What, where on a ship

Please, if this info is available, someone tell me – but if not …

Decided to buy an Asp on the weekend for a bit of trading; might not be the best ship for it but it will fill the requirements I am after. So after hitting the ‘Yes take my credits’ button, I went to the Outfitters to buy all the good bits.

This is where I ran into trouble. No, the majority of modules I was after were stocked, only had to drop from an A to a B twice, and will upgrade those when I find them. The problem I had was trying to work out where the hardpoints and utility mounts were physically located on the ship. I had no real clue where and thought two of the hardpoints were at the top, rear half so bought turrets for those, only to find out all 6 HP are fitted to the nose. Same goes with the utility mounts, wasn’t sure which were located where.

Yes I know that you can see the location on the outfit screen but it is a closeup of the immediate area. What would be nice is if you could either zoom in and out of the ship during outfitting or you had a little model displayed (can even be wire frame) highlighting the module you have currently selected.

Not a big thing, just thought it strange that you had to guess the location lol

yes this would indeed be useful especially on bigger ships. I had to do a dev camera spin on the conda to find all its hardpoint locations <shakes head>

FD could have added some nice touches to the Outfitting screen; like most of the game, polish is in short supply.

Simply swinging the camera around from point to point, quick but not too quick would help you visualise where on the ship the hardpoint actually is.

Some basic module models glowing in whatever colour) , and turning the ship exterior partially transparent would help when selecting internal modules.

Instead we got bare-bones, eye-jarring "snap to HPT-01 camera position", FEATURE COMPLETE. Complete with headache inbound on accidental mouse roll-over, yes.

In the Outfitting screen, when a hardpoint/utility slot is highlighted, the camera will centre on it.

Did you even try to read his whole post?
here is the the part you missed

if you switch back to internal (e.g powerplant, cargoracks) then back to the external (weapons, shield boosters) without highlighting a slot you can see the full sized ship, as usual.
This can help a little.

As to utility, it doesn't matter. stick them where you want. As for weapons, fit the weapons in question and then switch to internal>external again and look closely. That's pretty much all you can do.
In the Asp's case the C2 mounts are spaced fairly close together either side of your cockpit, the rest of the C1 mounts are pretty much arranged in a diamond formation around the cockpit, like so. <[]>

I certainly agree though, if you could see the hardpoint with less of a zoom it would be nice. It's a real PITA to figure out where the hardpoints are on stuff like the Clipper until you take it out for a spin. Same problem with the Type 7-- one on high, one low and two by the cockpit.

Also don't worry about Asp and trading. It makes a fine trader. Great jumprange, decent sized cargo and it's mobile enough to dock easily. Packs a lot of defensive punch as well.

Thanks, for some reason I thought one of the hardpoints on the Asp was on the top of the ship, hence was I was going to fit a turreted weapon. As for the utility slots, I wanted to put a PD on top and bottom lol

Yeah, the Asp might not be the best trader but I have nearly everything A rated, good jump range, decent cargo of 88T and enough fire power to at least slow down some of the pirates whilst I run away as quickly as I can :D

I had the same problem at first with the Asp. If ye can see two guns when ye highlight a hard point, it is one of the two in the center bottom. Good place fer turrets. If ye ca see only one and it's low, it is one of the outer two on the bottom. I put gimbals there. There are also two topside, one either side of the cockpit, also good fer gimbals. I run pulse lasers on the bottom and multis on the top. Hope that helps.

Never buy B rated - you should always try to go D, C, A. B are the heaviest by far and will hurt your jump range. C hurt your power. A gives you the best of C&D.

For trading and exploring, you're right - but there is actually an advantage to B-rated other than lower price and power usage than A... it's the toughest module rating, which is also why it's the heaviest. Some people do actually prefer B-rated powerplants because of that.

Actually an Asp is pretty good for trading. Pretty much stripped out (but with some 3A sheilds) you should be able to get 120T, which is more than a no-shields T6 at 112T. Plus you should get ~25ly jump range.

This is what I used to grind my way to a trade Python. Then once you have something bigger, you can retrofit it to be a missions ship. It is possible to pull off low-level combat, but anything bigger than an Asp may be a tad tricky.

Go out of the station and deploy hardpoints. Switch to debug camera (default keybind "0") and have a look around your ship until you locate what you need. You can even zoom in/out.

This is exactly what I'm doing at the moment. 120 tonnes of cargo, A grade kit in the important stuff, D grade in sensors and life support. Double chaff and double A grade shield boosters to allow me to Sir Robin as best as I can. 4x small and 2x medium frag cannon for giving anyone a bloody horrific surprise if I have no other option. Seems to be working well so far, should have enough for a basic Clipper 'Soon(TM)'.

I think that is a good suggestion.
A more sophisticated screen with ship info would be welcome.
At a certain point in development I would like to see some kind of juicy, eye candy, semi technical rotatable 3d schematic that showed us were everything sits including the internals, hard points and other modules.

Ships are the most important thing in the game so I think that kind of eye candy would not just be great to look at, but also very useful. It would be great if such a schematic was accessible from within the ship's UI too, not just the shipyard screen.

I have searched on and off for pictures with them labelled...
No such luck, may do something for Python/Asp/Conda if I get time, unlikely I'll get time tho :/

I really wish there was a better way to view the ship in the hangar. This is probably one of the biggest reasons why I just want to be able to walk around....

Debug cam would be more useful in a station if you could use it with hard points out.

Always managed to work out where everything is in the end but a zoom out option for each hardpoint would be useful to get a better idea.
