Hardware & Technical New PC build - is this ok?

HI

I've been looking forward to playing Elite (since the 80's) since I did the backer thing a while back. Unfortunately it wont play on my current laptop. I have played it at work on my super machine which has brought me to the idea that I want to build a PC for the job. Ive been reading all day about what to get and what not to get -- sooo much choice.

However, I picked a pre-built spec and then priced it up individually. I had a colleague help as she knows more about stuff like that. Here is my suggested build. My budget was under £1000 and Ive managed to get a monitor in as well.

If anyone with the "knowledge" could run their eyes over it and give me an overall impression I would very much appreciate that.

Many thanks for the help and I'm really excited about all the hours I will have to spend to gain my skills (I can launch and dock) :)

It's just OK but so costly. Personally I'd buy a built refurbished one and best Graphics Card affordable plus do make it a Hybrid Drive for best speed and large game storage (just partition it).

I'd be tempted to go with an i5 instead of the FX. Might as well go with Windows 7 as it'll upgrade free to 10 soon anyway, though the price probably isn't much different. No need for 16GB of RAM, 8GB is more than enough for now and the foreseeable future.

Also consider a Freesync monitor if going with an AMD graphics card, that makes sense.

Hi
Thanks for your quick reply. When you say buy a "built refurbished one" where would I get that? And I'm guessing that you mean to then upgrade the refurb?

Can you give me some idea what you think is too expensive?

TBH -- I'd love to go out tomorrow and get this so I can play asap :)
Thanks for your advice

Hi and thanks for your advice. what i5 CPU would you recommend and would it be ok with that mobo?

And would you mind explaining the "Freesync" monitor (and maybe a wee example too?)

Im thinking of getting it tomorrow from: http://www.scan.co.uk/

I knew guys on here would help :)

I seen benchmarks comparing i5/7 to Xeons (sorry I don't go with AMD as they run hotter or used to so needed constant fans - maybe different now). Xeons can keep up with them and it depends on the actual game. i5/7 was built to include 3D advanced processing and yet gamers still buy better cards. I'd just put most of my money in a new card (has good warranty) and the refurb from ebay e.g. Dell Precission. Some are classed as servers so be sure to get the inside slots as needed. They don't have new drives so is best to buy the Hybrid. You save half the cost and spend more at the same time on those 2 components.

Yeah if you're going with an i5 you need an intel mobo as well. The 8320 is a decent CPU it's just not awesome. What you save on the memory is probably best put towards an i5 and a similarly priced mobo but if you're really not bothered about it the 8320 will be fine.

Freesync - http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/freesync#about

It might take a bit of research before you find a good one - they can be a bit random in quality but the good ones are really nice. It's pretty new though so there aren't a lot of 1080p ones around the £25 mark, most look a bit more expensive still.

Version 2.0 of the PCI Express bus on the motherboard. Please note the majority of current graphics cards are in version 3.0. Perhaps take a motherboard with a bus PCI Express V3.0 for the maximum performance ? (Version 4.0 is for 2016)

It won't make any difference to performance, but makes sense to go with V3 for future-proofing.

How no difference ?

Because current cards can barely saturate a PCIe 2.0 bus. It's really just an advertising number point.

I'd be tempted to up the PSU output a bit - maybe 650W rather than 550W.

Only if planning on Crossfiring later, 550W is more than enough especially if going with the Intel CPU. Even with the FX that combo will be unlikely to go over 300W (at the wall) at any point, so in reality you're looking more at 250W at max load, which isn't even half the PSUs capability.

Hey thanks to everyone for all the help. I'm still really tempted to buy tomorrow, but I will make some changes.

Intel Core i5 4590 and a mobo to match.
I'll drop the memory to 8GB (2*4GB)
I don't think I can go as far as the Freesync monitor though.

If anyone has any more advice then I'm all ears :)
