping sound, but no harm done.

I also like that you can go to a high-tech station and more or less wait around for mining missions to pop up. Boom, I already have tons of osmium. $300k for three.

I agree that it would be cool to program the collectors to "ignore" stuff like galite and indite. FD could even turn it into some sort of mini-game.
