best way to dogfight (non-pvp combat in general)

Why is backpedaling the fastest way to kill a ship? You have sidewinders and eagles constantly flying over your top and fat slow dropships constanly hovering over you as you turn to no avail. The only way to combat this is reverse thrust. Note that you don't have to do this, you can joust and kill your opponent in 10 hours or backpedal and do it in 30 seconds.

Take a look at this. I was searching for footage on Li Young Rui's itano circus and found:

And then I notice how to effectively have your target in your sights without being a great distance away is to backpedal. Is this an intended game mechanic because I hate having to constantly fly a vulture.

It won't be for much longer as they're going to be introducing AI tactics to deal with reverse thrusting continuously.....supposedly!

I only have to fly backwards for Eagles. It is a valid tactic, but the goddess of minions says she is going to fix that, would be interesting to see how.

They already spiral while closing to avoid being easy to hit, and if they are faster than you, they use boost aggressively to attack your flanks.

There really isn't much more they can do, unless they start doing what wise players do; which is not pursing ships that reverse away from and force the would be reverski to come to them.

If you're flying a Vulture and you have to backpedal, you're not using the ship to the best of its abilities. I fly Vulture or Courier mostly, never backpedal or joust, and my targets rarely leave my sights for more than a couple of seconds. 50% throttle, then use the manouevring thrusters while steering (and the only time I use the backward thruster is when I'm too close to the target and need some space).

Yes, I've coded new AI tactics to deal with this. A lot of new code on the way...

Personally I'm gonna miss those tender loving moments where the NPC's veers off, exposes it's belly to my full killzone, and I release my full arsenal including the C4 cannon onto the vessel, and it goes kaboom...sigh, oh well.
I guess it will be ok, just as long as nobody tells you about the "npc-as-deer-staring-into-headlights-and-i-will-not-fire-my-weapon" effect that currently makes it so easy to kill your minions, just as long we can have that, then I'll guess it's gonna be ok. Eh, ups, blew it, sorry guys & girls

Sorry, I've fixed a load of issues with my minions... and given them some "fun" new stuff! ;) Well I think it's fun... :) You're gonna love it! ;)

can't say I've ever back pedaled tbh. flight assist off should get you back on target and i drive pretty much the slowest Vulture config money can buy.

Full backpedaling, FA/OFF, and vertical thruster will easily bring any NPC into my Anaconda's killzone, if they insist on advancing which is what SJA must have changed the tactics for.

Flying backwards was the way to kill the Thargoids on the Amiga way back when.

Old gamers call it The Kaufman Retrograde. The name comes from the board game Star Fleet Battles, where most star-ship's heaviest weapons only fired into their forward arc.

Your enemy come to you through a hail of gunfire. How does that work? Because as you reverse, your enemy's position in space moves towards the centre of your targeting reticule. It has to if they try to keep facing you - and they have to face you to fire at you if they have static weapons mounts. If they're armed with gimbals or turrets they have more choices, a lot more for turrets.

Having NPCs flying parallel to you while blasting you to pieces with their turrets is not going to be fun. We'll have to develop a whole new set of tactics. Looking forward to it Sarah. Think of it as evolution in action.

I believe it is know as Khans Ladder, I could be wrong, something about escalation.

I am sure i remember one of your posts about the reversing tactic, having one npc ship hold back at the rear, while another in front i believe it was. So when you reverse the rear npc stays on your tail.
If i am correct, i am hoping my idea might counter it, instead of reversing, boost past the front ship, and turn 180, faoff whilst turning and hitting reverse then. Both ships should be in front of me then. And i can still use the reverse attack. hopefully.

Good evening Me lady, all is well with you I hope?

Your newer monsters; is an NPCs wealth/rank taken into consideration, what ship fitting is set? I feel that I have to question this, as rookie Eagles are ripping shields apart, like never before.

Are we ever going to AI that lets us dogfight at super high speeds? Like the ones in anime and movies such as this

As it is now, most of the battles consist of jousting and reversing. May it's because I'm not using VR.

Fyi you read my text wrong. I don't want to use a Vulture to achieve fun dogfighting as that ship is too easy and limited.

Don't need the VR to avoid the jousting stuff
