Fed Dropship Mk 2, really FD???

If there's any truth to last night's revelations that 1.4 will have four new ships, one of which is the Fed Dropship Mk 2.
Don't see any sense to having an upgraded model for one of the most unpopular ships in the game that has only been introduced a year or so ago. Surely the Cobra Mk 4 is way more deserving, the Mk 3 is an awesome ship but it is the original iconic ship from 1984 that is, sorry to say, sadly in need of an upgraded model, hardpoints, power plant and utility points mainly, slightly different look but keeping the original shape mainly.
Can't help feeling huge disappointment over this but maybe in future plans yet, I suppose FD can't please us all :)

To each their own...but I think (and based on what DB said at one of the recent conferences) the variants mean that we are getting well more than the promised 30 ships. We've all clamored for variety, and this is likely the low hanging fruit in getting more variety.

Different variants of ships is a bit lame from FD considering the huge amount of ship choices from previous games.
I was really thinking we would have 30 ships of unique design but alas we are getting short changed on this one (Imperial Eagle anyone).
That would be quite disappointing. Variants are not entirely new ships. I hope they don't count individually because FD wants to cut corners.

Have you ever thought about why it is so unpopular?

Personally I always liked the design of the dropship und would gladly fly one, if it wasn't so underpowered. Escpecially the incredibly weak shields held me back from buying one.

I'm looking forward to the Mk2 variant and if it has what the old dropship was lacking, I will probably get one.

And that sums it up... I am really looking forward to the new Dropship. Out of all ships in the game the Dropship really needed an upgrade and some purpose.

As far as the Cobra - the ship is by no means perfect, but the ship is pure joy to own in it's current form. I own every ship in game except the FDL, I still find myself going back to the Cobra. In my opinion It is way down in the list of ships that desperately need a new variant. That's not to say a Cobra MK4 wouldn't put a huge grin on my face!

meh, the imperial Eagle was in the previous games though (or was it the Eagle MK III but only available in Imperial ports?)

It even had the two bars on the wings

Variant's are great, them counting as anything more than half a ship in the 30 count would be lame though. I'd like to see more of the small ship's get variant's, but only if they count little or not at all toward's the final count. Also the Dropship we have now is a bad***, but most people look at the on paper stat's and never bother learning to use it properly.

Pretty sure they said three ships, not four unless I've missed a more recent post.
So that'll be the imp eagle, The Dropship MkII (Oh, woo-freakin-pi) and the Fed Gunship.
Kinda sad we don't have the corvette yet, but also kinda glad they didn't rush it-- if these two new ships fill the mid-range combat vacancies that means the Corvette is probably still in line for the large combat vacancy.

Gunship could go either way. It could be an absolutely awesome alternative to the FDL and Python-- probably in the cheaper 15-25mil pricerange that's between the Vulture and Asp on towards the Python and FDL.
Frankly as to cost I'd think it would be a little cheaper than that, since multirole vessels seem to traditionally cost much more than combat ones, so maybe even 10-15mil? Don't think I'd mind that 10mil extra if it got a high class FSD and a decent sized fuel tank to be honest. Actually no, I'd pay double that for a 20Ly range.

Or, the gunship could be the rumoured "turret ship" and end up as an obnoxious, incompentent kind of Asp.
Hope it lives up to the hype in my heart. Well, we'll need to see first.

Honestly I'm even a little hyped for the MkII FDS. If we get a wider version, with more guns, mobility and shields I might pick one up if the price isn't too exorbitant.
Well, that's if my Fed Navy Promotion isn't being eaten by those useless pencilpushers down in Sol.

If the changes to targeting the PP go through, the dropship & varients could become a beast of a tank. Yeah sure #WantAllShips nao NAOOO I TELL THEEE !

Indeed we should have all three.
Eagle Mk.I by Falcoun De Lacey - lozenge shaped wing tips
Eagle Mk.II a Federal Redesign - without the lozenges
Eagle Mk.III an Imperial Redesign. with tubes or bars in place of the lozenges

*Edit*
Thought personally I would have outfitted them with the same Hard points and just had them as Hull Cosmetic differences and a few points to say speed for one, shiedls for one, and manoeuvre for the last as a sublte point of difference.

What's the source of the revelation about four new ships?

I can imagine they are having to put some serious thought into ship internal environments and if FPS or whatever is going to be a serious move for them. If they aren't going in that direction then they can probably afford to kick out new designs & assets.

If walking around is a real possibility then they have to factor that in with every ship they introduce. Variants mean they can offer something different without having to extend the interior design with each ship (by all accounts the interiors might be stupidly large) which could put them in a situation where they simply can't deliver.

I agree. I think variant's are awesome, but I'm hoping they don't count towards the 30 ship total. However, if most ships had a variant and we do have 30 different ship hulls, then the total amount of available ships would be well above 30 which would be really awesome.

I have a strong feeling though that the variant's do count towards the 30 though.

Somewhat off topic, but does anyone remember that Beta backers get one of the 5 "new" ships (i.e. the 5 above the original 25) for free? I could've sworn I read that somewhere but I can't find it.

I also don't get why to have an Mk2 rather than a usable Mk1 but hey, let's see.
Hopefully one day FD will announce Elite: Dangerous Mk2 too.

Must be wonderful to come in to work each day, knowing that whatever you do, there will be a thread telling you so are so wrong to do it, or not do it and how you have personally disappointed someone or ruined their life or whatever.

Would be very surprised if the devs gave it more than 2 seconds of thought. Everyone knows what the internet is like.
