what do you miss from the Original Elite?

for me its the following...

-being able to buy a unit that lets you see commodity prices on entering a star system without having to dock first! This would allow you to check prices when on route while passing through systems so you could ad hoc trade for a byter profit. Surely in this advanced universe it wouldnt be unrealistic to assume that you could get pricing information without having to physically dock!??

-Thargoids. At least you didnt have to scan to know that when you met this lot you either fought or ran. In fact rather than powerplay it would have been good if a side line for everyone would be to stop the spread of a dangerous threat in the universe. Something we all had a common goal to do. Missions could involve say taking down a base ship or something for a huge reward and status and in the process stike a victory for humanity.

- being able to upgrade ship manoeuvrability. As far as i can rememeber you used to be able to buy upgrades to make your Cobra out-turn the smaller ships. Whats the point in upgrading your weapons or your ship when a sidewinder can just run circles round you? It would be good to be able to 'soup' up any ship. That way when you fight another ship youve encountered you never know its capabilities until you start fighting them.

-instant docking. The current docking computer is painfully slow-its just an excuse to go and make a cup of tea. With the original Elite you could enter a system, hit the docking computer and instantly you were docked! Yes i know it may not be 'realistic' but Im over the stage of wanting to experience every part of the landing process.

-unlimited expansion. You used to be able to upgrade your cargo space by using compression(albeit at an exponential cost). Now you are limited by the number of slots you have in your ship. So if you now want to transport more goods you have to buy a bigger ships at the cost of being able to use your ship to fight. You should be able to do everything (fight, trade, explore) with one ship if you want to rather than having to have to keep changing them. At least give us the ability to have one of our docked ships 'delivered' to where we are currently at. Again maybe its not 'realistic' but this is sci-fi ,anything is possible!

-stealing ships. In the original Elite you used to be able to wear down a ship to the point of getting the pilot to eject, capture him/her in your cargo and then steal their ship which you could then sell or keep. This would open up the idea of missions where you could be paid more to bring someone in alive

-picking up canisters in space. Why now is everything you pick up considered stolen? Previously in Elite you found something you could safely dock at any station and sell it. Surely if you come across something in the depths of space you should be able to pick it up and sell without getting an instant fine if you were scanned by a police ship.

i'm sorry to say I'm fast getting bored with Elite dangerous and just feel some of the original features would have kept my interest a bit longer.:( For me the most perfect game would have been to take the exact gameplay of the original Elite, add the better graphics and multiplayer aspect and then expand the game from there.

what does anyone else think?

The only thing I remember from that list is Thargoids.

Stock market prices could be bought (you pay for them) in system in FE2, but it wasn't a module IIRC. I don't think stealing ships was in any Elite game.

However, there are ships from the original, arc Elite and FE2/FFE that are missing still (Krait, Boa, shuttles, Imp Explorer, Perez Corp ships, the Arc-Elite ones which may not be possible).

One thing I would like are the features that were rumoured from Elite and not in. Namely Space Dredgers and Generation ships.

Realistic consequences to being a criminal - the Fugitive status. Being denied docking in most civilized areas and being hounded by the police/the Navy constantly.

Not true. Maybe in some weird version where they cut corners? At least on C64, I am quite sure it played the Blue Danube and docked you as you watched. Couldn't activate it until you were very close to the station.

Ah, yes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltsqeUbPuEM docking starts at 10:28

The only thing I miss is the friendly atmosphere from back then, that the Internet has eroded away...

It's the anonymity. I assure you, take that away and make people accountable for their actions, and they'll be much better behaved.

This is a fair summation, but I'm still happy with ED. I think the 'Frontier' release was the best starting model to go from.
OP is wrong about the docking computer .. at least now ... it's been improved dramatically and only takes a short time to do it's job.

Am missing automatic pilot feature in SC. It would still hand over to you for interdictions (warning/read alert siren required) , but for the 100K+ SC's it would be great for you to target station and then go off to make a brew and come back to a nicely docked ship.
Wireless headset anyone?

I miss some flavor stuff.

- System/Planet description. Yea they where random generated still where quite fun and added lots to the universe. Now it's hard to even find a System with any description. Would be even satisfied if it would only contain the main production hub type. Like 'This is a Industrial center with some mining' or such.

- From Elite2 i miss the more detailed Criminal record. Would love a list of all your infractions. Original also only tracked active crimes but would be nice if they kept a permanent record. Would be nice to see how often i forgot to ask for a landing, or how often someone killed pilots. As said even if there isn't any bounty on them anymore. Permanent criminal record would be so neat.

Hmm, yes your right bartmoss. My mistake - now that I watched your video it did take a while to dock in the original Elite. And were the graphics really that bad back then??? lol, shows how far we've come!

You could activate the DC right away after you jumped in new system. It just took some time to get to the station and dock... ;)

It is quite shocking how poor human memory can be isn't it?
I have been caught out many times believing something I remember incorrectly :p

Yes it does indeed!

That's why I never trust my own memory if I don't have to :D

How true! I wonder if some of the other stuff in my original post was actually in the original Elite, were bits from other games (maybe ED2 or Privateer) or just wishful thinking!! In anycase, I do think some of the things I mentioned would make it more fun (for me anyway!)

I miss nothing from the original Elite that hasn't been brought over to ED and updated.

Elite (84) was ground breaking back then (notice past tense) as nothing had been released before like it.

However people (IMO) need to let go of the past because if you look at Elite with 2015 eyes it's shockingly bad.

We had the Internet in '84? (I do miss the atmosphere of the pre-Alpha and Alpha days, even if I did mostly just lurk back then).
.
My main memory of '84 Elite was loving getting right behind Pythons and following them as they bimbled along, helpless before my lasers. I try that with a python nowadays... :(
.
Oh, and Trumbles. Or docking and getting a red screen with 'Your ship has been boarded by space pirates. They show no mercy!' on the Spectrum. Imagine the cries of 'INSTA-DEATH! Poor Game Design!' nowadays. :D

It was possible to actually die in the original Elite, and in FE2 and FFE - you got the spinning tombstone, which meant progress was meaningful.
I stlll play the original Elite on an emulator but I don't think there is a good way of comparing ED with Elite when it comes to features. They are different games. Possibly the main difference for me is that Elite was about the challenge of surviving, it was a wonderful blood pumping game that you had to be completely involved in. ED is about enjoying eye candy and relaxing, even in combat.

Without Ironman being implemented in ED this isn't possible any more as ED is a MP game.

The closest you can get is self imposed IM and that takes courage.

(Commander #12 btw ... Going to fire her up again today and try to get some credits :))
