What are your stats? ED:Board

If you are not familiar with this site, here is the link: http://en.ed-board.net/?m=cmdr

One of its nicest features is that it can read your log files and tell you how much time you have played.

And? It takes 2 seconds to do.

Everything wants me to register these days....i've been leaving a mile wide digital trail across the internet for years. About 2 years ago, I started tidying up the mess....the list of services that I'd signed up to with usernames, passwords and email addresses generated a five page document in Word. I've subsequenly closed most accounts down, and am slowly getting it back to a manageable level.

As a consequence, if registrations are required I tend give up on the service unless its absolutely essential to me.

As interesting as this might be, its not essential, and I won't register.

Very nice. How do you get it to get your rank and ships? Its not showing me that info - it has my hours etc. I dumped all my log files in there.

I wipe my log files pretty regularly.

Ah, then its not much help to you. No idea why you do this though...

You played for 16 hours in one day? (or maybe it counts the time you were logged in via the Launcher?)

Erm... i think i remember that day. Was sick, kids at school, wife at work, had been playing after midnight the night before and woke up early and continued... because you know, sick.

That part is manual. The uploading logs is only for time played.... unfortunately FD don't log all the juicy details. But it does produce the nice timeline of your play activity.

Agreed, registration is always a double edged sword. Why do they need my details to offer such a simple service? Much like Facebook I presume a free service requiring registration is making money through the acquisition and trade of my details and the processing of my usage.

That is not something that should be freely given. Not to mention, how frustrating it is to have so many emails from companies and logins to remember.

Who do it in the 1st place - unless you plan to have Google Analytics grab the data as stated by the stated Privacy Details?

The Website states that it uses Cookies and Google Analytics - I use none of those there and won't register.

I am with you on Google Analytics(Nosy buggers) I'm not sure what Browser you use but there is an excellent add on for Firefox called Ghostery that blocks all cookies and trackers.

You wanna take a guess what it's blocking on this forum? ;)

Though I agree with the bulk of your statement, for the OP it's not "freely given". You're registering for a certain "free" feature. Why don't people just say "cool" and either register or don't? I don't see a reason to critique the registration aspect. Guess what? I had to register here as well.

I personally don't care about my stats. It could be depressing in fact. I don't have any stats for how long I play other games, how many beers I've drank, how many hours I've spent in my garage with a broom in my hand, etc..

Would you prefer you data not be kept behind a username/password, so anyone can edit your details? I know Richard Stallman used to keep his email account without a password, but even he in the end had to accept times had changed from the 80s and that not to secure data behind a password was too risky.

What data are you talking about. If it's how long I have played Elite for, I don't care who knows it, except maybe the wife.
If it's data like my name and email address, I'd question why they ask for it in the first place, rather than be happy they have 'secured it'.
