Sarah moved from current project, update no longer coming?

It seems her posts talking about her update in detail is gone. That can be explained that update is on freeze now and won't come any time soon - so it wouldn't get interpreted as promise. Sounds like sane reason to do so.

Well you know, if the AI doesn't improve people will be asking questions as to what happened to all the work SJA put in, and then they will be quoting SJA on the things she said, it could be a circular pit of conflict, probably why some of her post have been removed.

Ok get some perspective on this:

1: The changes she was working on were obviously planned up until some point in the last week, even at Lavecon she still had the go-ahead from FDev to talk about it, so there has obviously been some kind of change in the past week as to the direction of what will be included in the next major update. Not a bad thing by any means aside from we will have to wait a little longer for that content.

2: Yes, posting her deleted tweets is going to do absolutely nothing for her aside from potentially cause serious friction between herself and FDev, so please stop with that, in-fact it would be very wise for anybody having done so to remove the image captures of them entirely from this thread. They were deleted for a reason, a knee-jerk reaction to a situation should never be disclosed in public and she has reversed that, so do the same if you posted images, you are hurting nobody but her.

3: She has not been fired, she has simply moved on to work on a different area, something which happens regularly in the development cycle.

4: She has not been "gagged" or "silenced" or anything of that nature although there is a good chance that she may well have overstepped her NDA discussing things with the community, however that is pure speculation and may have only resulted in being requested to hold-back a little on the public forums.

5: Her deleted tweets, while appearing one way (if you care to look at it like that) can also simply been seen as being ticked off by last minute changes, something that, again, quite frequently happens in development, however it is usually unlikely the public will ever hear about it as disclosing information of this nature is usually built into the NDA all devs are under working for a studio.

6: The content has not be scrapped or removed from the code-base as far as we know, it has been set aside. It is quite understandable for her to react badly to being told the content she has been working on for 2 months, no doubt with a deadline looming over her head for it, has suddenly been shelved, but that does not mean it was for nothing. The code remains, it will be implemented. There is no way 2-3 months of programmers wages are going to be thrown into the dustbin by ANY studio on earth unless the resulting code-base was either totally broken or unworkable, neither of which I would guess applied to her work.

So yes, I can understand why everybody is upset, SJA is a favourite around here for many forum users and it is due to this the rumour mill is going into overdrive, however this thread is turning a molehill into a mountain over what is most likely nothing.

Well, I hope that her work on the AI has been carried over to somebody else.
The AI improvement was the main important update I was willing to see happening!!!

The Mistress of the Minions may no longer be a presence on the forums, but at least I've got her book 'Spirit of a Witch' to look forward to when I pick it up this weekend.

While i have been keeping up with the forum, I have not been actively participating or playing the game. I was waiting for the game to develop in ways that we were promised.

This move of a talented and valued (by the community if not management) member of staff from an update members are crying out for, gives one more reason to not log in. I certainly won't be buying any further products from Frontier, just the same as with other companies who have let me down such as Egosoft, Sony, etc.

If the member of staff had been moved to something the community wants even more like Thrargoids then all well and good but the tone of the tweet and the subsequent retrospective censorship does not fit with this type of move.

NOOOOOOO!!! NOOOT HER!!!

The Mistress of Minions, The Queen of Evil AI, The Mother of Dragons, The Alpha & Omega of NPC's!!!

We'll miss you Sarah!!!

This is a sad, sad day for the Elite Dangerous Community...

We hope they allow you to come back to the Forums again! At least that!! Much more communicative and useful than many!

Best of luck in whatever new endeavor they have you doing now.

sighs....

Yeah, Elite is right up there with making Fire and the Industrial Revolution.
Elite is art , it was the first true open world 3d non point based game.
and to see them take the most talented dev off the much needed combat update is very sad I was hoping for this sins beta

I maybe stupid but I would bet they just gave up on it , no need for combat AI we need combat arenas

On the communication front who would you choose? Sarah or Zac?

I go with Sarah. I prefer truth to spin.

I'd agree with you, but we're talking about a video game, not NATOs plans for deploying cruise missiles in Eastern Europe. I know the games industry these days like to keep things very close to their chest and keep everything quiet as if they're working for the defense department, but that's unnecessary and frankly rather condescending of them. They (Frontier) can talk to us about ideas they have for the game, and frankly it'd be better if they did this - we wouldn't end up with (sorry FDev) complete crap like Powerplay or SCBs otherwise.

...

Like any company they can have any policy they want. Just because they have the right to do so doesn't mean they're right to do so.

True, it's not right to destroy work based on a (probably minor) communications breach, but we also don't know that it IS this or anything else remotely like it. It could well be totally benign sideways reassignments within FD that upset SJA and made her post in anger or frustration. I can't say I would be happy if my latest project was taken out of my hands and I'm sure SJA was even more attached than I can get. Nobody's immune to such things, and don't for a minute think I'm saying "well SJA just lost it" or trying to shift blame to her in any way. I absolutely am not, I'm simply saying we can speculate all day long and still literally know nothing about the circumstances. I HOPE the facts will come out, but I also don't think holding one's breath is going to be a good idea if we're waiting for it.

And on video game contracts - the last contract I had to sign (which was for print media work) weighed at more than SIXTY pages. Lawyers are insane these days, and big corporate lawyers and enforcement teams are the most insane of all. It wouldn't surprise me if the colour of text in forum posts was dictated in employee contracts these days.

So its ok to get upset over sports or something like that?

No, it isn't. They are both forms of entertainment. Entertainment is absolutely the last thing in this world to get upset about.

We don't know what's going on so this thread is just rampant speculation.

I recall a post of hers regarding her inability to beat a pair of Elite AI Vultures in a combat-spec Annie. Perhaps an investor in FD saw that post? You know what that statement is? In the software world that can be construed as a statement of fitness for purpose, i.e. a promise of a feature. That could have gotten the company in legal hot water with an investment firm's lawyers, perhaps? I don't know. You don't know. Only Sarah and her boss knows.

All we can do is this:

Sarah, sorry to hear about the trouble. Hope everything is well, and we can enjoy your AI minions in the future. Good luck with your new secret Project X! :)

Irrespective of who said what, what's gone on etc. etc. I find it rather telling that so many (self included) are prepared to assume the worse from Frontier. Following this game has sort of been like the 'death of a thousand cuts'. Such promise from the combat alpha, followed by 'p2p multiplayer's-a-bit-wonky-gate', 'offline gate', 'vertical-slice-gate', 'lack-of-comms-gate', 'PowerPlay! The-feature-no-one-asked-for-gate', 'Xbox-gate', 'CQC! The-second-feature-no-one-asked-for-gate', 'Drew-leaving-gate' and now this.
.
[Speculation mode on again] It could have just been someone politely taking a developer aside and saying 'we're really sorry, we know you want your features X in, but we really need this other thing fixing, so what you've done will have to wait', they then publically blow-off steam, later regret it, and we now are where we are. But the fact remains we're (almost) all prepared to think the worst, and that now strikes me as somewhat unhealthy... :(

This was work to enable more dynamic and engaging AI in a game which severely lacks content.

FD have decided to pull the plug on this content.

You've just used the word "sane" in that context.

SJA said her AI improvement will be implemented at some point in the futire, so look on the bright side people, better that than left on the cutting room floor :p
