Pausing game while in Solo

LAN Solo and true SP would be nicer, not only for pause, we could use it for fun but currently solo is true skinner box.

And solo is used to cheat players in open.

I wanted offline for the mods I hoped it would enable (as well as being able to pause it) - just look at the stuff done for Freespace 2 and how long has that been going?

Also, that's the second time you've stuck out a "solo unfair" bait - I don't think anyone's going to bite ;)

I've conducted a few further tests; it looks like the maximum time the game allows for the image write is 67 seconds, beyond that and the game shuts down and the crash data upload screen is presented. So much for my makeshift pause function, no way I can squeeze a wee out in that timeframe :(

Really...come to the Open vs. thread and learn the truth of the game!

Sorry, this is an online game. If you want to 'pause' you have to exit the game.

Yes, I realise that. What I've been trying to demonstrate is the feasibility of allowing a Solo instance to pause. I don't play this game as much as I'd like because I know I'm going to have to leave the computer at a moments notice during a play session, usually only for a couple of minutes at a time. I've been minutes into a furball before and had to quit out. Now, more often than not, I choose a different game to play, one that can be paused, which thankfully is every other game that I own.
Anyway, I'm going to stick a thread in the Dangerous Suggestions forum, it looks technically possible.

Good luck!

I find it annoying when wanting to pause the game that I am presented with a dialog that effectively says "Are you sure?", while my ship continues flying behind the screen. So I have two requests:

1. Could it be made possible to exit immediately to menu with a single key-press without requiring confirmation? (unless this already exists in the options - I'll check this in a moment)
2. When playing in Open, I fail to see the justification for not allowing a genuine pause even while in combat. Granted, the background simulation can't be paused, but if I'm hosting an instance for myself only, why shouldn't I be able to pause immediate gameplay etc so I can step away from the computer quickly?

Forget the galaxy for a moment. Imagine instead this is a racing game. Imagine you are on lap 3 at the 1st turn and you are in 2nd place and drafting behind the leader. You feel the urge to pee. You want to just pause the game and all the other real life players in the game to just keep going around that track, unable to take your spot, while your car magically drafts behind the leader, whomever that may be, until you return?

If you've ever played any multiplayer game, you know you cannot do that. You can die and while the death cam is panning around, you can do whatever you want, but you cannot, in the midst of a battle, just pause the environment and return to it where you left off while others are still moving along. It's not parallel universes. This seems like common sense.

My answer: This is absurd. You are not playing single player. You are part of the same LIVE universe. You are just effectively shadowbanned.

I'm turning in an assassination mission. Alarm goes off. Balls, I'm late for class PAUSE.
Come back from classes ten hours later. Turn in assassination mission.
This is silly in my opinion.

Ha that's my very first post in this forum!
The point other people and I tried to make was just something like "combat logging" (didn't know this term by that time) which however requires the ship to be out of danger. The background simulation should go on without interruption for sure. So this is essentially a "ESC-Save and exit to main menu-Confirm" in one click. Now I've already got used to this click sequence and I no longer need to sit in an RES for hours on end. I instead sit in SC with my back pointing toward the sun and go afk.:D

Even though Bugbear hasn't clarified his post, the thread title is "Pausing game while in Solo".

Here's another analogy for you - imagine playing a computer game where you are the only person in a level. You've made sure that no one else can join your level. Your actions in the level will not affect anyone in their own games until you leave that level. What difference does the active state of that level make to other players while you go and enjoy a hot streaming jet of relief? :)

In solo nobody can affect anyone else, basically all pause would need to do is stop all ships in the area, all timers and spawning of npcs.

Its simple as solo doesnt affect noone else at all.

Yeah, but you can't. (Dem worlds n planets keep spinning y'all).

then why not pause them too, all it seems is FDEV know there could be a possibility of Single player but dont want to make it as it seems they loose control of the whole thing. With shadow bans allowing players not affecting BGS why not make it so Single player doesnt have networking and allows pausing of everything.

Ofcourse you can pause the game when in Solo, in theory, but when unpauzing you need to re-sync with the global state of the galaxy. Commodity prices need to be updated, stellar bodies need to be moved to the correct new location and any other changings that happened need to be incorporated. Which basically is the same as logging out and back in, as the unpausing would just give you the laoding screen again. The only solution is to sever the links between Open and Solo, so Solo is truly not connected anymore at all, or possibly only loads weekly updates for PP and such. We have a the Open vs Solo thread with a million and then some opinions on just that, feel free to check it out. ;) Barring that, a real, high-speed, pause/unpause is simply not possible in any game mode. Despite its appearances, Solo is simply not the same as Singleplayer.

Had another little play today, by spamming the screenshot keys I kept a Solo instance just outside a ring station paused for 10 minutes before deciding that was long enough. Everything was fine but I was unable to request docking of enter SuperCruise (hmmm, didn't try Hyperspace, must try that next) so the Solo instance must've become de-synced from the BGS.
After more trials it seems that it's linked to the maximum time a Solo instance can be disconnected from the internet (which appears to be around 2min 7sec maximum). I've carried out successful pauses of 2 minutes in SuperCruise, 4 km from a ringstation with 10 NPCs visible and in a variety of Signal Sources.
Even in an empty instance the game still 'calls home' about every 2 minutes, why is that do you think? Can't be updating the BGS as there's nothing to update...

Didnt we have long threads about issue this a few months ago? Seemed bonkers to me then that anyone would think you could pause the universe while you went for a comfort break... Checked again and still bonkers
