Renaming the Random Names

I know there are community projects like the Galactic Mapping Project, but I know we can REALLY make this a great universe by the devs implementing a way to rename the randomly generated catalog names. This will give an extreme drive to exploration. For example, if you are the first person to discover a system, then it would be nice to name it. Of course there would be a simple naming filter, along with a report button if anyone abuses this option.

Possible rules?
- You have to detail scan the whole system, minus asteroid belts, in order to rename it (no matter how big, yes, even the 100+ object systems.)
-Once a name is taken it can not be used in the same exact spelling/numbering for another system.
-Reported systems with offensive names will be reset to their original catalog name. (If this would cause a manpower problem at FD, then the servers can auto-rename it if the system is reported enough times.)

I feel it would give even more meaning to the pride, and joy of an explorer.

Anyone else with me?
Anyone against this? If so, why?

Thank you for reading!

I don't explore much but this would give me much more insentive to do so! also maybe some thargoid and derelict ship encounters to increase excitement and money earned, right now it is pretty skimpy. Great post :D

Dude, if the devs honored the efforts of Erimus and the exploration community, my faith in this game would be 100% restored.

No.
People will just make stupid names, maybe not offensive, but immersion breaking.
Suddenly we will have systems named "James Bond" "Peanutbutter" and other stupid stuff.

There is a way one could implement this however ;

Make system naming a one-time perk available for purchase at the store.
This would make it easier to moderate names and provide additional revenue for Frontier.

At first I thought star naming was a good idea. But travelling through a region such as HIPA-AIM is more immersive than a field of stars called "Jim loves Paula" and planets called, Paula's bumps, Paula's naught bits, big Paula etc. Some people would take it seriously, a lot wouldn't.

No. I do wish people would stop volentering my money to Frontier. I paid for the game, I don't want every little thing to cost me real cash.

NPC's were named by kickstarter backers. What makes star systems different?

Indeed! Seeing Zap Branigan flying around is already immersion breaking. If I want to rename a system 51kly away to "Derthek's Folly" how is that more immersion breaking?

I'd be happy if they would let us name just the Earth-Like worlds that we've discovered. Then there wouldn't be any immersion breaking silly names on the galactic map.

This is the mandatory post on every one of these threads (there are lots of threads on this).

Some people (not me) paid lots of real money for the rights to name objects. If I were one of those and found any old joe soap could name stuff for no cost, I would be very angry indeed. FD were probably daft to paint themselves into this corner - I think they could have got more money in the long term by allowing everyone to pay to name things than they did by selling rights - but we are where we are.

Would it even theoretically be possible to avoid "random names" (they're not that random btw, there's an underlying system), given the sheer amount of systems we're talking about here ?

Even if they could be renamed, are there enough individual words in all the dictionaries of all the languages in the world ?

I think the point is to rename a few that have interesting characteristics, not just any one brown dwarf with a few dead planet. Let's say some one finds a ringed Earth like in orbit with a water world 30kly out. Surely that system deserves a name that isnt just a proceedural generation.

Yeah, i realize that's probably what he meant.

Just pointing out that i don't think it could be done for all systems.;)

A simple way to implement this is to automatically assign commander name + number to a discovered system.
I.e. my first discovered system would be called WOODHOUSE 1. If I discover hundreds of systems there will be a WOODHOUSE 1193.
The advantage is that commander names are already subject to approval by FD.
