The wow moments

Disclaimer: The wow in the title refers to emotion of awe, of surprise, of a sense of accomplishment, not 'that game that will not be mentioned'

I distinctly remember two wow moments. The first was my first day in the game. I was sitting in the cockpit of my brand new and free Sidewinder, trying to work out what the hell I was supposed to be doing. Saw the button for 'Galaxy Map' so being curious I clicked on in. Damn I though, lots of stars around. Then I worked out I could scroll out with the mouse wheel. So I did, then I did some more, then I did a lot more until I could see everything. That is when I realised just how big this game is. I just sat their smiling for a few minutes, overawed in the entire scope of the well everything.

The second was a while later. I had graduated up to a Cobra (my Sidewinder is still parked somewhere a long way away) from a Hauler. I had done a heap of trading, hadn't traveled too far and avoided any fighting. But with this new Cobra I felt ready so off to the nearest USS. Found some wanted NPCs and lo and behold, killed them. I felt invincible :D After a few days I was cruising around a and got interdicted by an Anaconda. Got mass locked so I decided to fight back. I weaved, I dodged, I targeted the Power Plant, I took damage, I inflicted damage. But in the end I won, the mighty Anaconda blew up right in front of me. Massive bounty (well it seemed so back then and truth be told, I don't remember it even having a shield so probably a novice loL). I sat there and yelled, pumping my fists in the air. It felt such a momentous victory to me back then, up to that stage I had though the bigger ships like the Anaconda and Python were practicably indestructible for someone in a Cobra. Not any more lol

So has anyone else had moments like that? Ones that even now after hundreds of hours you occasionally look back on and smile?

I think the moment when you realise how big the galaxy is...as you say that scroll of the mouse wheel and the zooming out revelation is something that will never be forgotten...I wonder if any future releases will match this? Maybe planetary landings and the first time you enter into an atmosphere and tackle the difficulty of wind speed and gravity...

I remember once investigating a Strong Signal Source, and to my surprise, was greeted by a fleet of Federal Navy Ships. I quickly saluted and went on my merry way.

I also love it when an anaconda with a huge bounty sits next to a nav beacon for a while, and the Federal Security Service jumps in and an epic, raging fight ensues. Needless to say, that pirate had likely seen better days. :)

Taking out my 1st Clipper. At the start of my time here, It was 'the ship' to grind for and meant to be something special. After getting by Cobra and having my rear handed to me a couple of times, by Clippers, I was determined to take one down. 1st time I did, with my hull down to something like 20%, I just sat there for a moment and yes! WOW! Now I see a clipper and just 'want it' to be a viable target, just to get the beams blazing, as they non longer offer me that noobie fear of them.

Taking out my 1st Clipper.[...]

Yes that just comes with the know how of the pilot and I know exactly what you mean.
I was shocked to see that the clippers had MC turrets and could fire backwards. I was very troubled. :D

Of course now seeing an Anaconda gives me a big grin instead of a horrific squee, it's such a juicy target.

Flying very close over the rings of a gas giant in supercruise for the first time. Seeing a supergiant star and 'A','O' and 'B' stars for the first time. Watching L-beams glitter off Tannhauser Gate for the first time. (Yes, that last one was an in-game thing) ;)

Wait till SJA gets her way with the AI pilots. That will get you your squee back..

My stand out moment was just seeing the beauty of the galaxy that ED has realised in this game.

She's been pulled off the AI now and the said update isn't coming.

But she may be back on the AI later, and it may coming, just later than expected, according to subsequent Twitter posts. Back on topic, messing around with a Coriolis Station for the first time. Seeing how great a terraformed Mars looked, dogfighting for the first time in the combat Alpha, The 'Incursion' mission. Shield hit and spark effects. Watching five Federal Battle Cruisers 'mate' - quite a few wow moments actually, even if some were unintentional. :)

I get wow moments still, after almost a year of play, from even mundane routes through inhabited systems. my favorite is approaching a station where I can see the dark side of an inhabited planet, with city lights showing, but you can see the edge of dawn on one side of the planet, and the sun and the station are both in field of view. Just beautiful.

First time i saw a capital ship jumping in. Every new ships engine sound.
The realisation how big the ED universe is. The first time experiencing the Asp's firepower after flying smaller vessels before.
And literally a constant wow factor about how beautiful this game is, whilst not being scripted. And lately, how much more fun and adventure i have since i changed completely to open play after getting a bit bored after a few hundred hours in group and solo play.

I was an alpha backer, so we got things in dribs and drabs. So the very first alpha was a wow moment, even though we had seen FD videos. Actually sitting there in the cockpit and flying this long-awaited game was worthy of a wow. The next biggie was the very first time I flew through the letterbox into a spaceport. That was, sort of, a flight into the unknown. FD had published drawings in earlier newsletters, but no videos. My final wow was the first (and only) time I flew with a VR headset (at a con). I am still somewhat surprised I have not rushed out to buy one.

Thanks to all those who have shared their wow moments, this game does have some special times doesn't it :D

My first time I went "WOW thats is awesome" was when I jumped into the gas giant asteroid belt.
Second wow was when I accidentally boosted my noob ship into the station.

Still wowed by the viscerality of the ship cockpit experience, especially in relation to audio. You can know what your ship is doing on so many levels just by listening. That part of the game where I'm actually flying still impresses me.

I remember seeing, for the first time, the immense distances within a single star system, and seeing the smallness of a destination planet in comparison to those distances. And being so immersed that I realized I would be totally lost without orbit lines or other navigation aids.

And arriving, at the end of a hyperjump, through the corona of the target star's binary twin.

But you can get these moment vicariously too. Even yesterday, I watched drkaii's video here and was moved to make post #2. These things affect you at surprising moments.

Coming through the toaster the first time into one of the big stations. Dropping out of SC by an outpost, requesting to dock and then making a final approach; the music and ambience of the moment evoke a rich feeling that I have come home.

My first real wow moment was in a CZ somewhere

Selected the faction I wanted to fight for, seeing 1/2 the scanner turn red.... then "Capital ship detected" and watched it emerge from hyperspace and take out nearly everything red in about 30 seconds.

Bill

Come on FD we need a major war between powers, not piddly little skirmishes and minor faction stuff

The next time I'll be "wowed" again is when I get to experience the game with the oculus rift. Can't wait for the release :)
