Add a story quest for noobs so they can't refund with steam

This or similair topics crop up pretty often and i always say the same thing, tbh a story is a solid suggestion but thats effort and we all know FD dont like that :p. Theyve always had a free an easy option but never bit onto it tbh.

Release the single player demo the pre-orders and such got as an actual released demo...from a week before release i was practicing the controls and fighting my brains FPS setup in roll and pitch etc. The difference of how confident i was on release (and getting into the take off and landing tutorials) vs the friends who picked it up on release and wrote their ship off 2/3 times just getting to grips with the controls was night and day.

Something that given only a 2 hr limit to deciding if your ever going to get along with the game just isnt enough for some. I know people who got interested in the game and actually had to go out their way via un-necessary channels to find the single player demo which is a totally standalone product. Making it official and legal would allow people to get past the general learning curve and maybe stick with their purchase.

They will play it all the way through because reasons. Then they won't be able to refund through steam because they played too long. Then they might actually give the game a chance beyond the refund time limit.

I think this might just end up with more unconstructive whingers on the forums - if they don't like it let 'em have their refund and leave :)

Add some GOOD 'quests' for everyone not just the unfortunate noobs who just spent their money on it. For the unfortunate non-noobs who already spent their money too.

This is sound business logic, pretty much what the game is already.

Is there a better reason to add engaging story content to the game? Maybe take a DDF feature (just one per story) and make it a in game story reward...

The first few hours are some of the best. Those are the hours that offer a real intellectual challenge, it's a little bit old school.

It isn't for everyone. That's ok. There is a strong market for complex games.

The problem with 'story' modes for Elite is that they would have to be generic in order not to be at odds with any changes to the dynamic game world. So you can't mention politics really. I think the best way to do that is to enhance the missions and encounters to be more complex and branching and interesting. That's what the previous games tried to do and certainly what Frontier ultimately should continue aiming for.

Having all players experience the same scripted story at the start works well for some games, but isn't it a little bit linear for Elite? Aren't we supposed to be choosing our own story from the outset?

Congrats on making a whinge to complain about whingers in an nonconstructive way.... well done!

>>Add a story quest

..or missions that have some kind of storyline / purpose - I've been waiting for that since alpha..

Edit: in fact, an extended starting mission for beginners wouldn't be a bad idea.

THEN

Maybe they could write a couple for us veterans who are tired of moving X to Y and assassinating Mr Anonymous for no apparent reason..

That's a marketing line used to cover up lack of content. To be able to blaze our own paths we would need a game environment conducive to emergent gameplay.

The only way to really do that is through economics, and we do not have the kind of ingame economy to support it.

No kidding, economics is the science of how we interact with one another. FD has tried to emulate politics and, tbh, fallen flat on their face by creating a freemium type of experience.

Market economy tools supporting intergalactic economics to support blazing your own trail, and story based content supporting the prescribed 'roles' are what ED needed to be.

If the "secret announcement" is anything but a crafting industry and free trade, ED will just be a footnote in the history of games.

I aim to please ;)

EDIT: Wait, does that make your post an unconstructive post about an unconstructive post about unconstructive whinging? Whinge-ception? ;)

The problem is Steam. They should never have gone with steam in first place. Every transaction now from even the FD web store related to Elite dangerous Steam gets a cut of that.
FD is just giving money away to steam.

Instead FD should just advertised on their own.

This^^

Also a lot of steam users are pewpew kiddies who have the attention span of a gnat, so would never really enjoy this game anyway. But yes, it should have stayed off steam imo.

I don't like to complain, but people whingeing about those who whinge about people's whingeing is getting a little tiresome..

Oh yes, they should have stayed off Steam - much better having fewer sales but players who actually play rather than lots of Steam sales from people who play for a few hours before quitting.

Much better.

Or perhaps, not?

IMHO story modes conveniently cover up the lack of a coherent complex open world and make anything that the player has to do after the story feel bland and empty. The focus on Elite should be the modern Elite game, not a space adventure "movie experience" game. We already have those.
