Hardware & Technical New headset to come to market??

All,

As an Alpha Tester, i've been following the reports from those fortunate to have Oculus Rift headsets. However, I've seen this kickstarter has sold out in hours:

Apparently no SCREEN! Just projected into eyes with mirrors and by the review comments, sounds incredibly detailed. Could this be the item that defeats Oculus rift in terms of quality and more importantly, WEIGHT???

Sounds cool device to me, will be watching with interest.

Looks interesting! I think they'll need to look at 1080p rather than 720 to get people really interested, plus the FOV too, but they do mention the FOV thing so you never know.

The price is quite a bit more than OR at the moment and that will put quite a few people off though however the fact you can use it on a large number of devices (anything with HDMI essentially) is great.

Will be interesting to see this one develop.

Good stuff. I expect if OR gets attention there will be others hitting the market. Perhaps headsets like these will be the next 'thing', considering 3D didn't exactly take off. I'll be watching with interest :)

I saw the BBC report on this last night. My understanding was that it didn't have any kind of tracking? So you wouldn't be able to look around your cockpit as you can on a VR set such as the rift? Is that correct?

That might be a bit odd, when you go into free look mode. I have a Occults rift dev kit which I intend to use on the Alpha tonight.

You really have to know where all your key-mappings and controls are with these head-sets as you obviously can't see your hands.

EDIT: So I read the KS pitch a bit more and it does seem to have head tracking, although it mentions this being over blue tooth which sounds a bit crazy..

Is it me, or does it just look like it has fallen over his eyes? Unless the general populace are familiar with the concept, you could end up looking like a bit of a donkey.

That aside, it does appear to be a neat looking concept.

I think it's a requirement of all these headsets, to LOOK LIKE A DONKEY :)

They lost me at "Horizontal Field of View: 45°". For games, that is very poor... the Rift is already > 90° horizontal. This seems to be primarily for watching films and suchlike, from what I can see? :S

Obviously not a competitor to OR, but nevertheless something which adds to the 'wave', where devices like this might be the next big thing. All we need is Apple to get in on it and then it'll become trendy, of course they'll probably end up calling their's something preposterous like the i-spy, i-eye, i-glasses or something equally stupid :D

Well iHat makes perfect sense. I think samsung should stick to the S prefiex when it comes to their Hat device though ;)

I'd be a bit weary of that project. Sound cool, but it's rather expensive for a beta device. I think the headset from Sony is about the same and better resolution.
But resolution of 720p per eye is lower vertical resolution than what the VR researcher at Valve recommend.
Horizontal Field of View 45° is especially bad, you'll basically feel like watching a big TV screen. What you'll need for "Presence", the experience of really being there, is a min. of 110 degree. And low perstance, refresh rate of 96 hz and fast orentational and rotation tracking.
Check out the links Rog posted, it's very informative and must read before you commit. I'm eagerly waiting for the Oculus Rift, hopefully it will deliver =)

i just forked out roughly $800 on two 'toys' (OR and emotiv) so ATM im not in the market to try this .

even if i were up to get a new 'toy' a 45 deg FOV is about the same as a 22'' wide screen at a distance of 4' so why would i want to get a smaller screen and move away from my desk ? :p
