A BIG Rant

Wait, wut?? It was DOUBLE-SIDED? You could flip it over and it had another keyboard and everything on the other side? WHY DID NO ONE EVER TELL ME THIS!!

And just to nitpick, a spectrum doesn't have sides. That's what makes it a spectrum ;)

to truely nitpick, the spectrum had 6 sides... the bottom, the back, the front, the left, the right and the top... they were as follows from memory

the back is where you plugged in your monitor (tv), tape deck and all the other peripherals and the top was where the keyboard was located, unlike the C= machines (Vic20, C16, C64 and C128) which had their joystick ports on the right hand side of the keyboard unit....

Thinly veiled 'those damn kids' post, well done gramps. I quietly scoff at players who make derogatory posts about a 'certain age demographic' without understanding enough about the game or the arguments being presented on its flaws to make a cogent point.
I don't want to make a cogent point. Now get off my lawn!

You forgot that there are two separate points in your statement. No-lifeing happens in every game because demographics, but it is not the same as complaints about the game's lackings. Nice conflation though.

+1 just for the use of the word conflation.

Not the first time I've seen it on these fora, but the first time I've seen it used correctly. :)

The Golden Condor, yes. We'll meet again at that little tavern in Barcelona!
:)

Ahh now the songs in my head dammit!!

De-de de de-de.....aah aah aah

Diidn't they make a second series of that show exactly 30 years later. Just like Elite Dangerous.

I agree, people should not be judged indiscriminately based on their age there are good and bad apples in all camps...... However

that being said I do think ED is different than many games in that it does (probably - I have no data to confirm) have a wider age range than many games due to the games heritage. I know some players who have not bought a PC game in years but were all over ED due to the past games.

I think this in part is a cause of a lot of the angst. the expectations of this game (on average) from each demographic may be different and often are polar opposites and this is why when I recommend this game to people it is always on the proviso of do your homework 1st because ED IS - or at least it was sold as in the kickstarter - something which is a little different to many other games.

Someone of my dads age for instance (70 in a few months) is less likely to have interest in online gaming, and hell he (as in my dad I am not speaking for all 70 year olds) would not even know what facebook twitter or twitch are....... but a sequel to Elite, esp in my oculus rift...... that is a different story.

This leads on to the question...... Now Elite is funded..... should the original backers expect FD to produce the game which was hyped during the kickstarter - even if it means possibly being more of a niche title OR now FD have their money, should they now look to the future and market the game to the (possibly much larger) audience who have never played another elite game and could possibly not care less about the history behind Lave, or Thargoids and have zero interest in what was or was not said in the kickstarter but just want a good space shooter game?.

obviously I have massively simplified the issue and my post has my own bias in it....... I know what I think FD should do.

(and as ever for the record - I DO love what we have so far, but I just worry that with each update elite is going further away from the original vision sold to me in 2013 not closer to it... one way or another however time will tell).

my big hope was 1.4 would be back to the DDF, but now I know it is just CQC, which is ok and all, but it is not what I was personally looking for and by the sounds of it is not even really in the main game (from what I have read it will not even have support in solo - I really hope this is not true!!!)....... I wonder what 1.5 will bring?

Don't read the forums if they irk you so. Just a suggestication.

Instead just play this amazing computer uniververse game!! Yay!!!.... . . .

I wasn't 'saying' anything, just informing you as to why some people are annoyed that FD have decided to go back on that commitment since you seem to be unaware.

And yeah, agree with SlugwormX, the 'you lack imagination' line is weak and does seem to come from those who either can't imagine anything better or are simply trying to claim some false intellectual superiority.
Do you have a reference for this commitment to release a road-map? I don't recall that and I use a Dev post tracker, read the forums and newsletters, watched all the official FD videos and regularly read all the media interviews I can find.

So I'd really love to see where FD promised to release a road-map for ED development.

I was quoting the OP. Though I'm inclined to think that the age demographic in question is actually closer to the grave than the cradle :)
Might wanna leave that out of your thesis ;)

Oh, the OP? I skimmed. Whoops.

Didn't we have a forum poll at one point showing that quite a large percentage of forum members were a bit on the older side? I wonder if that's still true.

Well, not that they'd have got younger. You know what I mean.

Not the first time I've seen it on these fora, but the first time I've seen it used correctly. :)
If this tablet interface would let me rep, it would be +1 there for the proper but rare use of the word 'fora' ('forums' is not a word). And also +1 to Tarman for rightly calling me on said conflation.
But another poster called me 'gramps', so what do I know? ;)

Yeah, I have it on DVD. It's a bit disappointing to be honest, but still worth a watch for the nostalgia. The characters are drawn almost exactly like the originals and the story is good, but the voice actor casting is way off. But if you have kids (I don't), they'll enjoy it for sure.

Thanks, I feel just a bit more special today. :)

I've made efforts over the years of gaming and game forums to try and dismantle these types of things when possible, to get to the true heart of the matter. It doesn't solve underlying issues, but it can help prevent needless friction that is based purely on misunderstanding either someone else's points or even your own thoughts on the matter. Once the personal biases, conflations ;) , and/or bad data are filtered out then the topics at hand can get a much cleaner debate. Better to disagree clearly with reason than to agree based on confusion or bias.

Back in beta they were some nights were there were constant updates, that's some serious overtime and hard work, I'm fairly sure a lot of us don't work that hard!

Yeah? Pretty certain we do, for little recompense, elsewise we lose our 'contract' and have to find elsewhere to work. Lucky job you have where you are not working overtime just to keep it.

You forgot that there are two separate points in your statement. No-lifeing happens in every game because demographics, but it is not the same as complaints about the game's lackings. Nice conflation though.

Can I be linked to the article that compares demographics of playstyles?

I was really in trouble how to see the whole forum activity right but after this post I really am enlightened to know what's right, what's whine, cry, instant gratification and demographic area.
The "shoulds" and '"shouldn'ts" helped me the most to clear out the fog I had all along in my head about these and a big kudos for roadmapping what would happen if a roadmap was published by FD.

But would you let me cook my dinner tonight?

I think everything is quite splendid in fact I see absolutely nothing wrong at all. If I were to find something that I thought might be wrong I would probably re check my understanding of what right and wrong mean just to correct that. There's absolutely no way there could ever be a problem, I'm certain of it.

Now where did my ship go?

I blame the Dutch for all rants.

Yes, that is an odd statement. However I can prove it. The origin of the word "rant" is from the Dutch 1590-1600; Dutch "ranten"(obsolete) to talk foolishly. Therefore all rants are the fault of the Dutch! ;)

Some people still don't have their pledge rewards: And until the actual kickstarter is honoured, and Frontier does what they legally and morally should have done years ago, none of the White Knights have a right to say people can't honestly complain about the backlog of issues that have built up since.

Hmmm... maybe I'm blind. I see on the support page that they have this reward of "Free access to one of the 5 new ships when they're released". However, I can't find this reward on the Kickstarter page???
