I just gave this a good testing against some A.I. in a RES. Leaving the game with my Sidewinder at 5% hull, I returned, and I was not dead. Not only was I not dead, but my ship was at 100% health, all 5 times.
I have found some pretty bizarre behavior to develop inside a big starport IF you leave your game running with your ship sitting on the pad ON THE SURFACE of the station flight deck.
Today for example, I got called out on a personal emergency and left my game running unattended for nearly 7 hours! My ship was safely parked on the pad of Finney Dock in Eleu.
When I returned to the game, the frame rates had been reduced to a literal slide show speed! It had to be in the low single digits! Before I quit the game and rebooted, I took a few moments with HeadLook and started looking around. I started noticing that there was pieces of blown up ships everywhere! I had already discovered that sitting at a port for more than about 20 minutes would start triggering a series of ship destructions at the hands of the automated station security system.
Well... Apparently, when left alone for many hours, this ship destruction becomes so constant, and the debris so thick, that the game slows to a crawl possibly while attempting to render all the pieces? I saved and quit, rebooted the game, and everything was back to normal.
But... This definitely helped to confirm what I had long suspected. That the station based NPC ship destruction does increase with sustained inactivity while docked at a large starport, but also that the game appears to have a significant "Memory Leak".
