My warped mind regards 'buffing my helmet' as something else entirely... It's certainly one way to pass the time in supercruise....

Since I'm mostly out exploring if I have to supercruise to some distant point of interest I spend my time in the galaxy map looking for my next destination. Neutron stars don't find themselves after all 
When in civilized bubble I try to focus on what's ahead and pay attention to ships sneaking in behind me.
That's cause I'm trading or returning with mined minerals/metals, or doing courrier runs. Being interdicted while being AFK in game when doing those things is a no no
Most of all I try to have myown music on in the background. I find it less... hmmm boring to flying long routes in SC with my music then ED's.

Catch up on galnet news.
Check how things are going for the various powers.
Check galaxy map for new potential bounty hunting sites. (Preferably with nice backgrounds, like another planet/moon/gas giant in close proximity to whatever RES I'll be in.)
Out of game:
Have a youtube video running on second monitor. (Podcasts, reviews etc.)
Tab out and do stuff like check forums, preview loadouts on edshipyard, etc.

The only time wasting I have to do is generally when I'm traveling to very distant stars. When I'm in system traveling between planets I generally don't have enough time to alt-tab or anything else. When I do have more than about 5 minutes I usually go AFK and clean dishes or pack my lunch for the next day or whatever other menial household chores need doing.
