The Bounty Hunting & Bounties tips, and general discussion thread

Someway of paying for updates on the location of a high bounty Player would be useful. Black market stations might give you better tips or perhaps allied systems might message you.
Just a thought.

I'm inclined to agree with this, a few extra tricks/mechanics implemented in the game to help the bounty hunter zero in more easily on a player in the top 10 (even going beyond this for a longer list but I'd expect that sort of live data takes up bandwidth and all that), but these high value wanted targets should at least be advertised a bit more (somehow) and make them more hunted and perhaps 'a bit more' easily tracked.

Ah this game can be annoying to find legal\worthwhile PVP, I can understand why people just murder other players for no reason other than boredom. Anybody want to help me out?

Players playing like this are a big PITA and they are ruining the whole game. We need big big penalties for senseless murder. Please have all those alpha-/beta-backers in mind who wanted an offline mode. That´s exactly the reason why.

Well I just went to Gliese 868 again and found a couple of people to PVP. Just got killed twice because I attempted to ram a clipper when I had >60% of 660MJ shields and 100% hull (not upgraded) when the clipper had less than 50% shields and got destroyed immediately both times. I guess I forgot how light weight the FDL is compared to the clipper XD. Loving the practice though and I won't be trying any ramming against a clipper again :p

Bounty on my head for the first time

Up until now I've lead a low-profile clean life but I couldn't resist a quarter of a million credits reward assassination mission so I accepted.
Kill some 'hero' in a nearby system, it said, so off I went.
After some time in SC I found him in a Python accompanied by a Vulture so I interdicted him.
I took some damage dropping back into normal space and despatched him with my Python's burst lasers and cannons.
I was about to line up on his Vulture wingman (which was pounding me with lasers) when the local cops turned up and suddenly I'm wanted despite not firing on the Vulture. Is this normally what happens?
I'd already collected a few local bounties killing pirates in the system so I jumped back into SC and headed for the only station in the system to claim the local bounties.
I was surprised I was given landing permission given the bounty of 5,500cr on my head.
I headed back to the mission system to collect my reward and the same faction is in charge so I'm wanted there too. Again, surprised I was given landing permission.
.
Couple of questions:
Is taking damage after interdicting avoidable?
Was I lucky to get landing permission both times? ie. if I'd been scanned would the station have opened fire?
.
Bounty lasts for 5 days so I suppose I'll have to head off to pastures new for now.

Well, you killed a local hero, they're going to be quite angry, I'd suspect.

Also, about your bounty, you can always land with a bounty, and the station will never fire upon you, only the security ships. It's a bit bonkers.

You can just leave the system, the bounty on you is for that specific system, unless an NPC or player scans you with a Kill Warrant Scanner, you should be fine.

Just get the hell outta there, far far away.

Thanks for clearing that up. I agree it's a bit bonkers. Being 'wanted' should have security coming down hard with furious and righteous anger and stations at least refusing landing permission.

Wait the 5 days or.... You could land somewhere, buy a sidewinder, crash it and when you respawn you wont have a bounty on your head anymore :p

I'm aware of that tactic/exploit but it feels kinda 'cheaty' to me.

Now that I know I can leave the station with no danger from the station's mighty weapons this is what I'll do.

You take less damage with better quality interdictors.

I've learned something new. Thanks :)

This just happened to me too... was in a res site, saw a juicy target, and was *just* a little too quick on the trigger. Hit him just before the "wanted" showed up, and suddenly I had a 350 credit bounty on my head. Now the guy still exploded, and I was still rewarded with 50k bounty when he did.
So I did as I always did: Got out of dodge before the swarm of local authority vipers smelled that 350Cr, and headed for the neutral system next door. No bounty? No bounty to pay? What?
I assume I'm doing something wrong, so... I go back to the first system, and make for the station. Gonna pay this bounty if it kills me!
I'm in a cobra so I scream in through the letter box. Scan detected! Oh crap oh crap oh crap, made the fastest landing of my life, and "enter hangar" immediately. Phew!
Go to pay the bounty: No option to despite the glowing "wanted" warning.

I resort to google, and find that It will be... a few days before I can pay it? But this is my main system, that I do all my work in!
Very well. I buy a sidewinder, and fly outside. Turn off my shields. Throttle down to 0. And let the viper swarm kill me.

That was my first time dying in game. I was amused to see that the "free sidewinder" option also teleports me to LHS 3447. But no option to just go back to my cobra. Fine, pay the insurance for my suicidewinder, then sell it again.
So total real fine was like, 5k or so. Not to mention that I have a sneaking suspicion that that's not really "Me" anymore, but my memory-dumped clone. Philosphers might argue that it really is "me", is indistinguishable from "me", but I don't buy it...

Yes you will and it will be extended to 7 days.

Been there, done that.

Get out of that system until it expires then go back and pay it off.

you just have to be careful upon docking the station you're wanted in. to see your wanted status, they have to scan you first, so if the security ships scan you while you're docking, both they and station will open fire on you and that's almost certain death if you are less than 1km from station. in that case put 4 pips to shield, spam chaff/scb and boost the hell out of station and frameshift jump as soon as you get out of mass lock. use your lateral trusters + spin your ship slowly around as incoming projectiles from station has rather slow velocity and you can manage to avoid quite a bunch of them if you're not running in straight line away.

security ships are hanging outside the letterbox and wont scan you until you are pretty close, usually <3-4 km, so just align your ship from 6-7 km distance to the letter box, get permission and boost in like crazy, dropping speed just before you enter the letterbox, even if you get a ship scanned message few seconds before letterbox it will break once their los breaks as you enter the station as it takes about 4-5 seconds to finish. chaffing also delays scan from players, but not from npcs afaik.

another method is to use silent running when entering station, but that one largely depends on the type of ship you're flying, smaller ships and ones with better heat management tend to have better chances not being spotted. you can find plenty of methods how to do it on youtube, just search about smuggling

Some of these BB combat missions are basically hiring you as a hit man ... if you want to be a pure bounty hunter (on the right side of the law) maybe stick to pirate hunting missions.

The hero was probably not wanted and when you opened fire you yourself became wanted. It had nothing to do with the Vulture.
You should realize that some of these assassination missions are illegal and will make you wanted.
You can avoid that in some cases if you have to kill someone in an anarchy system. Kills in those systems won't register.

A station does not detect your status. The patrol ships of that station will detect your status if they scan you.
You got lucky this time, but in general avoiding detection is doable if you know what to do.

- Line up with the entrance at approximately 7.5 km away. Ask docking permission.
- Boost towards the entrance. Stop boosting when close to the entrance, lower your gear and glide inside.
- You can currently delay a scan with chaff it seems.
- You can use silent running, but in general it is not necessary.

The whole process becomes a piece of cake with some practice. I love sneaking in as I smuggle a lot.

Is taking damage after interdicting avoidable?

Throttle down to zero before you activate the interdiction process. This will minimize or even prevent damage.

Was I lucky to get landing permission both times? ie. if I'd been scanned would the station have opened fire?

Yes you were lucky. And yes the station would have opened fire if a patrol ship had detected you.
Being allied with stations helps. Allied pilots are low priority targets for the cops.
But if you hang around in front of the entrance a patrol ship will scan you eventually.

Throttle to zero before interdicting. Nice one :)
As it happens I am allied with the station faction so I guess this is why I got lucky.
I'll take it as read then that security ships AND station will open fire unless someone else comes along and confirms otherwise.

With a small bounty like that the countdown timer is usually a few minutes - check the transactions tab - it should have a timer in the top right of the bounty notice. Jump to another system, wait the alloted time - it will then say on H jump in the top right when ready. Go back into your previous system and continue with your game as normal - next time you dock just pay the fine - no need for sidey suicide or anything like that.
