Because most cars are automatics now, the issue is a mute point. But when they weren't, getting the mostly right-handed world to use their left hand to shift gears was a terrible idea.
Additionally, if ever in an accident, the arm closest to the door has a MUCH GREATER CHANCE of being injured. As a right-handed fellow myself, I would much rather have that outside arm be my left.
