where are the simple answers?

Trying to get answers to some basic questions seems to be difficult so I 'll start a new thread by quoting what I said in a different thread in early July:" Before PP the fighting was only with Wanted ships and I was getting bounties for rewards. Now I have run into Lawless, Hostile, Enemy and Wanted ships and no rewards at all for shooting down any of them except Wanted ships! Because all I get to do is spend credits to repair my ship or reload the munitions I will now run away as fast as I can until I understand who is worth fighting and who is not! Actually I was exploring when PP came on and now I am back in the middle of nowhere until the mud settles down. To add to the confusion just before I went back to exploring I got jumped on by a Lawless as I was requesting permission to land at a station; so I had to fight, blew him away then went back to the station, landed there with no bounty or anything else to collect; just had to cough up credits for munitions! I am playing the solo mode in case anybody is wondering. "So I have been exploring since the end of June and now I am about 8000LY away on my way back and I would greatly appreciate some help! At this time I feel like Mad Max driving on a highway with no rules!ED is a lot of fun to play but terrible as far as understanding the environment.Again thanks for the help!

To answer your title question first, the answer is here but please note that you may get a better answer by reading the wiki or other player manual found by doing a search under manual or guide.
I believe that lawless refers to his affiliation so there is no bounty on him. Hostile is just another ship that for whatever reason doesn't like you.
You only get paid for identifying a pilot with a bounty i.e. A wanted pilot or if you have accepted a mission to intercept a specific type of pilot. The other way to get paid is to blow the doors off the cargo hatch so that cargo drops out or you damage them sufficiently for them to drop cargo for you but that is more like piracy.

Lawless ships are in Anarchies, there is no law, so no bounty is accrued, by ye or he. If ye join a Power, when an other powers ships are in yer powers space they will show as an enemy, ye may attack them at will, no bounty on ye will be accrued, but little or no bounty on them either. When ye are in an other powers space ye will show as hostile, ye may be attacked at will, but if ye return fire, ye will accrue a bounty. Hostile and enemy actions are still against the law, but the authorities look the other way. Ye will still gain pilot ranks however if they are high enough even if ye don't receive a bounty fer killin them. Wanted are good to go, no matter what, no matter where.

*you

If ye be making a feeble imitation of a pirate accent then yaarr going to have to try a wee bit harder, matey?

Edit: On topic yes, as above. You can ignore powerplay factions entirely if you are not pledged to a power but if you are in a system without police then they there is no authority to submit vouchers to. You can use a kill warrant scanner which checks targets for bounties in other systems. However, if operating in lawful space attacking a locally clean ship that has bounties elsewhere is a crime.

Wanted status is as it always was, there is a bounty on that entity. The new labels, Lawless, Hostile, and Enemy were added to indicate your relative status to the target. Lawless indicates you are looking at a ship in an anarchy system. You can shoot them without penalty, but there is no bounty attached.

Hostile, is associated with minor factions. As your reputation goes up and down with different groups you can become hostile to a minor faction. You can shoot then without penalty, you will only get a bounty if you beat them is a system i which they are also wanted.

Enemy, refers to members of opposing PP powers. Again, just as with hostile targets, no bounties unless they are wanted in that system.

Of course, anything that a KWS turns up will net you a bounty, but you will still be restricted by the laws of the system you are in.

Thank you so much for giving me an clearer understanding of what is going on! So in other words, there is no benefit in fighting anybody except wanted ships or use a KWS to identify who is attacking me!

Early on in the game, when you're not stacked with cash, just go hunt RES sites or trade. It's basically the only thing you can do to make any decent money for your time. Once you get stacked and money is just a means to enjoy yourself, you'll likely look at engagements differently. You either want to flex your muscle or you don't.

Also, I would avoid Powerplay if Cr is your goal. You can make a lot more by doing the aforementioned tasks instead of making yourself a target galaxy wide.

When you see someone comment about how this or that "isn't worth it" you have to gather that "worth it" means they don't earn Cr to their Cr/min liking. In that case, only bounty hunting and trading are worth it.

Duly noted! Thanks.
