Erased from Open Play at CUBEO

I consider myself an average, casual player. I liked the idea of interacting with real people. Sounded like fun. So, I've been playing in open play for over a month now, but no longer...

It all started when I was hanging around the Nav Marker in the Cubeo system in my fully outfitted Asp collecting bounties on NPCs. When I mistakenly fired on an NPC who I was trying to scan. This, of course gave me an immediate WANTED title. So for the galactic equivalent of a "fender bender", I'm WANTED.

So, I head for the station to buy a Sidewinder and clear my name. But before I can get to the station, I'm interdicted by a player in Fer de Lance. Now, I get interdicted all the time by NPCs and can almost always get out of it if I want to. But with this player interdiction, there was no escape. It did not mater where the escape vector was. My bar went down, and his went up unless mine was dead center.

After being pulled out of supercruise, I made a pass on him with my class 2 beam lasers and 4, class 1 multi-canons. I immediately realized that I was out of my league. So, I ran. I made it into supercruise with about 30% hull. I got my bearings and headed for the station to get repaired...Only to be immediately interdicted by the same Fer de Lance who proceeded to finish the job. No communication. I was freaking out and couldn't figure out how to text him anyway. So, blown to bits, I was.

All for a 400 credit bounty.

Okay, I have insurance. Cash flow hasn't been so great lately, so I had to take the loan. 800,000 credits or start over; not much of a choice there.

Time to play it safe and do some simple trade runs and get my cash back up and pay off the loan.

I made two runs.

But guess what. I was interdicted by a player wing in the same spot. Pirates, I suppose. This ended nearly the same as the encounter with the Fer de Lance. I had no way of escape. No communication. When I realized that I was about to die, I pulled my Asp to a complete stop and just sat there. They knocked me down to 1% hull, circled me a couple of times. Then, unceremoniously and figuratively put their weapon to my head and pulled the trigger.

All for 88 tones of food cubes.

--

Now, I'm in a Sidewinder, at the butt-end of inhabited space with my 1000 credits in a private game.

I'm not posting this to whine. I knew the risks. But I'm playing to have fun. Having my entire Elite career reduced to smoldering ruins in the coarse of 30 minutes is not my idea of fun.

My point for this post is basically to say that this type of play will drive most players from open play and these "career" players will be left to fight amongst themselves. And wont that be fun...for them.

You had the misfortune to find a wing of pirates...who don't get the idea that pirating dosn't mean "kill everything". Unfortunately, that's the breaks out here in the black...

The attack on your Asp while trading may have been escapable if you'd dumped cargo and run. If they really were pirates, they'd probably have stopped to grab cargo while you made your getaway...if they were just PK psychos though, you were screwed either way.

No .. the OP had the misfortune to find a wing of murderers. Pirates take your goods, not your life.

Murderers are welcomed to the game, it's just that sadly every player I have met who interdicted me was one .. ;)

You mean you don't know how to use the in-game chat? Well that's the problem right there. If you get interdicted by a player, and you're not looking for a fight, then run asap. Don't try to make a pass or whatever. Because if you run after attacking, chances are you're going to get killed if the other guy catches you.

So the proper (pirate) procedure is:
1. Idenfity the target while being interdicted.
2. Enemy ship is better than yours? Then run if the interdiction was successful.
3. If he's catching up on you, send a txt message and ask what he wants.
4. If your shield goes out tell him you surrender.

As for the bounty on your head, that's just bad luck. Leave the system for a week, as other players will have to scan you first before they can see you're wanted.

Many many disgusting people out in open, once you know how to utilize a mix of fighting/evading and switching game modes you are "allowed" to have fun in open.
Before that you either have to play Ironman and risk loosing everything all the time or do the boring thing and keep away from all and every hotspots.

Trade rares in Lave? As soon as you encounter pirates evade the wing of 4 hiiiighly trained psychos who need a confident boost by squishing Solo ships. Then > Solo. Buy rares, back to open.
Blackade at a CG with no reason what so ever, wings of 4 again? So-So-So-Solo! Don't want to be alone anyway? Friendslist is always happy to open a group.

The game offers all the tools to have fun completely ignoring all the wishes and needs of the murder for fun crowd, they are completle powerless in ED. (Guess why they hate those options so much..)

*btw if you want to get back on your feet or some help/tricks pm and I'll give you my CMDR name. :p

OP, some advices:

Chat. Just press ENTER and type away, how hard is that?

Interdicted. I fly FdL myself and I can tell you that right after interdiction it gets thrown around like crazy, it's very hard to move to the interdicted ship right away.

So after the interdiction assign full power to engines and boost as hard as you can. Even if you don't manage to get out of enemy's weapon range the damage will be very weak due to distance, especially if you are moving around and deploying chaff.

Once you've returned to supercruise simply quit the game to main menu. It's perfectly legal, and you'll be safe immediately. You can then switch to solo and continue if you wish.

Oh come on OP, your being defeatist. You play in open because you like the idea of interaction with other players...you also know what the internet is like, so it is not inconceivable you are going to have some nasty experiences at the hands of other players. This should just make you a better pilot and think more about what ship you take, how you outfit it and what career path you follow.

By running to a private game or solo you are just hiding from the big scary game, you will never improve fighting NPC's.

I have lost count of the number of times my ship has been reduced to scrap, the most painful of which was losing 17 million credits worth of exploration Asp as I lost shields and powered full throttle into an asteroid in an almost pitch black resource site lol. The kicker was I didn't have enough insurance so I got to start in a shiny new Sidewinder at my original station with 1000 credits.

I didn't give up, it just made me more determined to succeed and ensure I always have insurance .

Learn to escape it only takes 15 seconds :

1 Submit to the interdiction (your cooldown is faster)
2 Pips to engines, throttle up, do not deploy weapons
3 Select the furthest away system you can jump to (high wake jump not affected by masslock 15 second charge)
4 Boost whilst evading in the general direction of the escape system
5 Once you've jumped emergency drop to normal space select another system and jump again, they will probably not work out where you are.
6 Repeat if necessary

Always cover insurance :

1 Check before you launch, every time you launch
2 Sell modules to cover insurance if necessary, a downgrade is better than a total loss
3 Trade your ship for a cheaper one, again better than a total loss
4 Don't buy cargo that puts you over the limit, less profit is better than a total loss

Friendly fire :

1 Check your targets
2 Don't shoot the space police
3 If you have poor target perception, practice escaping you'll need to do it repeatedly

Welcome to Elite: Dangerous Open Frag Fest. It's just the nature of anything goes, no consequences and anonymity.

Give the Mobius PvE group (PvP allowed in conflict zones) a go? More than 10.500 commanders surely can't be wrong?

Fly safe

Easy to say after the event I know; but you obviously understood the importance of insurance, so why didn't you downgrade your equipment and/or ship to ensure you had the credits to cover insurance?

Good advice here OP...piloting skills are what you need first and foremost, not necessarily combat skills...you can learn to fight in ships specifically configured for the job but If trading is your game configure your ship for speed and evasion.

Once you have submitted to interdiction put full power to engines and run. If it is a fairly big ship interdicting you, ASP and upwards (not including the Imperial Clipper) then turn and run full pelt towards it. This might seem like suicide and yes you will take a few hits but once you pass the enemy ship it will have to lose speed in order to turn giving you valuable running space...this works best vs Anaconda's and Python's.

I have been in solo since the start of my game; however for the last few days I have been out in open play and based in Cuebo. Not met many commanders there to be honest, spent most of yesterday in systems close to Cuebo, as Cuebo does not offer any real missions unless Elite. I think after about 4 hours, I saw less than 5 real players. I also had an commander flown FDL try to pull me out of SC, but I was not playing, so didn't submit. Not sure if that was in Cuebo, I think it was HIP 1914.

Yes, there are things OP could have done differently. Jump to a new system, not fought the FdL, submit to interdiction, etc. etc. etc.

But the crime/punishment as currently implemented enables this sort of thing, because the police response to crime is weak, and you can escape them by jumping a very short distance. IMO Open has much more potential for fun than playing solo, but letting players easily gank others without consequence can and will drive people away.

I always play in open, after returning from a month of exploring I have been content shooting the NPC opponents in the PP systems to get back into combat mode. Then I made the mistake of interdicting an opposing player....I went into panic mode and forgot how to fly my Asp  , after a couple of runs against the imperial clipper I saw I was unable to out turn him as his lasers were stripping my shields....I missed using my shield cell as I cycled past the option to drop a heatsink  ....without shields I did my Brave sir Robin and started to run, but that clipper is fast. I went into silent mode and hoped to drop off his radar..in the Asp I spent £2 on the store to paint white that very night :D . I watched space drifting past quietly as I sucked down about 20 seconds worth of the 25 minutes of air in my top of the line emergency air...the clippers lasers were intermittent now, but deadly enough to make me go pop and hand me an 850k insurance payment. A reminder that NPC hunting never prepares you for the psychological hit of player combat...but those moments are far more memorable. To the commander who watched the white Asp explode without dignity.....thanks for the memory

P.S. I read up on the clipper (really impressive ship), and now know it's flight and arnament characteristics. ;)

OP theres some tough breaks and I'm sorry your back in a Sidewinder. But o urge you to stock with open and consider them some hard lessons learnt. No offence but it sounds like your inexperience with other player cmdrs killed you.

Firstly you get interdicted by a player FDL while your in an Asp with a bounty on your head. Run! Run as fast as you can hitting any chaff or scbs you have and high wake to the furthest system on your navigation panel.

Secondly after the first rebuy you went out without enough for insurance? Sorry but you should have sold some modules and/or bought a cheaper craft to make up some cash. I lost a clipper shortly after buying it to low down dirty rammers in George Lucas (even that I believe was partly my own fault) I didn't have the insurance so I sold the FSD drive and got a Cobra. It was ultimately a good thing because I hadn't really enjoyed my first time with a Cobra but now that beauty is in a hangar with a custom paint job never to be sold!

Thirdly, Ok difficult to avoid death in that situation and once you were interdicted yeah I reckon you were a gonna. But you have to treat all players with suspicion. You enter a system, check the comms tab, any player cmdrs will show up and it'll even tell you what they fly. You see 4 scary ships, red alert, locate one face and scan, if they're in a wing, personally I'd jump straight out of the system. Otherwise keep a careful eye on the radar if they start moving in on your six make evasive manoeuvres in super cruise and get straight out of there.

The thing it's a dark galaxy in open and there are killers who just want so see ships burn on the end of their lasers and that for me makes it ten times as fun as solo even though I don't really like to fight.

I feel for you.

The lesson to take is don't fly with all your assets in one place. Have some insurance, either in the form of a big bank balance or in the form of another ship in dock somewhere.

Luckily I have a T9 money printing press locked away safely in a station if I ever get done over like you did

Isn't this just another "I had no insurance" post really? As much as I feel for you there were so many things you could have done differently and possibly still been playing. Can't overly blame it on Open as much as your own inexperience. It will get easier.

P.S. I read up on the clipper (really impressive ship), and now know it's flight and arnament characteristics. ;)

I recently got a clipper it's a really nice ship, and the ability to either chase down anyone in the game or pull a Sir Robin manouvre is great.

They are being sold cheap 18.5 mil at Kamito and you only need the empire rank of serf (these are both temporary special offers).
