It would be really cool if FD would have a chat with us...

I would like something beyond the news letters. I think it would be really cool if FD would post something that shared with us:

  • Thoughts of theirs regarding the direction of the game.
  • Thier observations and understanding of player behavior.
  • What they want out of the game for themselves since they said they are making them game they want to play.
  • How they feel about the trending topics on the forums.
  • Things that can be done and cannot be done, development wise, based on the budget of the game.
  • How they feel overall about where the game is at right now in terms of what they want to accomplish.

I have no idea why they cannot just be more frank with us and share the above information.

Because it would quickly break down into a "PowerlessPlay is completely broken, you need to fix it" endless debate.

If you look around, and actually give FD credit for what they do say around here, you'd find that they are quite involved with these forums, and are active in communicating. They aren't going to interact like this is a board room or something. Read what they have to say, and put the pieces together.

If you want devs to answer questions and fully be open on the development side of things.

Change games Star Citizen does pretty much all of this.

Every game developer is different.

Plus this dev team is starting to answer questions already, so they are working on that side of things.

Sometimes they're helpful, but rarely as much as I'd like. I remain a fan of FD tech support, though.

The problem is, it's a lose-lose situation for them. If they hop on the forums and communicate future plans/ideas, then people are going to get ticked if they don't deliver on it. Just look at how much Sarah communicated with everyone about upcoming AI changes, and now everyone is flipping out because she's been reassigned and her changes have gotten pushed back. We don't know the slightest bit about their reasoning for doing so, but it doesn't matter, people have grabbed their pitchforks because they were given the impression AI changes were on the way, and now they're not. That's a prime example of how communication can backfire.

Aside from that, I don't blame them one bit for being hesitant to respond to forum posts, not only is it a waste of time that's better spent making actual progress on the game...it also increases everyone's level of expectation every time they say "yep, that's on the road map, we're planning to implement that"...which in turn leaves even more room for disappointment when a year later it hasn't happened yet. If people around here were more patient and understanding of what goes into game development and satisfying a huge group of gamers with varying tastes, then maybe we would hear from them more.

I think a lot of our questions might not have answers yet.

If you look at most of their responses, they seem to indicate that a whole lot of the specifics are still wrapped up in design - if they're still deciding how they want to move forward, they really aren't going to want to say much of anything about what they plan to do, because we're going to jump on the tiniest details of the response like starving dogs.

I think that it'd be really nice to hear their thoughts about what they consider successful pieces of design and why, and what they consider less successful and why though, as that would help us understand what to expect going forward.

But I also see how a lot of folks would take even that kind of information way out of context - look at the dialogue about graphics quality for some examples. They tried to be straight forward and responsive and give honest answers and the community response was basically to call them all liars and demand real answers.

So, overall, I think they had some rough times and they're getting better about keeping the community in the loop, such as it is, but I think it's going to take awhile before they'll be able to adjust our perceptions about how much they are or aren't talking to us.

All you gotta do is read the forum for 20 minutes and realize that not being heavily involved in the forum is the best decision at this time. 3-5 years from now when the game has actually settled into the long haul then maybe it will be ok to converse with the public. Right now ? No. The userbase is not ready because they dont have the whole game to make educated conversation about the state of the game outside of basic observations and you dont need developers involved to handle that. The players who are not willing to adapt to the game FD has envisioned need to exit the discussion before any decent interaction should take place or you just get a lot of pointless noise.

They put out a lot more of that stuff than you give them credit for. Sandro answered a ton of questions recently. There have been a great deal of red icons on the forums showing Dev participation. It's out there.

It's been mentioned a number of times that any group of developers have to manage customer expectations. Just look at how the debates and complaints are carried out on these forums. The only way FD keep from hanging themselves is with utter silence, or enthusiastic acceptance, the mob can stand nothing else. I wouldn't talk to us if I was in their place.

You mean something like this http://eft.recoil.org/? FD devs have responded 20 or so times in 24 hours. They kinda communicate - a lot.

No, they won't tell specifics, because they really don't know themselves sometimes.

You really must understand that perception and what's going on is verry different things when communicating with devs. People to tend ignore all kind of information they have, most visible in case of PP

Probably gonna merge with Star Citizen and see some actual progress in game at last.. lol

You mean in SC right?
