So what other games will you play to scratch your space game itch?

I just had a long detailed read of the ED to see what it has to offer.

ED is going to be fairly focused in certain areas, which I think is good.
It'll allow multiple ship ownership, but no stations ownership and generally you'll be a pilot of small to medium sized ships.
It seems to focus on you flying around exploring, fighting and some trading much like how Freelancer works in concepts, but looks like it'll be a lot better.
This is perfect for me as that's the sort of thing I enjoy most.
Fighting, some trading and exploring.

Now there ARE other things I like to do, but not as part of the same game. so there's other games that fulfill that desire for me as follows:

X3:AP (generally the X3 series)
When I want to build a sprawling empire, own space stations and generally play Excel spreadsheets in space, this is the game for me.
I'm pretending X: Rebirth never happened (I even managed to get a refund, it did what it was intended to do very badly), not that it's anything like the previous X games anyway (and was never meant to be).

Sins of a Solar empire:
When I feel like mass battles spanning over multiple systems and generally strategy wargame type stuff, this is the place to go.

That pretty much covers my space PC game wants.

How about you?

Sins is great. I should check that out.

I was playing Faster Than Light for a while.

I have not found anything that is scratching the itch though, I'm looking forward to Banished which is completely non-space game, but looks amazingly chilled and fun to play. It does have some simulation qualities that are similar to E: D though.

I was playing x3:ap until last night... But I just can't seem to get interested in it.

I was playing starbound for a little while. Might have to go back to that?

Working through my Steam library of games I haven't finished...

Playing a bit of War Thunder, now that I've grabbed a joystick for Elite, I've found out how much I've missed flight games.

Lots of board games with my wife and 3 year old daughter. Ironically, thanks to a Steam sale for Small World 2, which my daughter enjoys sitting on my lap to tell me which races to pick, it is now her most requested board game to play at night before bed (when there's time). It has even beat out the sheep game (Agricola - All Creatures Great and Small)...

Have several Indie games to play thanks to Humble Bundle, whose evil methods of supporting charity has also added to my Steam library.

But overall, my focus is to try and get ahead on my fishing video series to promote our area on Youtube (www.youtube.com/fishtemagami) BEFORE I get into Elite... Because I know what I'll want to do once I have it.

X3 is a real slow burner game. Meaning to start it's confusing and the manuals are next to useless.

You really need to goto the forums and read the many guides written by fans of the game to enjoy it and install a bunch of mods as well.
You'll like it if you enjoy setting up trade routes for automated ships, setting up space stations and generally the nitty gritty of space sims.
I didn't get it for space combat, which TBH it doesn't even do that well.
But when you see your ships flying about plying their trade and watching your first space station being built, it's pretty awesome.
I can totally understand why people would get put off by the game tho, you have to invest a fair amount of time and energy to get into it and enjoy it, but once you're there it's great (for what it is).

I play X3:TC and Skyrim and FC3 BD.

When ED comes out I shall play whilst eagerly awaiting SC, and continue to play whichever is best for me. I don't generally have two games of the same genre on the go at the same time. I guess this pair could be so good they are the exception to the rule, but it's never happened yet for me

Another game I tried recently (Like yesterday) was Starmade.
http://star-made.org/

It's sort of like Minecraft in space.

It's in alpha atm, but it's free, so you have nothing to lose really.
You get to build your own ships and fly about exploring, mining, fighting pirates etc.

I play it with my kids who love it (I love it too :D ).

Depends when ED comes out really and how close SC is to the release of ED.
If they are pretty close, I'll play ED and not bother with SC until I've have a good long playthrough of ED.
I expect no matter what I'll be getting SC anyway, but to me ED is my preference based on what I know about both games.
I doubt very much I'll be able to resist SC for long though, which should be fine as it looks like ED will be out way before SC.

I'll definitely play both but they're not going to come out anywhere near each other.

At this point its fair to say it looks like Elite (Gamma) will come out in May/June 2014 and Star Citizen will come out May/June 2015.

Squadron42 (SC single player military campaign) may come out late this year and I'll take a week off Elite to play and finish that.

I also think that just due to the fact its a massive 'hand coded' universe in Star Citizen means it will be fairly buggy at launch (like ALL MMOs are....) so I'll most likely wait 2-3 months post launch to start it up.

You said it the wrong way - It's Freelancer that works similar to ELITE in concept :p ELITE (original) came first, then Freelancer.

Elite Dangerous is an updated version of the original Elite, made by the same developer. So you know it's gonna be amazing!

Anyway on topic - I'm still playing Evochron Mercenary. currently the closest thing to Elite until Elite Dangerous is available :)

Or, if I want a bit of nostalgia, I'll go play Oolite.

A year between both games? Well I can safely say I'll be getting both then.

Ah, that's a very good point, I'll defo be waiting for a while before getting SC then.
I still feel burned from X: Rebirth, although I got a refund a few days ago from Steam, so I'm mostly mollified now.

Yeah I know, I played the original elite on the C64 many years ago.
I wasn't really talking in timelines or who came first.
but still, Freelancer was a game that could have been awesome and it was very good, but flawed in many ways too.
I'm hoping ED will play like Freelancer SHOULD have been.

I have that, I found it difficult to get into. The navigation is horrible.

Yeah, I feel like ED will be more my thing, but have been disappointed by so many games I realise I can count on nothing! So I backed them both...

I went the other way and backed neither.
I'll buy the full versions when they are released. I don't particularly want or need early access to a game.
I'm somewhat suspicious of SC, I wonder if they can pull off what they're promising, so I'll be waiting for a bit before buying that after release.

I'm not bothered about early access, but there were a couple of other titbits that tempted me to back.

SC vision is grand, but they do have a lot of money. I just hope one of these games is half decent, or I'll be deep into TESO!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I wish there was another space game, but nothing for me... the closest (new) one would be X:Rebirth and the less said about that the better.

Nah, I'm happy with the Elite Alphas for now. :)

Different games for different moods. E:D is a must-have just because it is Elite, and will have a huge universe to explore, but I'm not expecting it to have everything I want - in some ways it could prove to be a bit too focussed, but we'll have to wait and see.

Star Citizen definitely, I have two small ships (an explorer and a trader) and plan to stay with just those to begin with. It looks like being a terrific game and I'm looking forward to it for its more hand-crafted MMOish nature of being a massive online game in a smaller arena where I'll necessarily meet more players.

Limit Theory continues to impress with every dev video - I admire the elegance and simplicity of its 100% procedural design - and I'll certainly play it even if it's only to give Josh some money (I missed the kickstarter, unfortunately). It could turn into the game the X series almost but not quite was.

The sim/game for which I have the greatest excitement at the moment is Space Engine. This is truly beautiful to play with just as an exploration toy, but if and when Vlad gets the funding to make it into an MMO it will be a cross between EVE, Novus Aeterno and the X series. E:D and SC will satisfy the solo pilot out in space urge, and Space Engine will feed the megalomaniacal dictator within :D

Independence War 2 for me. It's good for studying a HOTAS layout for Elite! Specially thanks to a thread here that spells out every command available for now in Elite: D.

Space Engine is amazing too.

Well I never stopped playing C64 Elite, Oolite, FE2 or Pioneer so besides those I started back on Wing Commander 1 several months ago, I also went back and started X-Beyond The Frontier.

Also playing Evochron Mercenary and Rodina at the moment.

That's quite a bit really isn't it. ;)
