After several months of playing, I've only just realised that...

It's both annoying and cool when you look at some feature and are all of a sudden :O THATS WHAT THAT IS. I thought for a long while that the scrabbly bar on the UI that looks like a soundwave was just decoration till I learned it was my ship's heat sig.

...you can find your selected hyperspace destination using the compass!

All this time I've been randomly maneuvering my ship around until the targetted system came into view!

D'oh! I'll get me coat...

Well I am glad for you that you finally found it.

The compass will also help you find your landing pad in a station. As soon as you pass through the air-lock it targets your pad...

I did not know this. I've often flown to the far end of a station, turned around to look for my pad number and flown back, whilst hoping I won't be blown to bits for loitering.

I had to unbind boost from my tab key. SEVERAL ships have been lost as I accidentally hit boost while adjusting throttle when leaving the station.
Along with a few OMG moments where I still managed to squeak out of the letterbox while under full boost

Wait you can hyperspace to other systems??? I've been flying between these two space stations for months now..
So, you are still on your first travel ? Harsh

But I admit, I only recently learned I can reboot my ship and have thrusters repaired this way (was drifting in space after battle at the time considering self destruct my poor conda)

Just to help you out there, that also points to your docking pad in stations. :D

You're welcome. :p

/facepalm

I admit, I chuckled at the OP's post right up until I read this....I guess I'll see myself out too. So much time wasted flying to the back of stations and turning until I could see the numbers.

I knocked my throttle against the desk recently. It turned on silent running, which I have never used before. I tried to figure out which button I pressed to turn it off, and nothing I pressed seemed to work. I slowly cooked to death :)

My Dad did exactly the same - only during a fight in a res.
He raged all the way to the kettle to make a cup of tea!

Hehe.....

Have done exactly the same a while back: -

Original post (06/03/2015): -

You know when you're too tired to play when...

You inadvertently knock the Silent Running button on your HOTAS on leaving a station and have forgotten which button it's bound to. So you kill engines and in a blind panic remember that on the keyboard they're defaulted to the Ins-Home-Page Up-Del-End_Page Dn keys area.

You then think it'll be be a good idea to try each one in turn to switch Silent Running off, forgetting that one of those is bound to Jettison All Cargo!

Don't worry.... You're kindly reminded when fine notifications start appearing for the 83 tonnes of assorted Rares that are being slung out of your hold by the cheap cargo handler you pick up whilst stopping over in Tanmark. Clearly the side effects of Onion Head are a lot more severe to the clear judgement of the mind than first thought. Needless to say, the cargo handler had his contract terminated immediately after the last canister floated past the cockpit window!

So currently sitting in the station after having paid my 12k fine and having unbound the Jettison All Cargo key!

At this moment in time Elite: Dangerous has become Elite: Suicidal :D

Guess you live & learn.

On the plus side.... I've increased my jump range for a short while :p

You made me LOL.

You can use the compass in stations too. It is very useful for finding docking pads.

If the landing gear is deployed, you can't boost. If you deploy and retract landing gear only outside the letterbox, you'll never mistakenly boost inside the station. On entry, deploying landing gear slows you down in case you happened to approach too fast. And, waiting to retract landing gear can keep you from getting a fine on the way out.

Only worked out today when trying to wing up with someone for the 1st time how to change the tabs in the comms panel. That one's tricky.

Yes, that first panel, the "Local" station is annoying. You tab on to it and it automatically sets you to typing. I wish they would change that. Unless they have an option to not set it to auto typing and I'm ignorant of it?

I think the thing is if you use 'Quick Comms' keybind you go straight to the text box, but if you use the 'Comms Panel' keybind maybe you don't have to escape out. Don't know tbh.

And least we forget the button that selects the next jump point in your plotted route. I almost cried when i first heard about it.
