Sarah moved from current project, update no longer coming?

I wanted Tougher AI.... They are too easy, even in a c-rated cobra.

But her plans were making the Deadly and Elite's much tougher as they should be, and making the harmless/mostly harmless easier, so it was all a balancing act, and not making harder for newBs, but actually easier.

When I play the AI seems plenty tough enough as I am not so skilled.

Perhaps quick fix for the skilled among you:
Use only fixed weapons then get really really drunk before you play, plug in an atari 800 joystick and set the resolution to 800 by 600.
That should make it harder.

What I do not like about those tweets - posting job issues can kill your carrier easily at FD and in any other company...

Sure maybe there is an over reaction here, however there are somethings going on that I find strange.

1. The "angry" tweet (if you are in a professional business, you know that sometimes you have to do other tasks that you don't necessary agree with or like doing. This doesn't make you post tweets, with emotional content)
2. Some of her posts was deleted (that is really weird, as there was nothing that indicated anything wrong, other than she mentioned the upcoming upgrade of the AI, (maybe that was the mistake))

I was really looking forward to meet some true deadly AI's now we get the same lame AI none cares about.

I have posted stuff on forums and email when "seeing red". I deliberately do not use twitter or facebook partly for that reason, so I do not think it is that strange that someone may do it when frustrated about having to mothball - even temporarily - somthing they are invested in.

As for the posts, again could be quite innocently that she did not want miss information out there, which is exactly what the promised AI update for 1.4 has now become..... The last thing any of FD would want is tons of posts at 1.4 saying "but she promised "this", and all we got was "that""

This is why we don't talk about work in public forums - its too easy for discussions to get out of hand particularly when only a fraction of the information is public.

I had my own work put on hold at the start of the week - increase the risk on something that is going well to 'fix' something that seems to be going off plan (in my case). 2 different projects, threads aligned on different deadlines, different commercial impact resulting from predictions of progress.

The more competent developers (particularly in larger organisations where there is more flexibility in the planning) are always at risk of diversion due to illness, failing plans or requirements changes - comes with the territory.
Could you please explain to me again, how you came to the conclusion that "not talking to your customers" is key, because of the out-of-hand-discussions that will occur due to you "not talking to your customers"?

ok so it took Fdev over ONE YEAR to react on the laughable AI which should have been challenging FROM THE BEGINNING. They assigned ONE PERSON to the job. The person did a good job and was even good in customer relation.

And now they reassign this ONE PERSON to another task? Are gone totally NUTS?

I know how bad Fdev is in PR respect, but this is so low ball even for them lol

I think he was talking about business in general. Certainly I, and many in the IT business, have very specific corporate guidelines about how you present yourself and your opinions in a work sense. I appreciate game development in this day and age is expected to be a bit more 'social', because that's the buzzword of the Teenies... but it's a bit of a balancing act...

What happens when you don't inform your community properly?

This thread happens.

This is so true.
I do realize that there are projects, which have to be done. Sarah is an employee like everybody else and has to do what needs to be done. The issue here is that she was the only one really interacting with the community and apparently that is gone now.

FD has to realize that the community hates being teased with secrets. "Uhh something awesome is coming. Everybody will love it. Just wait till SOON " Things like this only get expectations high and then disappoint, even if it actually would have been something nice. What the community wants is interaction. Talk to us. Tell us what you're doing. Not in detail, just make us feel like you're working on something nice. I'm not trying to imply you aren't working, but what Sarah did was perfect. Nobody here (to my knowledge) would ever question that she was working on content for US, for the community, not working on some weird stuff behind the scenes nobody wants or cares about, simply because she told us about it.

That's just my personal opinion though. Maybe I'm completely wrong and everybody loves the way it is done. Doesn't seem like it though.

Blimey, that was a long read... What a bunch of drama queens we have on the forums occasionally a reasonable post crops up but not often.

It seems a lot of you don't know how a company works or think you have a right to know what is going on just because you bought a game, well you don't nor do FD have any obligation to explain themselves to you.

What I saw was a person tweating about a change in role. Any person who's role in a job is changed would be a bit miffed but to then post about it on social media... Maybe she should have re-read her contract first. I know for certain that the devlopers we have under contract are not allowed to talk about their work outside of the employee pool and certainly not on social media but this is just speculation as non of us know ANYTHING of the truth in this matter.

When millions of dollars of investors money is at stake to produce a AAA product you put these clauses in contracts to protect your ROI (Return On Investment), if you don't then your not going to last very long in the world of business.

The reaction to this is so similar to the posts I see about the design document. People see something that wasn't in it but has appeared in the game and they go mental demanding to know how this has happened and a following of ranters joins in - Again, you are not share holders, you are customers.

Just because you all saw a list of things to be included in the game does not mean that they will be the only things added to the game.

But well done for showing that forums are just as mental today as they were back in the early days of wow.

There is an AI team of which SJA is a part. All discussions with her, she has been very forthcoming about the fact that there are a group of them that work on AI....

He is talking from a developers perspective and he is right. It does not do a community any good when it gets informed about development by someone who is not responsible for the content of a release or who isn't managing things. If you state that in the next update AI will be better, than you have things to explain when your authority deems it necessary to shift things. Of course it is not good to not communicate at all, but when you do, you have to use the proper channels. If not, things go rogue.

^THIS

I start to wonder if PR and communication is by default a non excitant skill in software development companies, or should I say game development companies? I mean CIG (SC) is terrible at communication, and foot in mouth is more common than good communication.

Always chuckle at these sorts of posts.

Ok, we all bow down in appreciation of your awesome skills. I got my rear end handed to me today by a NPC Python in an maxed out A rated Clipper. (ill admit, it was with morning coffee, so i wasn't working at 100%)

I too support the People's Princess!

Oh wait... wrong thread...

Yup, we need Ed or Zac to come in a tell us that SJA's work on AI won't be wasted and, if possible, confirm that she is still working on some aspect of the game that they just can't tell us about yet. (Hired NPC wingmen! Escort missions!) Or SJA can tell us herself, but I'm guessing that everything she writes will need to be vetted for a while. :)
