Very, very interesting, Han_Zen!
Tons of informations!
Should I remember to everyone that the mysterious disappearance of the Highliner Antares is mentioned in one of the Galnet Articles regarding the Starship One disappearance?

BTW I like all this ED lore connections with the UA you/we are finding...

True the whale ties Are the best lead we have had on this - and it fits perfectly with "obvious" clues we have been overlooking. Way to go Zen !

I found a star named Antares in smack dab middle of nowhere in the uninhabited section of the Galaxy. Is that relevant?

Ship scanner can be switched between linear and logarithmic mode from the functions tab on the right hand screen. To my knowledge this has not been tested neither by myself nor mentioned on the Wiki. Could some one with a UA rule this out? Also, if the purrs do indeed occur via Bitstorm's theory perhaps changing the turret firing method will have some effect. Hell, why not try every button (sans self destruct) in the function tab with the UA both in hull and in normal space.

I really wish I thought of this when I had been given a UA to play with.

The thing is that even if UA is related to whales in some way, so what? What structure, planet, or star screams WHALE at our face?

Well, the ones Han Zen mentions above in the FFE lore for starters.

Lots more to check, but the paralells are there.

We are Ahab then, aren't we?

You can be Ahab. I'd like to be Ishmael and survive, thanks. ;-)

But the planet of New California doesn't actually exist in the Liaququ system now, does it? Also it appears to be an earthlike, if galmap is to be trusted.

In terms of locating more UAs, are there any commonalities in the star types of the systems in which they have been found so far? Such as age, stellar type, mass etc, or indeed any other equal features of those systems? (Again apologies if these are old, already discounted questions).

So few have been found (see wiki here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Unknown_Artefact for locations, not sure it is up to date) I am not sure if anyone has tried to do this as there was little to compare. We have a bit more info now, so might be worth a shot if you wanted to compare the "source" systems on the wiki. Keeping in mind those may not be the actual source of the UA, just where the convoys appeared, which may just be RNG spawn location/rate.

See earlier posts. Several New Californias exist, it is Liaququ which does not. It is not beyond FD to change the names of old FFE systems to something else in ED, or to merge the characteristics of two old systems together into a renamed new one (a certain group believes it has found one of these already). And earthlike presumably does not preclude the presence of whales. We are 75% water after all.

We can tell you a lot about the cargo hatch of the T9 where we find them! :D:D:D
Watch the 1.2 trailer. Searching for constallations in your question is nuts IMHO.
We searching for transport convoys. Has absolute nothing to do with the "source".

Happy hunting!

So what's next for the whale lead? Bring the unknown artifact in an orca near one of the New California and listen to its sounds?

Wondered about the UA source myself. Since the salvage convoys were in 3 permit systems, although they travel outside them while moving.
Isinor being the one that's reachable but since minor faction that controls it,isn't outside that system now, makes difficult to reach for me now.
The other two systems don't have stations that we know of I think and no idea how to aquire them, yet.
I imagine witch's reach will be significant.
Anyone have any info if other two systems are reachable yet? LTT something and witch's reach.

Maybe the fish isn't that clever. Maybe any "New California" will do?
The scanner only gives the planet name ;-)

LFT 509. Not sure if the change made recently to fix a permit-bug (extending faction distance for granting permits to 15Ly IIRC) made any difference to LFT 509 or Witch's Reach, as neither have stations or factions last time I checked. LFT 509 is a Federation system, so it is possible a Federation naval rank might grant a permit for it. I'm in the Rift at the moment but plan to sell my data to the Feds around those two planets when I come back and see if anything pops.

Will try grinding missions there after work.
Thinking of plotting the systems on map along with other UA sighting locations. Might revel something,it did help with the virus outbreaks. There is something to that too.

The more I think about it the more I believe that the whale connection and New California is the obvious "answer" we have been missing.
