Bring back The Blue Danube

Personally I'd prefer to hear an electronic version of the piece, as the C64 version was not played by an Orchestra.

The electronic music feel would seem more appropriate to me.

The electronic version in the original game was really down to the hardware at the time, there is little doubt Dave Braben would have preferred it to sound like what it was a nod to, which was the docking sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

That film version for Kubrick's film was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Of course if you wanted to hire an orchestra to do it, it wouldn't be cheap, look at the size of the Vienna Philharmonic here (on this occasion conducted by Karl Böhm).

There's probably something like 110 musicians there, plus a world-class conductor, and then you've got the miking and recording, and also need a venue that would project the sound properly, i.e. if you wanted to do it well, you'd need to hire a venue with brilliant acoustics, somewhere like the Bridgewater Hall or similar. In other words it would simply be far more practical and affordable to license an existing recording unless FD wanted to throw away a big chunk of that pledge money.

Theoretically you could make a nod to the electronic version by using perhaps Garritan Personal Orchestra and something like Finale, but good as Garritan is (I bought it because I like the samples) it wouldn't be a good as the real deal.

I suppose FD could sell the music for you to play so that you have a generic piece of music for docking but if you wanted blue danube, you either have to reach a higher rating or pay a few pennies in order to unlock that function. I suggest this since that would not help someone play better but people could pay to have the experience they want. Maybe pay for a music importer so that you can select any piece of your own music to have in various parts of the game like the background music in stations that you have docked at etc. A few possibilities of added revenue streams for them.

PS Since I suggested it, can I please have the blue danube docking music for free? :)

Nice piece of course, but the musical point Kubrick was making was that the Pan Am shuttle had to synchronise its roll rate with the station, effectively locking it into a waltz. So I'm not sure it would work with Canon in D, since that's in 4/4, not 3/4. If you want a waltz, then Strauss is your dude.

Hi, yes I'm aware it was a nod to 2001 docking sequence.
I suppose speaking from the POV of an old fogie, I was 16 when I played elite many years ago on the C64, I just have fixed in my memory the 8 bit music.
Not that I'm suggesting they use the 8 bit music, but my personal preference would be a distinctly electronic sound to the music.
I'll happily admit though it's just for old times sake.
I guess I can understand why many would prefer real Orchestra music.

Good thing about old masterpieces, they are free to use. No copyright.
If a industry spec computer programme plays the score no need for recording a real orchestra either.
It would be good if in Elite the Blue Danube plays from inboard the ships own speakers, not from a mysterious high quality orchestra from nowhere. Would give a sense of being in your own ship and going through traditional routine and cultural enjoyment of docking to a certain theme.

I would prefer terrible elevator music, played from a scratchy old LP with lots of pops and squeaks. Then a message from a terrible barely understandable intercomm, saying how you are a very important person, you will parked in the next 27 minutes. Wherein, it takes 52 minutes, but you get the reassuring message every 2 minutes how important a player you are.

/end irony/
