FDL Pirate Builds?

Okay folks, so I've been getting a tad bored playing the bounty hunter, and have decided to go ahead and join the "dark side" and become a pirate. And the FDL seemed like the natural choice. So I spent the last few days trading in my Anny to afford fully kitting it out.

I'm thinking about going with this build:

But I'm a greenhorn when it comes to knowing what a Pirate would need. I expected to spend a lot of time in open space without much in the way of opportunities for reloads and refits, so I'm using mostly lasers as opposed to projectiles.

Any advice?

yeah, where is the cargo space to pirate :)

What he said, you do realise you will need cargo space to store all your ill-gotten gains right - or are you going to be one of those 'other' types of pirates that just blows up the ship and lulz

I too have grown quite bored of bounty hunting, so I sold off my Eagle which I had purpose built for that job and I picked up a DiamondBack Scout. I originally intended for the Scout to become a smuggler ship and let me just say she works that job a treat! Very low temps even with FA and heavy engine/booster use. Shut down all unnecessary systems, drop a heatsink, and I instantly get icing. Enable Silent running and I'll never overheat and can mosey straight into any well guarded dock and drop 16 tons of illegal/stolen merch and have a hayday.

However, smuggling, near as I can tell, was really an after thought in ED it would seem. It's far too difficult to purchase your illegal goods legitimately (that's kind of ironic isn't it? Legitmate illegal items?) so I've been considering piracy. Hell, piracy and smuggling are almost identical when you think about it. When you scoop cargo jettisoned into space, it becomes stolen and can only be sold on the black market anyways, which means you'll be smuggling it into a station. So I'm very seriously considering going over to the dark side as well. However, aside from kitting the DBS out for a smuggling vessel, I also left some Bounty Hunting parts on there, mainly an FSD interdictor and a Kill Warrant Scanner. I'm considering ditching the KWS and getting a Cargo Scanner instead and a plundering I will go. So, I guess my point is, is it even worth trying piracy in a DBS? I don't mean to steal the OP's thread and derail everything, but since this topic was already here I didn't see any sense in creating my own asking essentially the same deal, just with a different ship.

I have no experience with the FDL, so unfortunately I can't contribute much to the OP other than wishing him luck. From what little I've seen of the FDL it looks intimidating, so I think there's always that. If I was stopped by one in a space truck I'd definitely give in to demands.

My advice: put the word pirate in quotation marks. No cargo space, no stealing, just killing - not an actual pirate.

Scout is a good little ship, but you will not be able to mass lock anything bigger than a Hauler/Adder.

To be ot - You don't really need an A4 Interdictor, not like traders are hard to grab. Ditch that for a class 1 or 2 and get yourself more cargo, better limpets or a SCB in case you need to soak up some damage.

Only 20t cargo space? Sometimes you'll encounter the odd trader who decides to drop his entire load on you or you shoot their cargo hatch and everything pours out. You'll be wasting a lot of booty. You'll propably want the player interactions firstly but it's good to make some money off of it too.

If you really insist on using FDL then what about this build:

If I insist? What would be a better pirate ship? I already have an Anny and a Python, along with most of the smaller ships, but I figured the Python would be far too slow to chase people down in.

The FdL is - like all combat ships - not suitable as a pirate ship due to its lack of internal compartments.

Like mrspoonsi suggested, the Clipper is a good choice, but the Python also works very well for me. No idea, what types of ships you were trying to pirate, but the Python is fast enough to chase down any T6, T7, T9, but also most Asps in trading configuration. Most traders are using mostly D grade equipment to save money and weight, so they are moving around far below their ships' potential in that regard. Most smaller and faster ships aren't worth pirating anyway, except the Clipper, which can only be pirated by another Clipper :)

I think most popular and viable pirate ships in no particular order are Asp, Cobra, Clipper and Python. Go with whatever is fun to you.

mrspoonsi, your build has turrets. Are you trolling us?

Drop the class 5 shield to a class 4. You shouldn't really ever need that much for pirating. This gives you more cargo and frees up power for high alpha strikes to bring down shields. My personal favorite is 3 PAs, 1 class 4 and the 2 class 2s in the center. Gimbaled beams/pulses on the side mounts. People usually stop running when I bring them from full shield to half hull :p And if they don't stop running they won't be doing a whole lot after I jam my PAs up their tailpipe.

A light weight build is also pretty nice. As are 4 class 2 railguns.

3 PA`s? VERY interesting. I heard that the FdL would be as nimble as a barn, resulting in some hard times to bring fixed mounts to bear.

Well, is it nimble enough for fight? Compared to a Python?

Everything is nimble enough to hit a stuffed freighter.

I've yet to meet anything I can't hit with my Python's fixed weapons, so an FdL (which is considerably more nimble than a Python) shouldn't have an issue.

It's plenty nimble. I rarely ever feel sluggish in a FDL. The biggest mobility issue I have is a bit of drifting and staling when I turn sharply, but the acceleration and speed more than makes up for it.

It really is a "lance" so to speak. Jousting is it's best strategy imo, and mainly how I land my PAs, but it's also great for people that don't think you're a threat not dodging until they eat my shots.

A bit of warning though, you WILL slightly cook yourself every time you shoot all 3 at once. I go from 34% heat to just over 100%. Module damage is minimum but it's still there meaning long outings aren't really viable, but pirates don't really do that to begin with. Gotta sell what you stole asap.
